If you want to hear some good ole Honkey Tonk, Speak Easy, Cabaret, Swing music;
then you better get over to the Alhambra
Theatre & Dining to experience toe-tapping
sounds of an era gone by. This wonderful
show will remind you of the Roaring 20’s, Jive Talkin' and other LIVE music that is
better than any Big Band yesterday or today.
Ain't Misbehavin’, is
now playing at the Alhambra and is a
tribute to the black musicians of the 1920s and 1930s who were part of the
Harlem Renaissance, an era of growing creativity, cultural awareness, and
ethnic pride, and takes its title from the 1929 Thomas "Fats"
Waller song, "Ain't Misbehavin'".
Dynamic scenery, costumes and dancing compliment the magnificent voices that
pump out song-after-song with no resting until the intermission before the second
act. The Live Band comprised of: Anthony Felton (Conductor/Piano man), Sean Tills (Bass), Greg Hersey (Drums); Carson
Smisek (Trumpet); Alex Hernandez
(Reeds) and Diego A. Herrada (Trombone),
continually accompanied the five actors/singers/dancers/stage perfectionists.
The Five Actors, who played separate personalities, entertained effortlessly during
the entire performance. Tarra Conner
Jones* (Nell/Tarra), Cherry Hamlin* (Amelia/Cherry), Amitria Fanae*
(Charlene/Amitria), Christopher G. Patterson* (Andre/Christopher) and E. Mani
Cadet* (Ken/Mani). * Denotes Actors’
Equity Association.
The meal that Chef DeJuan Roy and his staff prepared, is scrumdiddlyumptious. The Spinach Salad, and Atlas Mountain Soup is
very tasty. This writer had the pleasure
of enjoying the Fried Flounder while our tablemates said that the Pork Ribeye
Steak is very, very tender. Our dessert
choice was the Sweet Potato Cheesecake. All
was yummy and, as always, the portions are quite adequate.
Don’t be Misbehavin’ and miss out on this seat-dancing, finger-poppin’ show.

In the 1920's and 1930's, Harlem was the epicenter of the music world. It was a time when Manhattan nightclubs like
the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom were the playgrounds of high society and
Lenox Avenue dives were filled with piano players banging out the new beat
known as “swing.” Among the great
composers to come out the era was Thomas "Fats" Waller, writer of more than 400
songs and inductee into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Ain't Misbehavin’,
opening at the Alhambra Theatre &
Dining on May 8, is a tribute to the black musicians of the 1920s and 1930s
who were part of the Harlem Renaissance, an era of growing creativity, cultural
awareness, and ethnic pride, and takes its title from the 1929 Waller song
"Ain't Misbehavin'".
Ain't Misbehavin’ opened in the Manhattan Theatre Club's East 73rd
Street cabaret on February 8, 1978. The
cast included Irene Cara, Nell Carter, André DeShields, Armelia McQueen, and
Ken Page and was staged by Arthur Faria. The New York Times reviewer wrote: “The show moves with the zing and sparkle of
a Waller recording - filled with bright melodies and asides.” The musical opened on Broadway at the
Longacre Theatre in 1978, and transferred to the Plymouth Theatre and then to
the Belasco Theatre where it closed I 1982, after 1604 performances and
fourteen previews. The show won the 1978 Tony® Award for Best Muscial.
Said Alhambra Managing Partner, Craig Smith, “Believe it or not, Ain't
Misbehavin' is the first musical I ever saw. It's one of the shows that made me a jazz
lover and a musical theater lover.” He
continued, “What Fats Waller and his
contemporaries did almost 100 years ago forever changed the musical
landscape. We wouldn't have jazz today if it weren't for that era and the
brilliance of folks like Fats Waller. I can't wait to hear these
sounds every night.”
The menu also plays a starring role in the show, with Executive Chef DeJuan Roy
creating a menu based on some its themes.
The menu features: First Course (choice of one): Atlas Mountain
Soup with lamb & lentils; OR Spinach Salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, red
onions, mandarin oranges, Georgia Peanut Vinaigrette (GF). Second Course (choice of one): Pork
Ribeye Steak with brandy peppercorn demi-glace, Boursin cheese-whipped
potatoes, roasted asparagus *GF*; OR Housemade Chicken & Dumplings; OR
Fried Flounder with baked cheddar cheese grits, butter bean ragout; OR BBQ
Jackfruit with Brussels sprout slaw, toasted baguette; Third Course (choice
of one): Applesauce Cake with fresh whipped cream OR Sweet Potato Cheesecake.

If you missed celebrating Valentine’s Day, you
still have time to enjoy some fine music from a notable musician. The Thrasher-Horne Center welcomes jazz, pop
and R&B legend George Benson to
its main stage for one magnificent night.
“George Benson is the best
guitarist in the world in all kinds of music. Rock, Jazz, Blues – he plays
better than anybody else!” – B.B. King
There are legends in the world of music… and then there are icons. Appreciated as both a musician and a performer
by millions, George Benson (a little history) has
always excelled at the dual role of expert improviser and vibrant entertainer
as he has performed with everybody from Miles Davis and Eric Clapton to
Stevie Wonder to Carlos Santana. A
guitar virtuoso and vocal sensation for over five decades, George Benson has
dominated the Billboard charts in a variety of styles and genres that has never
been matched. Over the span of his
illustrious career, George Benson has sold millions of records, performed for
hundreds of millions of fans, and cut some of the most beloved jazz and soul
tunes in music history.
This guitarist/vocalist is much more than
“This Masquerade,” “On Broadway,” “Turn Your Love Around,” and “Give Me the Night.” Benson is a flat-out inspiration, a
multi-talented artist who survived an impoverished childhood and molded himself
into the first true—and truly successful—jazz/soul crossover artist. Adored by fans and musicians alike, don’t miss
your opportunity to experience the energetic and ever-charming George Benson.

It’s almost time for Spring Break and time to make plans to enjoy your time
off. In early spring, Savannah’s
historic district serves as the backdrop for the extensive concerts, recitals,
dance parties, film and dance productions of Georgia’s largest musical arts
event. The Savannah Music
Festival (SMF) is an annual 17-day celebration incorporating a carefully
curated schedule of popular, folk, traditional, serious and studied music, all
performed by renowned artists from across the globe. Known for its intimate venues, devotion to
artistic excellence and high production values, SMF also fosters the creation
of new work and artistic collaborations.

Jazz and classical music are again at the forefront of SMF
programming, encompassing the majority of fine art at this year’s festival. However, two distinctive dance productions are
also part of the 2017 lineup, including Ballet Collective’s What Comes Next and
Argentinian dance ensemble Che Malambo. SMF’s
critically-acclaimed chamber music series is led for the 14th season by
violinist and associate artistic director Daniel Hope, who brings his musical
friends and colleagues from across North America and Europe for nearly three
weeks of original productions. The
return of SMF’s Piano Showdown highlights what Jelly Roll Morton called “the
Spanish tinge,” with Cuban virtuoso Chucho ValdĂ©s, Panamanian star Danilo
Pérez and SMF Associate Artistic Director Marcus Roberts. This is a small sample, please see complete
lineup here.

Pop fare is prevalent in the 2017 SMF lineup, beginning with
two nights of The Avett Brothers at the Johnny Mercer Theatre. Roots rock singer-songwriter Jason Isbell makes
his second SMF appearance, Nikki Lane and Parker Millsap share a bill, and Richard
Thompson is joined on a Lucas Theatre double bill by Sarah Jarosz. Pakistani
rock band Sounds of Kolachi plays on an only-in-Savannah co-bill with Hiss
Golden Messenger, and the Travelin’ McCourys and Jeff Austin Band team up for a
Grateful Ball. On a program called Chicago Blues Meets Gulf Coast Boogie, Lurrie
Bell performs alongside Marcia Ball and special guest James Cotton. On closing night Bruce Hornsby & the
Noisemakers are followed by a festival finale with The Wood Brothers. See complete lineup HERE.

At SMF, folk art involves diverse musical traditions and
their offshoots, starting with a double bill of two award-winning bluegrass
groups: Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out and Flatt Lonesome.
Opening weekend features a bevy of southwest Louisiana musicians: T’Monde, Pine
Leaf Boys, Feufollet, and Joel Savoy & Kelli Jones. Québécois traditional
ensembles Le Vent du Nord and De Temps Antan team up, Canary Island timple
player GermĂ¡n LĂ³pez makes his SMF debut, and Dom Flemons shares a bill with the
Foghorn Stringband. Sufi vocal warrior Sanam
Marvi performs inspirational music of Pakistan, Masters of Brazilian Music pairs
80-year-old virtuoso Hermeto Pascoal with mandolinist Danilo Brito’s choro
quintet, Edgar Meyer & Mike Marshall (Director of SMF’s Acoustic Music
Seminar) play a special duo show and Ukrainian “ethno-chaos” band DakhaBrakha
return to SMF with an original score for the 1930 Dovzhenko silent film, Earth. See a complete lineup HERE
