Artists & World War I: The Aftermath - Thu, Dec 6 | 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. | Members Free, Non-Members $10 | Registration required. World War I was the first truly mechanized global war and it changed everything, including art. This four-part series examines how artists captured the Great War and the post-war world, creating the path for Modern Art that would send shock waves across the cultural landscape. Artists took stock of what the War had been for and what was left afterwards. The Germans had been the cultural hot house for Modern Art before the war, and now Otto Dix, George Grosz, Ernst Kirchner, and Kathe Kollwitz would turn their disillusion into searing statements of pain and grief. Georges Braque, Fernand Leger, and Andre Masson had endured the trenches, bore their scars, and turned towards Cubism and Surrealism in part to escape their memories. Art was torn from its traditional structure and faced a brave new world with Modern Art. Join Museum staff to discover Artists & World War I: The Aftermath including time in the galleries. Space is limited. For further information, please email or call 904.355.0630.
