MOSH participates in Kids Free November

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is participating in Visit Jacksonville’s Kids Free November program again this year. Families are welcome to enjoy the Museum with up to five children admitted for free with each paid adult admission* throughout the month of November.

Guests can explore all that MOSH has to offer, including the Florida Naturalist’s Center, the Creation Station and its latest traveling exhibit, Da Vinci Machines & Robotics.

*Kids Free November cannot be combined with any other offer, with the exception of Military Appreciation Day (11/11), when all active and retired military service members and their families are welcome to enjoy the Museum for free, in partnership with VyStar Credit Union.

REGISTRATION: Pre-registration is encouraged to ensure a safe capacity; walk-up admission will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Adult admission is $15.95. Tickets can be pre-purchased HERE.

MOSH receives $100,000 gift

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) announced today that Stellar has committed $100,000 to the MOSH Genesis campaign. The contribution will be distributed in four annual $25,000 installments to begin this year.

Established in 1985, Stellar is a Jacksonville-based diversified contracting firm recognized as a global leader in architecture, engineering and construction services. With more than 800 employees, it is a company that celebrates innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration.

“Our support of MOSH Genesis reflects our commitment to investing both in the next generation of innovators, as well as a new era of Downtown vitality,” said Mike Santarone, Chief Executive Officer of Stellar. “MOSH has been a vital part of our community for decades, and we’re proud to be a part of this new chapter of growth.”

In March of 2019, MOSH announced the launch of its capital campaign with the goal of raising $20 million in community support from individuals, businesses and corporations, foundations and other community stakeholders. Originally called MOSH 2.0, the campaign has been retitled MOSH Genesis to better encapsulate the Museum’s vision of bold transformation for the institution and its role in Downtown revitalization.

This commitment expands Stellar’s connection to the Museum, which started with Richard Lovelace, Senior Vice President, who served on the MOSH Board of Trustees from 2018 through 2021.

MOSH hosts ‘The Craft of Comedy’

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) will host a comedy workshop on October 28 as part of the Museum’s MOSH After Dark programming. “The Craft of Comedy” event will feature Jacksonville-based stand-up comedians: Mike Freed, Jenn Weeks and Bob Lauver, and will teach attendees what it takes to make people laugh.

Guests will laugh along with the comics, try their hand at stand-up and end the evening exploring MOSH’s traveling exhibit, Da Vinci Machines & Robotics. This event is 21+; tickets include two drinks and light refreshments.

MOSH hosts a taste of the Philippines

WHAT: The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) will host the fourth annual A Taste of the Philippines event on Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 6 - 9 p.m.

Guests will enjoy a pop-up art exhibit and creative conversations with Filipino-American artists of Jacksonville in the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium, tastings by Jax Filipino Chefs and other local businesses, a panel discussion with local Filipina artists facilitated by Agnes Lopez who is highlighting her newest work: The Pinay Project, crafted cocktails* by Tanduay and much more.

MOSH presents ‘Da Vinci: Machines and Robotics’

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) has announced its next traveling exhibition, "Da Vinci: Machines & Robotics". The exhibition, produced by Artisans of Florence – International Pty. Ltd. & Niccolai Teknoart S.N.C. (Firenze), opens to the public September 18, 2021 and runs through January 16, 2022.

The exhibition will feature over 60 famous Leonardo Da Vinci creations, including machines and artwork. The interactive experience immerses guests into the 15th century and brings to life the most important and impressive designs of the original Renaissance Man, including his amazing flying machines; nautical, hydraulic and architectural innovations; groundbreaking applications of civil engineering; and incredible war machines. The exhibition also features children’s activities, computer animations, a cinema and reproductions of da Vinci’s greatest paintings. Created by Artisans of Florence, this exhibition celebrates an iconic artist and innovator, and is on loan from the Leonardo da Vinci Museum in Florence, Italy.

The Museum is celebrating 80 years on the First Coast, and this new exhibition kicks off its anniversary season. MOSH will host several events, including Museum by Moonlight on September 17 to kick off the da Vinci exhibition, a celebratory GALAxy event on April 30, 2022 and many other commemorations throughout the year. ‘MOSH Genesis Project’ led by DLR Group

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) today announced the selection of DLR Group as the lead architect for the MOSH Genesis project on the Northbank of Downtown Jacksonville. DLR Group will work with kasper architects + associates, a Jacksonville-based architecture firm and SCAPE, a New York-based landscape architecture firm on the project.

MOSH has operated in its current location on the Southbank of Downtown Jacksonville since 1969. The Museum’s operations have outgrown the 77,000-square-foot facility; building a new Museum will significantly expand the organization’s capacity to serve more students and visitors. Early projections estimate that by building a new facility at the Jacksonville Shipyards, MOSH will be able to serve 58,000 students (a 50% increase over pre-pandemic numbers) and 469,000 visitors (a 168% increase) each year.

Moving to the Northbank also allows MOSH to meet the growing demand for exhibits and programs that inspire innovation. The new Museum will comprise dedicated areas for exhibitions, classes and events, while also incorporating a new-and-improved space for the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium. This transformational reimagining of the Museum reinforces MOSH’s role as a vital civic institution and a destination for accessible, immersive and technologically advanced experiences.

“Over the past eight months, MOSH’s Board of Trustees and the Genesis Oversight Committee led a competitive process to identify the best possible design partners. We knew this project required the expertise of both a national firm with deep experience in museum architecture, and a local partner with existing relationships and knowledge of the Jacksonville market. Together, we know DLR Group, kasper architects + associates, and SCAPE will bring our vision to life,” said Bruce Fafard, President and CEO of MOSH.

DLR Group is a global integrated design firm specializing in significant cultural arts projects nationally and internationally. Ranked as one of the top Cultural Design Firms in the world by BD World Architecture, DLR Group brings to MOSH a multidisciplinary team with deep museum experience, including the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Museum at Bethel Woods (Woodstock Museum), the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

Kate Orff and the SCAPE team believe landscape architecture can enable positive change in communities by regenerating living infrastructure and public landscapes.”

In addition to creating an assemblage of technology and history, this project will serve as a social anchor for the local community, a space defined by notions of flexibility and a true integration between the building and its site,” said Vanessa Kassabian, AIA, LEED AP, DLR Group senior design leader.

MOSH is currently in negotiations with the Downtown Investment Authority (DIA) to develop a term sheet for a four-acre parcel at the Jacksonville Shipyards. The $85 million project is expected to take three years. Pre-construction site work could begin as early as Q1 2022, following all necessary site approvals through the DIA. MOSH to host LOL JAX Film Festival

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is hosting the LOL JAX Film Festival on August 13 & 15 in the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium. The two-day festival will feature select comedy shorts from local filmmakers, accompanied by local stand-up comedians.

This two-day event will showcase local filmmaking talent right here in Jacksonville. Select comedy short films will be featured alongside local stand-up comedians performing short sets. The entire showcase will be hosted by local comedian Jenn Weeks.

Guests will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with featured stars, enjoy live music by Jeremy Ryan and watch as winners are crowned during the LOL Jax “Best Of” award ceremony on the MOSH rooftop featuring live music, concessions and a cash bar available for guests.

MOSH to host ‘Rock the Moon’ event

MOSH will host a celebration of science and music with a “Rock the Moon'' concert and Planetarium experience on July 17. The Northeast Florida Astronomical Society (NEFAS) and local rock band Skyview will join MOSH in advance of the 52nd anniversary of the historic U.S. moon landing.

The event will include a happy hour Q&A with local astro-experts from NEFAS and a Bryan-Gooding Planetarium experience, with a live debut performance of Skyview’s latest EP, “Magnificent Desolation,” synced with lasers, lights and video to complete the immersive experience.

Weather permitting, local NEFAS experts will take viewers outside to look at the stars and experience a telescope demonstration after the concert.

An onsite bar and band merchandise will be available for purchase, as well as an opportunity to meet the band after the event.

MOSH celebrates 80 years in JAX

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is celebrating 80 years of curiosity and learning here on the First Coast. This civic institution will celebrate with special events and discounts throughout the coming year. Since its inception in 1941, MOSH has been at the forefront of science, education and fun for River City residents and guests of all ages.

To celebrate its anniversary, the Museum will present community programs throughout the year, including a special 80 years of history tour within the Museum; $8 admission on August 8 (8/8/21); the launch of a new Museum by Moonlight event series on Friday September 17, in conjunction with the opening of Da Vinci Machines & Robotics exhibition; and the MOSH GALAxy fundraiser event on April 30, 2022.

“Eighty years is quite an accomplishment for any establishment,” said Bruce Fafard, CEO of MOSH. “The Museum has been a beacon for innovation and lifelong learning, and will continue to serve curious minds for years to come. We are delighted to celebrate this milestone as we look ahead to what MOSH will be for the next eighty years. Throughout its history, MOSH has made bold moves to serve the public. In 1948, the Jacksonville Children’s Museum (the Museum’s original name) moved into its first permanent location, a Victorian home in Riverside. In 1969, it relocated to its current home at 1025 Museum Circle on the Southbank of the St. Johns River. In 1988, the Museum was officially rebranded as the Museum of Science & History — expanding its mission to serve more members of the community. And in 2020, the Museum announced its intent to build a new structure on the Northbank of Downtown Jacksonville.

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is celebrating the Fourth of July in style. The Museum will be open for extended hours from 5 – 9 p.m., followed by rooftop access from 9 – 10:30 p.m. to enjoy the City of Jacksonville’s fireworks display over the St. Johns River.

After enjoying the Museum and the mythical world of fire-breathing creatures in The Lost World of Dragons, sit back and watch fireworks light the night sky red, white and blue!

Concessions, including shaved ice from Kona Ice, light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, will be available for purchase on the rooftop.

‘Lost World Of Dragons’ comes to MOSH

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) today announced the opening date of its newest exhibition, “The Lost World of Dragons”. The exhibition, developed by Stage 9 Exhibits, explores the tales and tails of these ancient mythical beasts. Opening to the public on Saturday, May 29, The Lost World of Dragons is sure to breathe new fire into your imagination.

The exhibition will showcase a unique, custom and interactive experience for guests of all ages. Visitors will be immersed in stories and mythology of dragons –– from the lore and history of nearly every region and culture, spanning from Norway to ancient China. Interactive displays and photo opportunities deeply engage visitors in the amazing world of dragons. The Lost World of Dragons celebrates and explores both the history of and science behind how the dragon myth has grown through ages and cultures.

Adrienne Mayor, a Stanford University scholar, noted author and respected expert, provided consultation for this exhibition. Ms. Mayor has travelled the world and dusty archives to bring fascinating dragon myths and lore to life.

J. Wayne Weaver investment in the Museum of Science & History

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) today announced that J. Wayne Weaver has committed a significant contribution to the MOSH Genesis capital campaign. Weaver, a celebrated business leader and philanthropist, owns the shoe store chains Shoe Carnival and Nine West, and was the first owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL) from 1993 to 2011

Weaver made his commitment after meeting with Museum leaders to learn more about plans to relocate to the Northbank of Downtown Jacksonville.

“I’m impressed by the energetic vision behind MOSH Genesis, and feel the project is exactly what Downtown needs at this moment,” said Weaver. “My gift is not just an investment in the Museum, though. It’s an investment in our community’s future. Every child in Jacksonville deserves the very best educational opportunities, both in the classroom and through community treasures like MOSH.”

The Museum announced the launch of its capital campaign in March 2019, with the goal of raising $20 million in community support from individuals, businesses and corporations, foundations and other community stakeholders. To date, the campaign has secured more than 35 percent of the estimated total project cost of $85 million.

Museum of Science & History hosts Jazz Brunch

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is celebrating the long history of jazz in Jacksonville with a jazz brunch on the rooftop on May 2, 2021. The event includes a concert by two local jazz musicians, brunch catered by Riverfront Catering, bottomless mimosas as well as nonalcoholic drinks, and private tours of the Hixon Native Plant Courtyard and the Collections.

Safe Summer Camp at the MOSH

It’s time to celebrate with something exciting for the children to do! The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) announces plans to host in-person Discovery Camps this Summer. Beginning June 7, weekly camps will be held at the Museum for students aged Kindergarten through eighth grade. Campers will be broken out by age and will participate in various activities during each session.

SAFETY: MOSH is following all CDC recommendations to ensure the health and safety of staff, students and guests. Masks will be required for all during camp.

DATES: Monday through Friday June 7 - August 6, 2021
TIMES: from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

COST: Camp registration is now open and is $200 for Members and $250 for non-Members, with an option for extended care available for an additional $20. Extended Care is available, allowing registered campers to be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. and picked up as late as 5 p.m. Extended Care can be added at the time of registration for an additional $20 per day. Registration assistance is available –– contact the Museum for details.

JAX MOSH announces new CEO, Bruce Fafard

Bruce Fafard joined MOSH as Chief Operating Officer in May 2020, and was appointed as interim CEO in August 2020. The Board of Trustees Executive Committee confirmed his appointment as permanent CEO on October 15, 2020, after observing the immediate and positive impacts of his leadership on the Museum’s operations.

He brings more than 30 years of executive leadership experience from numerous industries to the role, including aerospace, insurance, manufacturing and retail. Prior to joining MOSH, Fafard served as President & CEO of 121 Financial Credit Union, CEO of Scient Federal Credit Union and held a variety of positions at Connex Credit Union. He earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of New Haven and his Bachelor of Science in economics from Southern Connecticut State University. He also earned the Certified Innovation Executive designation from the Credit Union Executive Society.

“Bruce’s enthusiasm for our mission at MOSH is matched by his breadth of experience,” said Christian Harden, Chair of the MOSH Board of Trustees. “He joined our team at a challenging time for cultural attractions worldwide and has quickly proven himself to be the leader we need at an important moment in MOSH’s history.  The staff, the Board of Trustees and our MOSH Genesis cabinet know Bruce is the ideal partner to execute our vision.”

In addition to his position at MOSH, Fafard currently serves on several boards and committees including Leadership Jacksonville, Northeast Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) and the JAX Chamber.

The Museum of Science and History announces new fundraising campaign

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) today shared details regarding a new fundraising campaign launched just in time for the holidays. MOSH Wonderful Time of the Year launched on November 27, 2020 and kicked off a season of giving with special promotions, events and donation opportunities.

Due to COVID-19, a lot of things have changed this year for cultural institutions across the world, and MOSH is not immune. Like many cultural institutions, the Museum lost revenue while it was closed to the public. This initiative will help make up for funds lost during that period, and support the Museum’s ongoing efforts to serve the community through in-person and virtual programming.

MOSH is partnering with WJXT to present the "MOSH Wonderful Time of the Year" online through a series of PSAs on the station and a special episode of River City Live. The campaign includes:

• Buy One, Gift One MOSH Memberships: New and renewing members can share the joy of lifelong learning with a friend or opt to let MOSH share it with a family in the community.

• Donation Match, Courtesy of Rebecca and Randy Johnson, Kristen and John Surface, and an Anonymous Donor: Through December 31, all donations will be matched dollar for dollar — doubling the impact of year-end giving. 

• Special MOSH episode of River City Live: WJXT’s viewers will learn all about MOSH’s history and impact on a special edition of River City Live, which will run throughout the campaign.

As a special treat this holiday season, the MOSH is offering $1 admission for children aged 3 - 12 with the purchase of a full-priced adult entry ticket through the month of December. Up to five children tickets at the discounted rate can be purchased per adult ticket.

‘MOSH’ gets donation from billionaire Shahid Khan

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) has announced that Shahid Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and his family have committed an initial $5 million gift to the MOSH Genesis capital campaign — representing the largest private donation to the campaign to date.

Khan praised the Museum’s proposal to build a new museum on the Shipyards property shortly after it was publicly announced on October 15. In a previous statement, he said he was “all in” on the Museum’s plans, and that the new museum “would be a spectacular addition to Downtown Jacksonville.” This gift reinforces Khan’s efforts to bring new development to the region, complementing his vision for Lot J to create a thriving sports and entertainment district surrounding TIAA Bank Field.

“The best downtown districts in the United States include urban parkland and cultural destinations, and we can have that here in Jacksonville with the Museum of Science and History anchoring a new riverfront park,” said Khan. “I’m hoping my contribution to the capital campaign will spark additional commitment from throughout the region so we can get started on a new downtown. I am confident it will, because I know I’m not the only person in Jax who believes it’s time to finally meet and even exceed our potential.”

The Museum announced the launch of its capital campaign in March 2019, with the goal of raising $20 million in community support from individuals, businesses and corporations, foundations and other community stakeholders. Originally called MOSH 2.0, the campaign has since been retitled MOSH Genesis to reflect a new beginning for the Museum as it casts a bolder vision for the institution, as well as the City of Jacksonville.

“MOSH would like to express our sincere thanks to Shahid Khan and his family for committing to this remarkable investment in MOSH Genesis.
