Local Florida students present Disney’s show - ‘Newsies’

FSCJ Artist Series and the Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts are proud to present the 14th Annual High School Summer Musical Theatre Experience!  This program provides theatre opportunities to 7th-12th graders in the First Coast area and allows them to work hands-on with some of the highest recognized local and regional theatre professionals at the FSCJ Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts.  This year, participants will perform “NEWSIES” July 19-28 for six performances only!

It's time to carry the banner with Disney's NEWSIES!  Set in turn-of-the century New York City, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies."  When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right!

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, NEWSIES feature a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots).  Featuring the now classic songs: “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize theDay,” and “Santa Fe,” NEWSIES is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.

New Kids On The Block will be in JAX this weekend

Back in 2018, New Kids On The Block, the multiplatinum selling pop super-group, unveiled an epic lineup for their highly anticipated 2019 tour.  NKOTB took to the Today Show plaza to reveal The MixTape Tour with very special guests Salt-N-Pepa, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson and Naughty by Nature.  The five iconic pop and hip-hop acts will hit the road together for the first time ever on a 53-city tour across North America next summer, including its stop at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on July 12, 2019.

To celebrate the event, NKOTB surprised fans by dropping an epic, throwback track, “80s Baby” featuring their new touring partners, Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty By Nature, Debbie Gibson and Tiffany.  The track takes listeners on a nostalgic yet refreshingly modern and fun ride through 80s song references and fresh verses- just a small glimpse into the party that will be The MixTape Tour.  Stream the song HERE.

With over 100 million combined records sold worldwide, NKOTB, Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty by Nature, Tiffany and Debbie Gibson will fill arenas with hit after hit when they take to the stage next summer.  Always upping the ante, NKOTB have packaged the ultimate lineup for a once in a lifetime live show experience.  The group will return to the stage after 2018’s touring hiatus to perform fan favorite number one hits like: “Hangin’ Tough,” “I’ll Be Loving You (Forever),” and “Step By Step”.  When tour mates Salt-N-Pepa, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany and Naughty by Nature hit the stage, they bring with them top chart hits and legendary catalogues to keep fans out of their seats all night.  The tour is sure to be one of the can’t miss events of the summer featuring an unforgettable night full of smashes spanning across generations.

NKOTB made the announcement on the heels of their SOLD-OUT Apollo Theater show celebrating the 30th anniversary of their hit packed, breakout album Hangin’ Tough.  The special one night only engagement sold out within minutes of onsale and saw NKOTB gracing Harlem’s famed Apollo stage for the first time since they debuted “Please Don’t Go Girl” at the Apollo’s notoriously tough amateur night.  The career defining album, Hangin’ Tough produced hits like: “Please Don’t Go Girl,” "You Got It (The Right Stuff)", “I'll Be Loving You (Forever)", and “Cover Girl.”  The crowd erupted when the band confirmed on stage that Hangin’ Tough will get a special anniversary re-issue in early 2019 with new, never been released music.

Produced by Live Nation, The MixTape Tour has embarked on its three-month journey wrapping up in Orlando on July 13th, and July 14th in Hollywood, FL.

‘Disney’s The Little Mermaid’ splashes into the Alhambra

Since report cards have been available for your viewing pleasure, it’s time to reward your little scholars with dinner and a terrific musical presentation (“Disney’s The Little Mermaid”, presented by Snyder Heating & Airconditioning), at the historic Alhambra Theatre & Dining.  The singing is outstanding, the dancing is right on time, the costumes are soooooo colorful, and the spoken lines are wonderful!

The entire cast, chosen by Director/Producer Tod Booth*, is magnificent in their glowing, glamorous, colorful costumes.  As said earlier, the vocals stand out especially ‘Ariel’ portrayed by Grace Gibbons* actual performer at Walt Disney World.  Her voice and underwater mannerisms are very close to the Disney Movies’ character that we know and love.

Some other performers who have stood out to this reviewer are: Grimsby - Timothy Ellis*, Flounder - Evan Gray*, the incomparable Sebastian - Rendell Anthony DeBose, and the entire Ensemble (some of whom play multiple roles).

Ever since this writer started covering entertainment at this venue, back in 2010, there have been many memorable shows that the Alhambra  Theatre & Dining’s set designer, Ivan Black, has excelled in creating.  Besides “Disney’s the Little Mermaid” being among some of the classic Set Creations that have graced the Alhambra stage others have been: “Phantom,” Little Shop of Horrors,” “BIG” “Shrek the Musical,” “Seussical the Musical,” The Wiz,” Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” & “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”  These are just a few of the many other (try to name a few others that you feel have exceeded your expectations).  Most of these productions can be found in the “50 Years of Memories” sold in the Alhambra foyer.  Many accolades go out to the entire Production Staff for a job “well-done”.

The Watermelon & Tomato Salad, Shrimp and Leek Gratin & Ariel’s Strawberry Cupcake are my top winners.

(If you purchase a “Strobe-light Ring” for your little one, please make sure that they keep them from flashing during the Show.)  * denotes Actors Equity Association members *.

Tickets are going quickly, so if you desire to have a good time with friends and family, order your tickets TODAY!  This show is NOT just for children.  Adults have a ball too.

‘Little Black Dress’ will be in JAX for three nights

FSCJ Artist Series, the official website for Broadway in Jacksonville, presents the musical Little Black Dress.  It’s the fearlessly funny ladies’ night out musical that will make its Jacksonville premier at the Times-Union Center from June 25-27, 2019.  Enjoy a wild and unforgettable evening, filled with hilarious show-stopping musical numbers, “Magic Mike” influenced dancing, and loads of improvised audience mayhem!

“Little Black Dress” follows the story of Dee and her best friend Mandy.  The music is energetic and dynamic, running the gamut from hilarious songs about childbirth to heartfelt songs about love and friendship.  This is the show that every woman can relate to!

After being on tour for close to three years together with the wildly successful Spank! The Fifty Shades of Grey Parody, writers Danielle Trzcinski and Amanda Barker saw an audience they never knew existed.  Thousands of women who wanted to go to the theatre not just to see a show, but to have an experience where they could laugh, party, and let loose... oh, and also see some stripping from a very sexy man.  So, they grabbed a couple of their super talented friends, award winning director Christopher Bond and Broadway vocal arranger and composer Natalie Tenenbaum, and together wrote the story of Dee and her best friend Mandy.  Together we witness the girls’ major life events in their little black dresses - first job interview, first date, first awkward sexual experience - which happens more than once - first funeral, and more!  Using hilarious improv, catchy songs, and a heartfelt story, “Little Black Dress” has made audiences across the globe laugh, cry, and party!

After readings at the Dramatists Guild and the highly prestigious BMI workshop in New York City, they finally brought “Little Black Dress” to the Candy Box Theatre at the Second City in Toronto and were blown away by the audience’s overwhelming response.  People LOVED IT!  Danielle Trzcinski (SPANK! The Fifty Shades Parody!), Amanda Barker (Sirius XM’s Canada Laughs), Natalie Tenenbaum (Tony Nominated Mean Girls Broadway) and Christopher Bond (DISENCHANTED, Evil Dead The Musical!) bring you the perfect show for every bachelorette party, birthday, or date night. Even the fellas can’t help but enjoy “Little Black Dress”!

Reviews: “Loved Every Minute!” - Siriusxm.  “Little Black Dress" promises to be delightfully hilarious!” - Broadway World.  “Writing is sharp and performance is brilliantly executed.” - The Torontoist.  “I loved it and I wasn't even drunk!” - Nicole.

Carrie Underwood is coming to Cry Pretty in JAX

Receiving the most awards of all time, the 29th CMA Music award winner is now officially on tour.  Seven-time Grammy winner and Pollstar’s three-time top female country touring artist, Carrie Underwood, has launched a new arena tour, The Cry Pretty Tour 360.  Sponsored by CALIA, the new tour will kick off on May 1 in Greensboro, NC, and will play 55 arenas across the U.S. and Canada, including the only Florida stop in Jacksonville on October 20, 2019.  The tour is promoted by AEG Presents.  Her new show will be performed in the round featuring an all-female bill.  She will be joined on tour by special guests Maddie & Tae and Runaway June.

Tickets for the JAX concert are available at the Tom Bush Family of Dealerships Box Office at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena and through Ticketmaster.  For more information about a
location near you, info about the Cry Pretty album/ticket bundle, go to her official website.

Underwood released her eagerly-anticipated new album, Cry Pretty, on September 14, 2018.  Cry Pretty is her first studio album on Capitol Records Nashville and marks the first time she has co-produced her own album.  The lead single and title track, “Cry Pretty” debuted as the #1 song in the U.S. all-genres.  The song also topped download charts in 38 countries around the world and amassed over 3.5 billion social impressions across 66 countries during its week of launch in April, which was culminated with a show-stopping performance on the “2018 ACM Awards” telecast.  Carrie co-wrote the powerful single with Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, and Liz Rose (aka The Love Junkies) and co-produced Cry Pretty with fellow writer/producer David Garcia.

Following her successful “The Storyteller Tour – Stories in the Round,” the new production will feature a brand-new stage in the middle of the arena floor, creating a unique 360-degree setting to allow fans on all sides of the arena an intimate view of the concert.  Barry Lather (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson) is the tour’s Creative Director, and Nick Whitehouse/Fireplay (Justin Timberlake, Beyonce) is Production Designer.

“I love performing in the round,” says Underwood.  “It’s so much fun for me and the band to play in every direction and creates a much more intimate and immersive experience for the audience, even in a larger arena setting.  It’s been exciting to introduce audiences to Cry Pretty and I can’t wait to bring the new album to life on this tour, along with all of the songs we love to play live.  I’m thrilled to be going out with an amazing line-up – Maddie & Tae and Runaway June are incredible artists that are going to bring even more electricity to our shows.”

When the Alhambra Theatre & Dining opens its production of “Disney’s Little Mermaid,” there will be a real live “mermaid” in the house.  Grace Gibbons has been one of the most recent actors to play as Aerial at Orlando’s Walt Disney World, and she will be taking center stage as Aerial.

The Alhambra stage will be turned into an undersea wonderland thanks to set designer Dave Dionne.  The Alhambra has invested in new lighting for the show, giving the room the feel of water rising and falling to delineate between the “merworld” and the human world.  “Our goal is always to provide a great theatrical experience, and some challenge more than others.  This has been a really fun set to build and think through,” said Dionne.

Executive Chef DeJuan Roy has created a menu based on this Under The Sea theme.
First Course (choice of one): Watermelon & Tomato Salad with arugula, feta cheese, red onion and balsamic vinaigrette (GF), or Manhattan Clam Chowder.
Second Course (choice of one): Shrimp & Leek Gratin rice pilaf, roasted asparagus *GF*, OR House-Made Giant Meatballs & Spaghetti served with garlic bread, or BBQ Beef Brisket with baked beans, potato salad *GF*, or David’s Taco Salad, a tortilla bowl filled with Spanish rice, roasted vegetables, black beans, roasted corn, cheese, salsa & sour cream.
Third Course (choice of one): Fruit Loops™ Strawberry Cupcake with berry compote, fresh crème, or Mango Rice Pudding.
In addition to a three-course dinner, the Alhambra also presents a Kid-friendly Buffet consisting of: Corn Dog, Pepperoni Pizza, Tater Tots and Green Beans.

Adapted from the 1989 Disney animated film, The Little Mermaid is actually based on the story by Hans Christian Anderson.  Set deep on the ocean floor in the merfolk kingdom, a concert in honor of a thwarted coup d'état by Ursula is underway, being performed by the daughters of Triton the sea king. King Triton's court composer, Sebastian the crab, has composed a song for girls to perform ("Daughters of Triton").  However, the youngest daughter, Ariel, is not there for her solo, bringing the concert to a halt.  Ariel has forgotten about the concert and is swimming around the surface, admiring a new item for her collection — a fork.  She reveals that she is fascinated with the human world ("The World Above").  Together with her best friend Flounder, Ariel visits Scuttle and his fellow seagulls to ask about the human things she's collected, and he explains them somewhat erroneously as "Human Stuff".  It is in the human world that she meets Prince Eric, and romance – and some mayhem – ensue.

Disney’s Little Mermaid musical was nominated for multiple awards in 2008, including a Tony® Award for Best Original Score, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and a Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album.  It ran on Broadway for nearly 700 shows and 50 previews.  It also ran during numerous US tours and in 10 countries.
