‘MOSH Genesis Project’ led by DLR Group
The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) today announced the selection of DLR Group as the lead architect for the MOSH Genesis project on the Northbank of Downtown Jacksonville. DLR Group will work with kasper architects + associates, a Jacksonville-based architecture firm and SCAPE, a New York-based landscape architecture firm on the project.
MOSH has operated in its current location on the Southbank of Downtown
Jacksonville since 1969. The Museum’s operations have outgrown the
77,000-square-foot facility; building a new Museum will significantly expand
the organization’s capacity to serve more students and visitors. Early
projections estimate that by building a new facility at the Jacksonville
Shipyards, MOSH will be able to serve 58,000 students (a 50% increase over
pre-pandemic numbers) and 469,000 visitors (a 168% increase) each year.
Moving to the Northbank also allows MOSH to meet the growing demand for
exhibits and programs that inspire innovation. The new Museum will comprise
dedicated areas for exhibitions, classes and events, while also incorporating a
new-and-improved space for the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium. This transformational
reimagining of the Museum reinforces MOSH’s role as a vital civic institution
and a destination for accessible, immersive and technologically advanced
experiences.
“Over the past eight months, MOSH’s Board of Trustees and the Genesis
Oversight Committee led a competitive process to identify the best possible
design partners. We knew this project required the expertise of both a national
firm with deep experience in museum architecture, and a local partner with
existing relationships and knowledge of the Jacksonville market. Together, we
know DLR Group, kasper architects + associates, and SCAPE will bring our vision
to life,” said Bruce Fafard, President and CEO of MOSH.
DLR Group is a global integrated design firm specializing in significant
cultural arts projects nationally and internationally. Ranked as one of the top
Cultural Design Firms in the world by BD World Architecture, DLR Group brings
to MOSH a multidisciplinary team with deep museum experience, including the
Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Museum
at Bethel Woods (Woodstock Museum), the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s
Renwick Gallery and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
“MOSH will have a dramatic impact on the Jacksonville region, telling its
unique story of human and natural history and culture,
innovation and current science,” said DLR Group Senior Principal Paul
Westlake, FAIA, who leads the firm’s Cultural + Performing Arts practice.
“We are honored to be part of this groundbreaking project and are fortunate to
be partners with both kasper architects and SCAPE. Erik Kasper and his team
impressed us with their design ethos, knowledge of Jacksonville processes and
their deep community-service efforts. Kate Orff and the SCAPE team believe
landscape architecture can enable positive change in communities by
regenerating living infrastructure and public landscapes.”
"DLR Group and the design team will capitalize on this opportunity to
create a unique, immersive cultural experience that is reflective of the rich
history of Jacksonville. In addition to creating an assemblage of technology
and history, this project will serve as a social anchor for the local
community, a space defined by notions of flexibility and a true integration
between the building and its site,” said Vanessa Kassabian, AIA, LEED AP,
DLR Group senior design leader.
MOSH is currently in negotiations with the Downtown Investment Authority (DIA)
to develop a term sheet for a four-acre parcel at the Jacksonville Shipyards.
The $85 million project is expected to take three years. Pre-construction site
work could begin as early as Q1 2022, following all necessary site approvals
through the DIA. For more information about the MOSH Genesis project, visit moshgenesis.com.

throughout the year, including a special 80 years of history tour within the

Moonlight event series on Friday September 17, in conjunction with the opening

lifelong learning, and will continue to serve curious minds for years to come.
We are delighted to celebrate this milestone as we look ahead to what MOSH will
be for the next eighty years. We look forward to inviting the community to join
in our celebration over the coming year.”
Throughout its history, MOSH has made bold moves to serve the public. In 1948,
the Jacksonville Children’s Museum (the Museum’s original name) moved into its
first permanent location, a Victorian home in Riverside. In 1969, it relocated
to its current home at 1025 Museum Circle on the Southbank of the St. Johns
River. In 1988, the Museum was officially rebranded as the Museum of Science
& History — expanding its mission to serve more members of the community.
And in 2020, the Museum announced its intent to build a new structure on the
Northbank of Downtown Jacksonville.
The community can join the celebration by sharing their favorite MOSH
experiences on social media with the tag #MOSHMemories, becoming a member,
donating to the Museum or volunteering. For more information, visit themosh.org.

J. Wayne Weaver investment in the Museum of Science & History
The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) today announced that J. Wayne Weaver has committed a significant contribution to the MOSH Genesis capital campaign. Weaver, a celebrated business leader and philanthropist, owns the shoe store chains Shoe Carnival and Nine West, and was the first owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL) from 1993 to 2011 Weaver made his commitment after meeting with Museum leaders to learn more about plans to relocate to the Northbank of Downtown Jacksonville.
“I’m impressed by the energetic vision behind MOSH Genesis, and feel the project is exactly what Downtown needs at this moment,” said Weaver. “My gift is not just an investment in the Museum, though. It’s an investment in our community’s future. Every child in Jacksonville deserves the very best educational opportunities, both in the classroom and through community treasures like MOSH.”
The Museum announced the launch of its capital campaign in March 2019, with the goal of raising $20 million in community support from individuals, businesses and corporations, foundations and other community stakeholders. To date, the campaign has secured more than 35 percent of the estimated total project cost of $85 million.
“We are honored to have J. Wayne Weaver’s support as we reimagine new ways to serve the broader Jacksonville community through a new museum,” said Bruce Fafard, CEO of MOSH.

MOSH and VyStar host Military Appreciation
The Museum of Science & History (MOSH), in partnership with VyStar, today announced their plan to honor military families. In celebration of Veterans Day on November 11, all veterans, active duty service members and their families will receive free admission
to MOSH.
Earlier this year, MOSH announced VyStar as the first corporate donor for its
capital campaign. In addition to a donation of $2.5 million, the agreement
included sponsorship of a Military Appreciation Day — representing an extension
of the credit union’s longstanding commitment to recognizing and honoring the
service of our military communities.
Guests will enjoy full access to the Museum, including its newest exhibition,
TOYTOPIA, a nostalgic walk down memory lane through toys. From Crayola® to
Hasbro®, the exhibition includes toys across multiple generations. Boasting the
world’s largest Etch A Sketch, a life-sized dollhouse and vintage arcade games,
TOYTOPIA is fun for the whole family.
In addition, MOSH is hosting its newest signature exhibit, Faces to Remember, a
moving photographic exhibit that tells the amazing story of perseverance and
courage of eight Filipino World War II veterans through black-and-white
portraits, taken by photographer Agnes Lopez, and video clips, produced by
filmmaker Eric Torres. The exhibit is open now and runs through January 31,
2021.
“VyStar is grateful for all military members and the sacrifices they make
every day for our country,” said Brian Wolfburg, President/CEO of VyStar
Credit Union. “That is especially true on Veterans Day, when we stop to
reflect and give thanks for their service and the difference it makes in our
lives. We hope our military members and their families can come together to
celebrate and enjoy the Museum of Science & History, one of the true
landmarks in our community.”
“Northeast Florida’s history has been shaped by the military’s presence, and
the many contributions that service members and their families make to our
community,” said Bruce Fafard,CEO of the Museum of Science & History.
“Our partnership with VyStar Credit Union is helping us honor them this
Veterans Day, and we hope that their time within our museum will create special
memories they can cherish forever.”

Museum of Science & History making plans for relocating
The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) announced its intent to build a new museum at the Shipyards property on the Northbank of Downtown Jacksonville, Florida.
This new facility would replace current plans to renovate and expand the
Museum’s existing structure at 1025 Museum Circle. Preliminary design and
construction projections indicate the new museum could be ready to welcome its
first members and guests in 2024. This new facility will allow the Museum to
provide continuous operation at its current site throughout the construction
process.
The Museum’s Board of Trustees engaged a cross-functional team of project
partners and stakeholders, including engineers, architects and commercial real
estate analysts, to evaluate the site. This process revealed new opportunities
to implement the Museum’s visitor experience plan, which was shaped by an
extensive community input process, and align MOSH’s vision with efforts to
create a vibrant network of civic attractions, parks and river access points on
the Northbank.
“As a mission-driven organization, our primary goal is to ensure our future
plans align with MOSH’s value to this community — both today and in the
future,” said Bruce Fafard, CEO of MOSH. “The presentation of a new site
option at the Shipyards property provides an exciting opportunity to reconsider
how we will serve Northeast Florida’s citizens and visitors in the years
ahead.”
Museum leaders anticipate pre-construction activity could begin in 2021,
pending completion of initial due diligence work approved in the FY 2020/2021
City of Jacksonville Capital Improvement Plan. Construction costs for the new
museum will be paid with funds from the MOSH 2.0 capital campaign.
“The next iteration of MOSH will serve as a transformative center for science,
innovation and humanities in Downtown. We welcome the support of businesses,
philanthropists and foundations that share our passion for activating the
riverfront, inspiring innovation, supporting critical workforce development and
driving tourism to Downtown Jacksonville,” said Jill Davis, Chair of the MOSH
2.0 campaign cabinet.
The Northbank plans build on the strong momentum in Downtown over the past few
years and align with the goals of the Curry administration. This development
will join other exciting potential projects along the Downtown riverfront,
including the Ford on Bay, new FIS headquarters and the recently announced Lot
J agreement.
“For nearly 80 years, MOSH has inspired Jacksonville citizens of all ages to
embrace the joy of lifelong learning. We applaud the Museum’s leaders for their
commitment to Downtown and their bold, innovative vision for the future that
will inspire generations and strengthen our reputation as a premier destination
in the Southeastern United States,” said Lenny Curry, Mayor of the City of
Jacksonville.
