MOSH and VyStar host Military Appreciation

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH), in partnership with VyStar, today announced their plan to honor military families. In celebration of Veterans Day on November 11, all veterans, active duty service members and their families will receive free admission
to MOSH.

Earlier this year, MOSH announced VyStar as the first corporate donor for its capital campaign. In addition to a donation of $2.5 million, the agreement included sponsorship of a Military Appreciation Day — representing an extension of the credit union’s longstanding commitment to recognizing and honoring the service of our military communities.

Guests will enjoy full access to the Museum, including its newest exhibition, TOYTOPIA, a nostalgic walk down memory lane through toys. From Crayola® to Hasbro®, the exhibition includes toys across multiple generations. Boasting the world’s largest Etch A Sketch, a life-sized dollhouse and vintage arcade games, TOYTOPIA is fun for the whole family.

In addition, MOSH is hosting its newest signature exhibit, Faces to Remember, a moving photographic exhibit that tells the amazing story of perseverance and courage of eight Filipino World War II veterans through black-and-white portraits, taken by photographer Agnes Lopez, and video clips, produced by filmmaker Eric Torres. The exhibit is open now and runs through January 31, 2021.

“VyStar is grateful for all military members and the sacrifices they make every day for our country,” said Brian Wolfburg, President/CEO of VyStar Credit Union. “That is especially true on Veterans Day, when we stop to reflect and give thanks for their service and the difference it makes in our lives. We hope our military members and their families can come together to celebrate and enjoy the Museum of Science & History, one of the true landmarks in our community.”

“Northeast Florida’s history has been shaped by the military’s presence, and the many contributions that service members and their families make to our community,” said Bruce Fafard,CEO of the Museum of Science & History. “Our partnership with VyStar Credit Union is helping us honor them this Veterans Day, and we hope that their time within our museum will create special memories they can cherish forever.”

MOSH is committed to the safety of all guests during COVID-19. Masks are required for Museum entry for all visitors ages 6+, with single-use masks available for purchase for $1. Social distancing is encouraged, and hand sanitizing stations are available throughout the Museum. High traffic areas are cleaned and disinfected regularly. Timed ticketing is required to ensure capacity remains at safe levels throughout the day; tickets are available online below.

Cummer Museum’s recently appointed CEO leaving JAX

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens announced today that its George and Kathleen Gibbs Director and Chief Executive Officer, Adam M. Levine, Ph.D., will be departing the institution to return to the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) in Toledo, Ohio.  Levine will fill the role of the Edward Drummond and Florence Scott Libbey Director of TMA.  He will begin his new post in May of 2020.

Levine began his work with the Cummer Museum in October 2018 and fully assumed the role as Director and CEO in January 2019. Prior to relocating to Jacksonville to accept the position with the Cummer Museum, he held a variety of senior positions at TMA since 2013, most recently as deputy director and curator of Ancient art.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t admit that we are disappointed to lose Adam but the passion, excitement and growth at the Cummer of late is a result of the community’s desire for accessible, high quality cultural experiences and our institution’s ability to respond to that demand.  This commitment to Jacksonville will not diminish,” said Pam D. Paul, chair of the Cummer Museum’s Board of Trustees. “The Cummer is strongly positioned and committed to sustaining excellence throughout our galleries, gardens, exhibitions and programming, and we will continue to honor our long history of engaging and inspiring our community.  We have an incredible staff and highly engaged and committed board along with strong community support. Just as we did before, our board will work tirelessly to recruit the best and brightest new director and CEO.”

Over the past 18 months, the Cummer Museum, under Levine’s leadership, increased attendance and membership year-over-year by 20 percent, expanded educational offerings, developed an ambitious strategic plan, reconstructed its hurricane-damaged gardens and initiated new programs that increased accessibility to the museum for a range of audiences.

“It has been a privilege to lead the Cummer Museum and to partner with its inspiring board, donors, staff and volunteers on a variety of dynamic initiatives that moved the institution forward. I have loved my time in this community and am grateful for the warmth with which I was received and for the embrace of the Cummer Museum’s vision,” said Levine.

Levine’s last day at the Cummer Museum will be April 24, 2020.

Egyptian art comes to the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The newest exhibition at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, Striking Power: Iconoclasm in Ancient Egypt, will open on January 31, 2020.  The exhibition will be on view to the public through April 26, 2020.

Striking Power examines iconoclasm in Egypt, focusing on the legacies of kings Hatshesput (reigned c. 1478 to 1458 BCE) and Akhenaten (reigned c. 1353 to 1336 BCE), as well as the late Antiquity (3rd to 7th century AD).  Through thoughtful pairings of damaged works, from fragmented heads to altered inscriptions, with undamaged examples, Striking Power examines the patterns of damage inflicted on these sculptures for political, religious and criminal reasons in ancient times.

“Iconoclasm is a practice that spans history and continues to the present day — we still struggle with decisions about what to do with contested public sculptures — and this show sheds light on how other societies have dealt with similar issues,” said Adam Levine, the Museum’s George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director & CEO.  “This exhibition will raise timely questions about ownership, memory and visual culture that are as relevant today to us in Jacksonville as they were in ancient Egypt.”

Striking Power: Iconoclasm in Ancient Egypt is organized by the Brooklyn Museum in collaboration with the Pulitzer Arts Foundation.

Philanthropic support from the community is critical for the Museum to serve as a vibrant civic resource. Support for Striking Power: Iconoclasm in Ancient Egypt has been generously provided by:

Exhibition Lead Sponsor: Northern Trust.
Exhibition Sponsors: City of Jacksonville, Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, Director’s Circle Donors at the Cummer Museum, State of Florida, The Robert D. and Isabelle T. Davis Endowment, The Schultz Family Endowment, The Winston Family Foundation.

Arabic Women brings art exhibit to PBTS

‘Home’!  It is a physical manifestation of our identity.  As a built environment it is imbued with social and cultural meaning, while it provides shelter, security, and a place for our daily activities. Home is the surrounding landscape, both public and private.  Home is also an emotional space where we find a sense of belonging and attachment.

Home is a complex concept that has a diversity of meanings for all of us, but especially for those who are displaced.  In this exhibition women, from Iraq, Syria, and Egypt share their experiences of home...from tables where tea connects friends and family to the trauma of war and the need to seek refuge.  Home has often been neither ‘here’ nor ‘there’, but somewhere in-between.

For all of the women whose stories are told in this installation, this city has become their home.  The process of integration is long and complicated, filled with frustration and joy, new experiences and the heaviness of all that has been lost.  Preserving their cultures, building new relationships, and feeling welcome and whole in a new place is how most now define home.

As these women create a space where empathy flows freely, they are also countering the dangerous rhetoric, war mongering, and restrictive immigration policies that are far too prevalent, today and throughout America’s history.  We are all asked to recognize and reject the xenophobia and racism inherent in the calls ‘to go home’, knowing that it is in the honoring of our differences and the connectedness of our humanity that our shared home is strengthened.

The works displayed in the Players By The Sea’s lobby gallery are a selection of those that were in the original exhibition held at Yellow House in the Fall of 2019, which included the works of 15 women.  The show is the result of a partnership among: Artugee, an organization that uses art as a means for social connection, economic empowerment, and advocacy for Arab American women making their home in Northeast Florida; the Florida Immigrant Coalition and We Are All America organizations; and Yellow House, an organization committed to the intersection of art and social justice. It was co-curated by Malath Alarnosi, Basma Alawee, and Hope McMath, director of Yellow House.

Players by the Sea is thrilled to bring this work to the local community.  The community will be able to witness this work when they buy tickets to see “A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum”, Players by the Sea’s first musical of 2020.  Tickets are available online now, or by calling (904) 249-0289.  You won’t want to miss this cultural experience!

Southern Rock Memorabilia at the Thrasher-Horne Center

Thrasher-Horne Center is pleased to announce a special gallery exhibit of “Southern Rock Memorabilia” featuring the history of the Van Zant brothers.  This limited time collection is available for viewing through November 9, 2019.

Jacksonville might be best known as the “Birthplace of Southern Rock” thanks in large part to the legendary Clay County natives who formed Lynyrd Skynyrd and 38 Special.  Ronnie, Donnie and Johnny Van Zant were “simple men” who paved the way, alongside their beloved bandmates, for many other Southern Rock Musicians.

Items from this exhibit are on loan from several private sources including: Donnie and Johnny Van Zant, Ellen Powell (widow of Billy Powell of Lynyrd Skynyrd), Ed “Tinker” Wingate, the Honorable Judge Don Lester and historical data originated by the Clay County Archives.

This gallery exhibit will be on display for a limited time from September 27 through November 9, 2019.  The gallery is free and open to the public weekdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  It will also be available for viewing during the concerts of “Clint Black” (October 25) and “The Help Somebody 3”, featuring 38 Special, a “St. Michaels Soldiers” benefit (November 9).  Donnie and Johnny Van Zant plan to make a special on-stage appearance for this benefit.

Legendary French Art comes to the Cummer Museum

The newest exhibition at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950, will open June 14 to Museum Members; the exhibition will be on view to the public June 15 through September 6, 2019.  The exhibition features more than 60 works of art from the Brooklyn Museum’s renowned European collection and positions France as the artistic center of international modernism from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries.

Ranging widely in scale, subject matter and style, these paintings, drawings and sculptures were intended for public display and private collections, and were produced by the era’s leading artists, those born in France as well as those who studied and exhibited there, such as Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Highlighting one of the most dynamic and engaging periods in art history, the works in French Moderns capture the vibrancy and complexity of the Parisian art scene from 1848 until the end of World War II.  The vibrancy of this era in France attracted artists and creators from throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the likes of Augusta Savage — a Northeast Florida-born artist who became a leader of the Harlem Renaissance.  Her influence was celebrated through the Cummer Museum’s recent exhibition, Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman, which is now on display at the New-York Historical Society Museum & Library in New York City.

“In many ways, the modern world emerged between 1850 and 1950, and the artwork produced during this era continues to inspire and excite today,” said Adam Levine, the Museum’s George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director & CEO.  “By providing the Northeast Florida community with access to the Brooklyn Museum’s impressive collection of paintings and sculptures, we hope to connect the avant-garde perspectives that inspired Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism and Surrealism to our visitors and Members’ lives.”

Attendees of Soirée Bohème: A French Dinner Party will enjoy a first look at the exhibition on Thursday, June 13; a limited number of tickets are available at
cummermuseum.org. French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950 will open to Members of the Museum on Friday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.  The exhibition will be on full display to the public starting Saturday, June 15.

Philanthropic support from the community is critical for the Museum to serve as a vibrant civic resource.  Membership provides several benefits, such as early access to exhibitions like French Moderns. For every $100 donated to the Museum as part of a membership purchase or upgrade through September 30, the Museum will give a Museum membership to the family of a current fourth-grade Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) student through the Museum’s Family 2 Family Membership Match promotion.  Full details are available at
cummermuseum.org/F2F.

French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950 is organized by Rich Aste, former Curator of European Art, and Lisa Small, Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, Brooklyn Museum.

‘The Sound of Music’ is coming to the TH Center in OP

The brand-new production of The Sound Of Music”, produced by NETworks Presentations comes to Thrasher-Horne Center for only one performance.  The musical features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp.  The beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony®, Grammy® and Academy Award®–winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and the title song.

The Sound Of Music enjoyed extraordinary success as a live television production when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December, 2013 and was seen by over 44 million people.  2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.

In the words of Ted Chapin, President of Rodgers & Hammerstein, “I waited for a moment when we could rediscover THE SOUND OF MUSIC as it was originally created. Because of the enormous success of the film, few were aware that it started life as a hit Broadway show—and a very big hit at that!  The artists behind this production embraced what the authors wrote, looked at it all through modern eyes and, in so doing, found depth and resonance that has been recognized by critics and audiences across the country.  It's like visiting an old friend but finding yourself surprised as well.  It's also a reminder of why this show is such an evergreen."

The creative team for this new production includes: direction by Matt Lenz, based on the national tour’s original direction by three-time Tony Award® winner Jack O’Brien (Hairspray, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Coast of Utopia).  Original choreography by Danny Mefford (Dear Evan Hansen, Fun Home, The Bridges of Madison County, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) has been recreated by Jonathan Warren, with music supervision by Andy Einhorn (Hello, Dolly!, Bullets Over Broadway, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, The Light in the Piazza).  The design and production team is comprised of Tony Award® nominee Douglas W. Schmidt, set design (The Front Page, 42nd Street, Into the Woods
); Tony Award® winner Jane Greenwood, costume design (The Little Foxes, 2014 Special Tony Award® for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), six-time Tony Award® winner Natasha Katz, lighting design (Long Day’s Journey Into Night, An American in Paris
, Once, Aida, The Coast of Utopia, The Glass Menagerie) and Shannon Slaton, sound design (Present Laughter, The Humans).  Casting is by Stewart/Whitley.

‘Landscape of Guitar’ will be at Thrasher Horne

The Landscape of Guitar is a groundbreaking art & music production.  Animated paintings are sung to life as guitar birds fly over rolling guitar rivers and vivid guitar worlds in stunning HD.  Award winning singer-songwriters Patchouli & Terra Guitarra “one of the top nuevo-flamenco groups in the world” – ZMR, create a live symphony of color & sound to “inspire the human spirit” – Chicago Tribune. Experience the harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel, the guitars of the Gipsy Kings and the colors of Van Gogh.  This is a Gallery & Studio Theatre Event!

Before the performance at 7 p.m., meet the artists and enjoy light hors d'oeuvres as you join Bruce Hecksel and Julie Patchouli (Patchouli & Terra Guitarra) for an opening gallery reception of Bruce Hecksel’s Guitar Landscapes, in the Jack Mitchell Gallery.  Every element in Hecksel’s artwork is guitar-themed in these glittering, stained glass-like, acrylic paintings.  These original pieces of art are the base upon which the Landscape of the Guitar show was created. This special exhibit will be on display in the Jack Mitchel Gallery from January 18 through March 16, 2019.

Carlos Rolon’s artwork on view at the Cummer Museum

The front landscape of The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens welcomes Lost in Paradise, an exhibition by artist Carlos Rolon.  The exhibition features sculptures that weave together nature and humankind found in both Florida and Puerto Rico and will be on display from November 3, 2018 to October 20, 2019.  Park across the street and view the collection before you enter the building.

In September 2017 two catastrophic hurricanes (Irma and Maria) made landfall in Florida and Puerto Rico, leaving a trail of devastation in their wakes, and linked Jacksonville and Puerto Rico together again in their relief efforts beyond the Jones Act. In Jacksonville, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens sits on the St. Johns River.  The Museum was not spared from hurricane Irma’s storm surge, and the Cummer Gardens were left heavily damaged.  Within the same week, Puerto Rico was hit head-on by hurricane Maria, leaving the entire island without power, supplies, or infrastructure.

Rolón’s new works draw inspirations from the architecture and natural landscapes that both Florida and Puerto Rico share.  In Lost in Paradise, Rolón seeks to bring attention to nature’s unbridled ability to change its own landscape, but also humankind’s ability to overcome catastrophe and rebuild stronger than ever. Rolon’s “losa isleño” (island tile) pieces break from the traditional repetitive decorative design, departing from the typical rug or carpet style layouts to create new sculptural paintings that reference homes in Puerto Rico. Looking to his mirrored mosaic floral works, the artist has created indestructible plant life in an effort to memorialize and create monuments to the native plants of Florida and Puerto Rico.
