“Derek Hough: Live! The Tour”
is coming to the historic, nonprofit Florida Theatre on April 7, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.  The show features brand-new stage production, astounding versatility and, as always, Derek’s magnetic stage presence.  Fans will journey through a true fusion of dance and music, as Derek explores styles ranging from ballroom and tap to salsa and hop-hop and everything in between.  Creative team and two-time EMMY® winners, Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo, also known as NappyTabs (Jennifer Lopez’s ‘All I Have’ Residency; Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour; GRAMMYs® creative direction), will co-create, direct and supervise choreography for the tour.

About Derek Hough: Emmy Award winning and New York Times Best-Selling author Derek Hough, the only six-time champion in franchise history of the hit ABC show “Dancing with the Stars”, started dancing in his hometown of Salt Lake City, UT, at age 11.  Just one year later, he moved to London to live and train with the top dance coaches in the world and attend the prestigious Italia Conti performing arts school where he studied theatre, music and dance.

A multi-talented entertainer, two-time Emmy Award winner and none-time nominee for Best Choreography, Hough has also appeared in film, television and stage projects as an actor.  He made his feature film debut for director Duane Adler and producer Robert Cort in the feature film Make Your Move and has a recurring role on the ABC series Nashville.  His stage performances include Radio City Music Hall’s Spring Spectacular costarring alongside the Tony Award winning Laura Benanti and the critically acclaimed production of Footloose which he starred as the male lead in London's West End.  In December of 2016, Hough starred with Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Martin Short and Harvey Fierstein in NBC’s Hairspray Live!.

In May of 2017, Hough joined Jennifer Lopez and Ne-Yo at the judges table for the NBC series World of Dance.  World of Dance, which launched as the highest- rated summer show in over ten years, is an unparalleled dance competition that featured solo artists competing against duos and crews in all genres of dance, including: hip hop, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom, and more competing for a million-dollar prize.  Hough can also add best-selling author to his list of credits.  His memoir Taking the Lead; Lessons from a Life in Motion hit stands in August of 2014 and rapidly was named to the prestigious New York Times Best-Seller list during two non-consecutive time periods.

In 2014 Hough and his sister, Julianne, teamed for a live stage dance concert MOVE Live on Tour performing in 50 cities around the country, in 2015 they toured again selling out scores of venues on their 47city outing.  In 2017 they again performed a sold-out tour of 48 cities around the United States with their show Move – Beyond – Live on Tour.

With celebrity partners on Dancing with the Stars that have included: Brooke Burke, Jennie Garth, Ricki Lake, Maria Menounos Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Grey, Kellie Pickler, Amber Riley, Amy Purdy and Bindi Irwin, Hough is best known for his innovation and daring choreography on the show.  Hough is the winningest professional dancer with six Mirror Ball Trophies.  His work has brought him Emmy nominations and inquiries from the film and music world regarding his dance knowledge and ability.

‘BIG’ the Musical will be featured at the Alhambra in JAX

“Be careful what you wish for” may very well be the message of The Alhambra's next show, “Big...the Musical,” opening March 27 at the iconic Jacksonville theater.  The show is based on the 1988 film that starred Tom Hanks as Josh Baskin, a 12-year-old boy who's wish to ‘ZOLTAR’ came true, waking up the next day as an adult.  Josh quickly realized that being an adult is not all it's cracked up to be.

For some attendees, the show may be that cautionary tale about being careful of what you wish for.  For others, it's a sentimental story about innocence lost.  For others it's an unsolved crime story.  And still for others it is all about Zoltar and the magic bestowed by this mystical arcade attraction.  “For me, I see all of that.  In its own innocent way, the show illustrates almost the same themes as our current production, Mid-Life The Crisis Musical, except in a child's view of the adult world.  BIG paints a caricature of adulthood that adults know too well - politics of business life, complexities of relationships, climbing the corporate ladder.  As with a lot of theatrical productions, there is a lesson here.  Maybe it is exactly the right lesson for today's world,” said Alhambra owner Craig Smith.

Craig continued,
“For better or for worse, adulthood catches up with all of us.  In today's hyper-competitive world where you're supposed to know your college major at 14 and be a CEO at 22, maybe BIG just helps us look at things in the perspective that says, ‘why rush it?’  Being a kid is fun.  It's supposed to be.  Let's remind our kids not to get too BIG too fast.”

The pre-Broadway tryout of BIG started in Detroit in January 1996.  The musical opened on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre on April 28, 1996, and was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Actress, Supporting Actor, Book, Score, and Choreography.  The show had a US National tour, directed by Eric D. Schaeffer starring Jim Newman and Jacquelyn Piro Donovan, which began in September 1997 in Wilmington, DE.  The show made its UK and Ireland premiere prior to the West End at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in November 2016.

The menu also plays a BIG role in the show with, Executive Chef DeJuan Roy creating a wishful menu for this magical new show features:
*First Course (choice of one) Potato & Bacon Chowder or Spring Salad with spring greens, corn, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, green onions, Thousand Island dressing.
*Second Course (choice of one): Brown Sugar-Crusted Corned Beef with parsley and garlic boiled potatoes, braised cabbage, mustard sauce, or Aunt Mae's Fried Chicken with buttermilk mash potatoes, chicken gravy, creamed peas, or Oven-Seared Red Fish with salsa verde, roasted cauliflower mash, Swiss chard, or a Quinoa Bowl with roasted patty pan squash, golden sun-dried tomatoes, caramelized shallots, red quinoa, Swiss chard.
*The Dessert Course features a choice of Caramel Apple Strudel or Banana Cream Pie.
You don’t want to miss this show suitable for all ages.

‘Wil Haygood’ at the Cummer Museum for one evening

The Cummer Museum is pleased to host an evening with best-selling author, prize-winning journalist, acclaimed biographer, and cultural historian Wil Haygood.  Best known as the author of the New York Times bestsellers “The Butler” and “Showdown,” Haygood tells the story of America through the lens of history, politics, sports, race, and the lives of change-making African-Americans.

Haygood will present an in-depth analysis of the impact of the Harlem Renaissance through the work of his new book "I Too Sing America,” which will be available for purchase in the Cummer Shop, along with a selection of his other books and merchandise related to Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman.

One hundred years after the Harlem Renaissance emerged as a creative force at the close of World War I, “I Too Sing America” offers a major survey on the visual art and material culture of the groundbreaking movement.  The book illuminates multiple facets of the era – the lives of its people, the art, the literature, the music, and the social history – through paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, and contemporary documents and ephemera.  The illustrated chronicle includes work by artists: Romare Bearden, Allan Rohan Crite, Palmer Hayden, William Johnson, Jacob Lawrence, Archibald Motley, and James Van Der Zee.

The book is the culmination of decades of reflection, research, and scholarship. In thematic chapters, Haygood captures the range and breadth of the Harlem Renaissance, a sweeping movement which saw an astonishing array of black writers, artists and musicians gather over a period of a few intense years, expanding far beyond its roots in Harlem to unleashing a myriad of talents upon the nation.
