Cummer Museum launches ‘Family 2 Family’ membership match promo

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens today announced the launch of the Family 2 Family Membership Match promotion.  For every $100 donated to the Museum as part of a membership purchase or upgrade through September 30, the Museum will give a Museum membership to the family of a current fourth-grade Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) student.

The promotion builds upon the Museum’s long-standing partnership with DCPS.  During the 2018-2019 school year, thousands of DCPS students visited the Museum or participated in art education experiences through outreach programs, including more than 800 fourth-grade students who were provided a free tour of the Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman exhibition.

The Museum’s goal for the Family 2 Family promotion is to secure 5,500 memberships to provide all current fourth-grade students with a free Family-level membership.  Adam Levine, the Cummer Museum’s George W. and Kathleen I.  Gibbs Director & Chief Executive Officer, sees the promotion as a way to ensure these students can come back to the Museum with their families without restriction, whether to experience a special exhibition or enjoy playing in the reconstructed gardens.

“Visiting art museums at a young age is an important and valuable educational experience, but the impact of art museums on learning and development increases substantially when people come back,” said Levine.
“When you remove barriers to entry, people visit museums.  Family 2 Family is about this community coming together to provide access to the highest quality arts, gardens and programming.  I can think of no fuller embodiment of Ninah Cummer’s vision to create ‘a center of beauty and culture for all of Jacksonville.’”

The Museum will work with DCPS to distribute vouchers for free Museum memberships to students and their families during the 2019-2020 school year.  “We are so thankful to community partners like the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens that play such a vital role in enriching the educational and cultural experiences of our students,” said Dr. Diana Greene, superintendent of Duval County Public Schools.
“Through the Cummer’s Family 2 Family promotion, learning in art, history, and social studies will be brought to life for our students and their families as they enjoy even greater access to the museum.”

Family-level memberships cost $100 and include free admission for a year for two adults and children or grandchildren under the age of 18.  Additional benefits include exclusive exhibition openings; special invitations to programs and events; a quarterly digital newsletter; discount admission for concerts, lectures, garden programs, art camps and classes; a 10% discount at the Cummer Shop and Cummer CafĂ©; free admission to more than 150 Southeast Reciprocal Museums; reciprocal membership to over 1,000 institutions through the North American Reciprocal Museums (NARM) program; and reciprocal membership to nearly 300 gardens through the American Horticultural Society Reciprocal Program.

‘Ain’t Misbehain’ has singing, dancing and swinging

If you want to hear some good ole Honkey Tonk, Speak Easy, Cabaret, Swing music; then you better get over to the Alhambra Theatre & Dining to experience toe-tapping sounds of an era gone by.  This wonderful show will remind you of the Roaring 20’s, Jive Talkin' and other LIVE music that is better than any Big Band yesterday or today.

Ain't Misbehavin’, is now playing at the Alhambra and is a tribute to the black musicians of the 1920s and 1930s who were part of the Harlem Renaissance, an era of growing creativity, cultural awareness, and ethnic pride, and takes its title from the 1929
Thomas "Fats" Waller song, "Ain't Misbehavin'".

Dynamic scenery, costumes and dancing compliment the magnificent voices that pump out song-after-song with no resting until the intermission before the second act.  The Live Band comprised of: Anthony Felton (Conductor/Piano man), Sean Tills (Bass), Greg Hersey (Drums); Carson Smisek (Trumpet); Alex Hernandez (Reeds) and Diego A. Herrada (Trombone), continually accompanied the five actors/singers/dancers/stage perfectionists.

The Five Actors, who played separate personalities, entertained effortlessly during the entire performance.  Tarra Conner Jones* (Nell/Tarra), Cherry Hamlin* (Amelia/Cherry), Amitria Fanae* (Charlene/Amitria), Christopher G. Patterson* (Andre/Christopher) and E. Mani Cadet* (Ken/Mani).  * Denotes Actors’ Equity Association.

The meal that Chef DeJuan Roy and his staff prepared, is scrumdiddlyumptious.  The Spinach Salad, and Atlas Mountain Soup is very tasty.  This writer had the pleasure of enjoying the Fried Flounder while our tablemates said that the Pork Ribeye Steak is very, very tender.  Our dessert choice was the Sweet Potato Cheesecake.  All was yummy and, as always, the portions are quite adequate.

Don’t be Misbehavin’ and miss out on this seat-dancing, finger-poppin’ show.

“One Night in Memphis,” the official and number one tribute to Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash will be appearing LIVE at the Thrasher-Horne Center.

“One Night in Memphis” features over 90 minutes of pure rockabilly, country, gospel and rock and roll in a very authentic and energetic presentation featuring nationally known talent.  The show recreates that magical night of December 4th, 1956 when Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash found themselves jamming at Sam Phillip’s Sun Studios in Memphis, TN.  Little did they know that their jam session was being recorded and preserved for all time, representing all the performers in their prime and the very best music of that time.

“One Night in Memphis” is created and directed by John Mueller from the highly acclaimed show “Winter Dance Party” and has met with the same accolades and audience standing ovations.  The San Francisco Examiner raves, “An Amazing Show!”

‘Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical’ in JAX soon

“Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical” is making its Jacksonville premier, coming to the Times-Union Center’s Terry Theater for only 4 performances.  Featuring your favorite throwback hits by artists like Boyz II Men, Christina Aguilera, REM, *NSYNC, and, of course, Britney Spears, this intoxicating new musical is “the ultimate night out” (Entertainment Weekly).

Based on the French novel, Les Liasions Dangereuses, and the classic cult film starring Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillipe and Sarah Michelle Geller, Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical pulls you into the manipulative world of Manhattan’s most dangerous liaisons: Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil.  Seduced by revenge and fueled by passion, the two diabolically charming step-siblings place a bet on whether or not Sebastian can deflower their incoming headmaster’s daughter, Annette Hargrove.  As the two set out to destroy the innocent girl—and anyone who gets in their way—they find themselves entangled in a web of secrets, temptation, and the cruelest game of all: love.

ABKCO Records has release Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical Original Cast Album on CD and digital platforms on March 8.  Coinciding almost perfectly with the 20th anniversary of the Roger Kumble film from which it is based, the new Off-Broadway musical uses hit songs from the 1990s as its central motif.  Cast members pay tribute to the decade with stellar performances of The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony,” Christina Aguilera’s “Genie In a Bottle,” the Cardigans’ “Lovefool” and the lead single “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” originally by Deep Blue Something now available through streaming services and as an ‘Instant Grat’ with pre-order

Musical, ‘Ain’t Misbehain’ will be jazzing into the Alhambra

In the 1920's and 1930's, Harlem was the epicenter of the music world.  It was a time when Manhattan nightclubs like the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom were the playgrounds of high society and Lenox Avenue dives were filled with piano players banging out the new beat known as “swing.”  Among the great composers to come out the era was Thomas "Fats" Waller, writer of more than 400 songs and inductee into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Ain't Misbehavin’, opening at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining on May 8, is a tribute to the black musicians of the 1920s and 1930s who were part of the Harlem Renaissance, an era of growing creativity, cultural awareness, and ethnic pride, and takes its title from the 1929 Waller song "Ain't Misbehavin'".

Ain't Misbehavin’ opened in the Manhattan Theatre Club's East 73rd Street cabaret on February 8, 1978.  The cast included Irene Cara, Nell Carter, AndrĂ© DeShields, Armelia McQueen, and Ken Page and was staged by Arthur Faria.  The New York Times reviewer wrote: “The show moves with the zing and sparkle of a Waller recording - filled with bright melodies and asides.”  The musical opened on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre in 1978, and transferred to the Plymouth Theatre and then to the Belasco Theatre where it closed I 1982, after 1604 performances and fourteen previews. The show won the 1978 Tony® Award for Best Muscial.

Said Alhambra Managing Partner, Craig Smith, “Believe it or not, Ain't Misbehavin' is the first musical I ever saw.  It's one of the shows that made me a jazz lover and a musical theater lover.”  He continued,
“What Fats Waller and his contemporaries did almost 100 years ago forever changed the musical landscape. We wouldn't have jazz today if it weren't for that era and the brilliance of folks like Fats Waller.  I can't wait to hear these sounds every night.”

The menu also plays a starring role in the show, with Executive Chef DeJuan Roy creating a menu based on some its themes.  The menu features: First Course (choice of one): Atlas Mountain Soup with lamb & lentils; OR Spinach Salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, mandarin oranges, Georgia Peanut Vinaigrette (GF).  Second Course (choice of one): Pork Ribeye Steak with brandy peppercorn demi-glace, Boursin cheese-whipped potatoes, roasted asparagus *GF*; OR Housemade Chicken & Dumplings; OR Fried Flounder with baked cheddar cheese grits, butter bean ragout; OR BBQ Jackfruit with Brussels sprout slaw, toasted baguette; Third Course (choice of one): Applesauce Cake with fresh whipped cream OR Sweet Potato Cheesecake.
