"Group Therapy" production draws crowd to Boleros

Artistic director, choreographer and writer, Kavin Grant, recently returned to his home in Jacksonville from Temple University after completing his second year of Graduate Studies in Dance. He brought to Florida his tantalizing stage show, “Group Therapy” which portrays an inspiring plot in a two act, nineteen scene production. Seven couples find forgiveness and love, through God, by learning how to understand each other.

Boleros Dance Complex is a befitting establishment that hosted two nights of the play “Group Therapy”. The stage, lighting, props, music, background vocals, choreography and script were marvelous. This is a show that could go straight to Broadway and tour from coast to coast and abroad.

Many lessons were shown about the things that people endure on this earth while in a marital union. Secrets in a relationship can tear a marriage apart, yet honesty has to prevail. The couples in the performance had different issue in their households just as someone we might encounter – deceit, hurt, confusion, misunderstanding, blame, lack of trust and just DRAMA.

Don’t think that the play was serious throughout the evening; there were many
moments of humor that had the whole audience roaring in their seats. Since Kavin Grant is also an expert in dance, there were segments of interpretive dance that told different stories; some of hurt and pain that can come from unforgiveness and other dance moves that displayed passion, hope, grace and victory.

You are a busy person (just as we all try not to be), and your email is clogged with SPAM. Here is an example of “Email Intrusion” from Jacksonville Florida to everyone and to everywhere.

Why am I getting these emails? Could you please remove my email address from this list? I am receiving all the correspondences going back and forth, and I don't know why. I have no involvement in Ms. V's submission and I will not open attachments sent to my email box from “Mr. Want to send to everyone”, or any other person I do not know.

This person didn’t need to receive this email nor did they desire to see your attachments. When sending off emails to people whom you know personally, kindly add their names to “BCC” (Blind Courtesy/Carbon Copy) so that others won’t have access to other peoples email addresses. I had to send an apology note to all the people that I had mistakenly sent the original email to. Yes, I forgot to “BCC”. Please don’t let this be you. Know the people who you email. And to those who have done this, just remind them nicely “to stop”. When you “BCC”, it makes your email more personable even if you’ve sent it to many, many others.

Christian Woman!

It's a little late, but here is another excerpt from "Where Did That Come From? - Revised" Continue to enjoy the summer seasons and don't forget to catch more on Examiner.com

Christian Woman! - “Look! Up in the Sky; It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! No, It’s Christian Woman!”

Have you ever met someone who was so friendly at church, and, when you meet them in the streets, or around another setting other than church, they are totally different? Being associated with the military, I have come in contact with some Christians who

have a Chameleon-like attitude. They change according to whichever setting they’re in: very loving to you around other saints and very distant when around you and other people in the world.

We should be the same in our spirit man at all times and in every setting in which we are physically involved. We should portray an image of Christ and show His love to people we meet. So too, as the Word of God is the same yesterday, today, and forever; we should be also.

1st Global Day of Prayer in the US

This is the first time that any city in the United States has hosted the Global Day of Prayer. It is the largest event since Jacksonville, Florida hosted the Super Bowl in 2005. This event will be larger than the Billy Graham Crusade that was held in Jacksonville back in 2000. This is a historic prayer event you don’t want to miss! Join thousands here at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena for the First Coast Global Day of Prayer, Saturday, June 11, 2011 6pm.

Here are the three links that I hope that you will help to spread the word about this tremendous day in the history of our time.

Influences: winning or losing?

Influences: winning or losing?

Are there still good ‘role-models’ left in the world for our children to emulate? Are people in Hollywood and in the industries just getting a ‘slap-on-the-wrist’ and then allowed to go free with what would be considered a “joke of a punishment or sentence?” Recently, one of the most influential men in the music industry (Mr. Angello Ellerbee) let it be known that things have got to change in our society and it’s up to “we the people” to take a stand and make those changes.

“Charlie Sheen Gets Two Standing Ovations at New York City Tour, Charlie Sheen wants Mila Kunis to become his third ‘goddess’ and live with him at his two girlfriends at his Los Angeles home.” What is a Ménage à trios? Is it something that you or your child should desire seeing or hearing in the news? Are the rumors true or false that Sheen will return to the CBS sitcom according to NY Magazine, ‘Vulture’: CBS and Warner Bros.? TV execs declined to comment, even off the record, about the notion that Moonves has offered Sheen his job back. In any case, Moonves was intimately involved with the decision to fire Sheen from Two and a Half Men; it makes no sense that he would suddenly decide that Sheen should return without any new development (a trip to a real rehab center or an apology from Sheen, for example.) Is Sheen a “good example” for anyone?

There are many others who our children may be listening to or watching on TV (Lindsay Lohan, Kayne West, Chris Brown and Lady Gaga just to name a few) – if we allow them to. As Kathie Lee Gifford once said on her show, “How do you get rewarded for bad behavior?”

In a recent ad by J. Crew a mother is holding her son’s foot after applying a coat of pink nail polish to his toes. Jenna Lyons holds son Beckett's pedicured foot in her hand as text below the image reads, "Lucky for me I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink. Toenail painting is way more fun in neon." What are we trying to tell our young influential males? “It’s alright to cross-dress” or “It’s ok to be a male with female tendencies? Or is this just another way of using the term Metro sexual?

Others have tried to make a difference in the lives of our young people such as Bill Cosby, Sec. of State Hilary Clinton, Michelle Obama and some dedicated teachers; but what about PARENTS – isn’t it our responsibility to get busy with our children?

Who or what is a “Tom Boy” and should parents condone the girls’ behavior? Where do we draw the line before homosexual behavior is adapted? What about the parents of a little boy who allows him to dress in girls cloths (“My Princess Boy”) because they don’t see anything wrong with it or they don’t want to stifle the child’s creativity? Do we do anything at all or just let boys be boys and girls be girls? How have we gotten to be such a lackadaisical society?

So, with all said, seen and done – what do we do? Are we just going to turn our heads (SMH), or should we get involved at all? What say you? Thanks to Reflections Music Group and Brothatone for their contribution to the music video in this piece.

Influences: winning or losing? Let's hear what you've got to say. Thank you so much for sending your condolences on the passing of my Mother-in-Law on Easter Sunday when she went to "Dance With Jesus".

Friends and Compliments

Greetings readers, Heyyyy,

First of all please continue to pray for the families of those persons who are still lost in Japan, Christchurch and in other disaster areas. Be a Blessing to others whenever you can.

Let’s talk about FRIENDS.
We say, “So-and-so” is a friend of mine”, but are they? What is true Friendship?
• A Friend is someone who will drop to their knees and pray when you’re going through something and you need a touch from God, and you can’t pray.
• A Friend will call you every once and awhile, not for anything, but to just say, “Hi”.
• A Friend doesn’t put you down, but will be there to help you reach your “next level”.
• A Friend will weep when you weep, laugh with you when you laugh, cheer your victories and won’t allow you to be defeated.
• A true Friend will tell you about yourself – when needed – in love; and will be there when you come to the reality of yourself.
• A Friend is forever.

Sure we need earthly, physical friends; but when the chips are down, there’s only one true friend that you can count on and you’ve got to get to know Him in order to depend upon Him. Proverbs 18:24 (King James Version) 24 “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Jesus will be there for you when people won’t.

Accept a Compliment and don’t bring flaws to the surface.
• “Your skin is so pretty.” “Thanks but I can’t get rid of this zit.”
• “Your outfit fits like a glove.” “Thanks but I need to lose 20 pounds.”
• “I like your home.” “Oh, it’s so small, but I guess it’s OK.”
The person giving you a compliment didn’t notice your extra poundage or the imperfections that you seem to magnify. Accept a little praise and leave your but out of your conversations.

Thank all of you who are in the following regions, for being the top 5 viewer areas to my website:
• Redmond, Washington
• Mountain View, California

Get Through the Tough Stuff

Ms “V” has taken a “spiritual bat”, knocked the devils head off and made a home-run for Jesus. Recently, my body was under an attack (rectal bleeding). Had to be hospitalized, have a Colonoscopy, and get blood transfusions; nevertheless, I had no PAIN during the entire ordeal. (OBTW – a couple of days before all this I went to my Doctor’s to discover that I had Shingles.) One week later, I am home, bleeding stopped and now I know how to live so it doesn’t happen again.

If you’ve been “going through” - God has a purpose for you – don’t give up. Don’t give in to circumstances. Below you will find some scriptures that I confessed over my body (in my own words but scriptural references):

“Tell only a few (those who know how to pray) about your malady. You may not even need to ask them to PUSH (Pray Until Something Happens) so you can be well. The prayers of Godly people count for a lot.” James 5:16

“We TBR (Trust – Believe – Receive). We don’t go by what it looks like.” II Cor. 5:7

“Because of God, I do not fear. I have power, keep me some love and I have all my senses intact.” II Tim. 1:7

“God’s not a punk. He said it (whatever IT may be) and He’ll make it happen. He doesn’t lie.” Num. 23:19

Sunday best vs. casual dress

Do not get this story “twisted”, it is meant to point out the extremes of Casual and Sunday Best dressing (this website may be a little ‘over-the-top’ for some). There’s a problem when we come to the Lord in anything other than our “Sunday Best”.

Once upon a time, people use to put on their “good clothes” before attending church. Preparations usually began on Saturday or before bedtime that night. People would lay out their clothes, get their hair styled or cut and then go to bed early because you didn’t want to get caught ‘nodding’ in church. That was called getting out your “Sunday Best” and getting ready for church.

Today it’s called: “Casual Sunday” and some churches have it more than once a year. It is a designated Sunday (or Saturday) when people can ‘dress down’ or maybe even don some sort of “theme apparel”. It’s a day of worship that people can come as they are, yet some bounce into church looking as if they just rolled out of bed and their clothes have never seen an iron. Men have gone from an open collar shirt & jacket to athletic wear. Some women come dressed as if they just stepped off a treadmill.

Why come into the house of the Lord wearing just any old thing? Do you suppose the Magi, who came to visit Jesus after He was born, wore wrinkled, oversized, tattered clothing? Sure the shepherds wore working garb, but that’s all they had and it was their best.

If your very best presentation before the Lord is jeans and a tee shirt, then by all means, come to the table and sup; but if you can do better – wear your best. Men and women who own cattle ranches & farms in the southwest know how to make a pair of jeans and a cowboy hat look real choice on a Sunday morning.

Remember “Little House on the Prairie” and other shows from the past where the children (and parents) had their “Sunday-go-to-meeting” clothes that they took care of and wore just on Sundays or special occasions?

It’s bad (and that doesn’t mean good) when you see more glitz and glam or ‘so-called fashion dressing’ at a high school basketball game (5 inch stilettos, false eyelashes and more weave than you could imagine) than you would see coming into the house of God. Recall how people dressed to go to a club, well that’s what you may see. {Please put your rocks down} There’s nothing wrong with a little enhancement, but when your attire at a high school ball game looks more like a ‘wanna-be red carpet event’ – something’s amiss. Is this only happening in Jacksonville, Florida?

It’s a little extreme, but the money that went into those outfits could be spent on a couple of mix-and-match (conservative, everyday) outfits. You like “name brand” merchandise? Designer fashions can be found at ‘thrift shops’, ‘resale stores’, ‘outlet malls’ and ‘vintage shops’. Also, going to a department store when merchandise is 50 – 75% off (and if you wait you can sometimes catch an addition 25% off of the sale price) is a good economical thing. Bargains can be found in these stores. Budget your money for something that won’t fall apart in the first wash.

What ever happen to the phrase, “Dress for Success”? Do we not want to be successful when coming to church? What are we showing others if we don’t give them something to strive for?

Even in the business world, Swiss bank “UBS” has revamped its dress code handbook on the importance of impressing customers with a polished presence and sense of Swiss precision and decorum. Is there anything wrong with wanting to impress God with the way we come before His presence?

Days of “white gloves” are long gone and “hats” have almost been eradicated. There use to be a time when women would always wear something on their heads until we discovered that our hair was a covering. So hats went bye-bye. Coming to church doesn’t have to imitate a fashion show, nevertheless; put on your ‘Sunday Best’.

There is even a television show named “Sunday Best”. Would you want to watch something entitled “Sunday Worst”? Neither would the King of Kings. He deserves our utmost Best. Why use attire to be a deciding factor for coming to church anyway? Yes, it’s true that man looks at the outward appearance; notwithstanding, God sees a man’s heart (I Sam. 16:7). But would you want to be like the person who is “barely making it” or would you like to be that prominent individual the others want to follow (as you follow Christ)?

Have you noticed how TV anchor people, sports casters and some entertainers dress on the air? They’re dressed in shirt, ties, and suits. Would you want to hear what they have to say if they were wearing ‘casual attire’? Would you take them seriously? Maybe – but why risk the chance? Other areas besides Jacksonville, Florida may be seeing these changes too. Is your area one of them?

A long time ago, men would go to church to find a well-dressed young woman to meet and consider dating and bringing home to Mama. Would a pair of Nike’s turn them on today? Oh, maybe the places have been reversed from the church to the gymnasium.

This writer is privileged to attend some exclusive cultural spots in Jacksonville and people come “dressed to the hilt”; so why short change God just for comforts sake? If you desire to dress down – then at least go Business Casual.

Let it be understood that we never pass judgment on someone when they don’t have something nice to wear – that’s the time to be charitable and be tactful in giving a person something. It should be something that you would want to wear. How you present the gift to the person is another thing. Get to know them first and don’t think of them as a person ‘needing a handout’. (It’s not good to be prideful, but everyone should have a little pride - VJP)

So let’s give God our “Sunday Best” and reflect the light. He is a God that will supply for all of His children, but the children have to desire those good and perfect gifts that are given freely to us. You’ve got to show what God is doing for you in order for others to desire those blessings. Don’t just hoard blessings – give some away. What do you have to say???

Happy What? 2011

Today is January 5, 2011. It is only five days since we welcomed in the New Year. Have you wished anyone a “Happy New Year” since January 1st? On January first (and maybe on the second) we bid each other a prosperous look towards the future. Well, why not continue to bestow greetings of great expectations until maybe “Happy Valentine’s Day” rolls around?

Try it! Continue to say, “Happy New Year” to the grocery clerk, to your doctor, to your hairdresser & manicurist and yes, even to someone you don’t know who passes by you in the street or at your local department store. You will be amused & amazed to see the smiles and maybe even a few puzzled looks of confusion. What harm will it do? It may be the only positive affirmation that the person will receive all week. “We can say Happy New Year this late in January - It’s gonna be alright”.

Even though the world continues to come out of a “recession”, we as Christian believers still, have no connection with it. Continue to pray for those who do not know Christ. Continue to "Thank God" for all that He does for us and others - only if we allow Him to.

And if one of your “New Year’s Resolutions” is to read the entire Bible in a year, consider going to this site from Vivian Herron (Bible Study Examiner) and subscribe for daily email notifications. Here you will also have a chance to participate in discussions on the Daily Bible Readings.

What are your expectations for this New Year of 2011?
