MOSH hosts ‘Arts Infusion Workshop’

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) will host an Arts Infusion Workshop with artist Stephanie Pyren-Fortel on September 18. The workshop will feature an educational hands-on experience.

Local artist, Stephanie Pyren-Fortel will walk participants through the color wheel and how she blends bold hues into her artwork, titled Spirit, on display in the MOSH Lobby. Afterward, guests will play with the different colors on the wheel to blend their own hues from light to dark. 

This workshop is free and open to the public. All ages welcome.
Materials for the workshop will be provided.

Funding has been generously provided by the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation.

Tommy Decarlo and Rudy Cardenas in concert

The Florida Theatre is pleased to announce The Music of Boston with Tommy DeCarlo, Boston singer since 2007, and The Music of Journey with American Idol’s Rudy Cardenas on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 8 p.m.

Tommy DeCarlo has been on the road touring with legendary rock band Boston since 2007, playing to sold out audiences all over the world. This show closes with a full set of Boston classic hits from the 1970's and 80's with a top-notch band of touring professionals including August Zadra on lead guitar/vocals (Dennis DeYoung Band), Steve Ferlazzo on keyboards/vocals (Avril Lavigne/Nuno Bettencourt), John Douglas on drums (Sammy Hagar/Michael Anthony), Tommy DeCarlo Jr. on guitar/vocals and Payton Villigan on bass/vocals.

Born in Rome, New York, Tommy’s interest in music began in elementary school when he joined the school choir. He recalls, “Every year I would try out for one of the lead singing solo parts and every year I never got one. They always told me my voice was too soft.” Many years later, he would show the world that was not the case.

Tommy started playing piano when he was 14 years old, self-taught on an old upright in his living room. And as far as singing goes, DeCarlo explains, “Well, I truly have to thank Brad Delp for helping me develop my vocal abilities. I have said that I never took singing lessons but that's not exactly true. It was Brad who taught me how to sing, even though he never knew it. When I first began to listen to BOSTON as a young teenager, I absolutely loved Brad’s voice and it gave me hope and inspiration at times in my life when I needed it. It wasn’t like I was trying to sing like Brad, it was just that I loved to sing along with him.”

His journey that led to BOSTON happened many years later when in 2007 he posted BOSTON cover songs and other music on his myspace page, and even wrote a song in honor of Brad Delp upon his passing. Hearing of a tribute being planned, Tommy reached out to the band offering to sing should they need any additional vocalists. “I sent an email to the BOSTON camp which included covers of the songs Smokin' & Don't Look Back, never thinking I’d get a reply."

Several weeks later, Tom Scholz happened to hear Tommy’s cover of “Don’t Look Back,” and was shocked. Knowing every nuance of Brad’s voice, he could not believe that this was not Brad singing, exclaiming, “I haven’t heard anyone else sing like that in 35 years.” Scholz contacted Tommy and invited him to come and sing a few songs at the Brad Delp tribute. DeCarlo’s reaction was, “I would have never believed this could happen in a million years. The next thing I knew I was on my way to Boston to sing with BOSTON … are you kidding me?"

Tommy was asked to join BOSTON on their 2008 tour and has sang on every Tour since. Prior to that, Tommy was working as a credit manager at The Home Depot, had never been in a band, and the largest crowd that Tommy had sung in front of was a talent show in high school. Tommy has been touring and playing to sold out audiences all over the world.

In a bestclassicbands.com interview with Boston founding member Tom Scholz said, "Tommy does for Boston on stage what Brad Delp did for Boston in the studio. Brad was the best male studio singer I've ever heard and Tommy is the best male stage singer I've ever heard."

In 2012, Tommy co-founded with his son, Tommy Jr., DECARLO. The band released their original debut album Lightning Strikes Twice in 2020, earning them a featured article in popular BILLBOARD MAGAZINE as 2021 Grammy® contenders. Their chart-topping hit “You Are The Fire” went viral on streaming platforms world-wide shortly after its release.

The two show package starts with The Music of Journey with singer Rudy Cardenas of American Idol. Rudy is a finalist from Season 6 of American Idol, and here he'll perform a full set of Journey classic hits, including the hits from both the Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie-eras. Rudy has a long relationship with Journey music, starting in 2007 when he debuted on American Idol singing "Open Arms" on national TV. He went on to cover two Journey songs; "I'll be Alright Without You" on his album Fly (2012), and "Separate Ways" on his album Son of a Gun (2016).

Alan Parsons Live Project featuring special guest Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy at the Florida Theatre on September 11, 2021 has been postponed. We’re working with Alan to reschedule the show. Please see below for the official statement from Alan’s team:

New medical Q and A show on public radio

WJCT Public Media today announced its newest original program and local production, “What’s Health Got to Do with It?” The program will debut Saturday, September 18 at 4 p.m. on WJCT News 89.9 F.M.

This new weekly, hour-long program will be hosted by Dr. Joe Sirven, an engaging physician / journalist who currently serves as a professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic’s Florida campus. Each week, Dr. Sirven will explore how health care intersects with our daily lives — helping to guide listeners through an increasingly convoluted medical bureaucracy.

The interview-based show will cover topics such as accessing treatment, finding the right doctor, sustaining good health, getting insurance coverage and seeking a cure for both common and complex medical issues. Listeners will be able to engage with Dr. Sirven through calls, emails and social media, creating a new community around locally focused and solution-driven care.

“Health care is a deeply personal, yet universal, topic. Here in Northeast Florida, it’s also woven into our civic landscape, cultural identity and quality of life,” said David McGowan, President and CEO of WJCT Public Media. “We’re eager to start this new journey with Dr. Sirven, and look forward to engaging our neighbors in healthy dialogue through this show.”

Florida/Georgia baseball game is coming

The University of Florida and the University of Georgia in partnership with the City of Jacksonville, ASM-Global Jacksonville and 121 Financial Ball Park announced that they will be playing their annual Florida vs. Georgia fall baseball game on Friday, October 29 at 121 Financial Ball Park with the first pitch happening at 6:30 PM. This game will be played ahead of the annual Florida vs. Georgia rivalry football game on Saturday, October 30 at TIAA Bank Field.

Tickets for this year’s baseball game will be priced at $15 and will go on sale this Friday, September 10 at 10 A.M. on Ticketmaster.com.

Additional information and details about activities taking place in Jacksonville during Florida vs. Georgia weekend will be announced in the coming weeks.

About Florida–Georgia: The Florida-Georgia football rivalry is an American college football rivalry game played annually by the University of Florida Gators and the University of Georgia Bulldogs. ‘Sawyer Brown’ appearing at the Florida Theatre

The Florida Theatre is pleased to welcome Sawyer Brown on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 8 p.m. The last time that the group came to JAX was back in August of 2019. You don’t want to miss him this year. COVID protocol may change by the time this event is scheduled to take place.

Florida’s own Sawyer Brown is a country music band that spans 3 decades. Originally formed in 1981 in Apopka, Florida, the band has released 18 studio albums and charted over fifty times on the Hot Country Songs charts, including three number one singles; “Step That Step”, “Some Girls Do” and “Thank God For You”.

The group's members were originally part of country pop singer Don King's road band. When King stopped touring in 1981, the group decided to stay together and eventually auditioned for Star Search in 1983. They won the grand prize of $100,000 and a recording contract. The band signed with Capitol Records and scored a Top 20 hit with their first single, "Leona", in 1984. That success was quickly followed by their first number one hit, "Step That Step".

Sawyer Brown is comprised of Mark Miller (lead vocals), Gregg Hubbard (keyboards/piano), Joe Smyth (drums/percussion) and Shayne Hill (lead guitar).

Vocalist Mark Miller has written many of Sawyer Brown’s hits, including “Step That Step,” “The Walk,” “Thank God for You,” “The Boys and Me,” as well as the band’s anthem: “Some Girls Do.” Miller is also responsible for discovering the band Casting Crowns and has produced all of the band’s CDs, winning a Grammy for his work with them along the way. In April 2013, Ring the Bell, a movie that Mark wrote and produced, was released—and he has more movies in the pre-production stage.

Local chicken restaurant has new name

Huey’s Nashville Hot Chicken today announced its plans to rebrand its Murray Hill restaurant as Bold Birds Nashville Hot Chicken, effective September 1, 2021.

The fast-casual eatery has seen strong success since its grand opening in May of 2020 at 1173 Edgewood Avenue S. The 3,100-square-foot foodie favorite, voted Best New Restaurant and Best Takeout 2020 by Folio Weekly, is a spicy taste of Nashville that features both indoor and outdoor seating. The menu highlights a myriad of hot chicken dishes — including the classic hot chicken, entrée salad versions and Southern sides, alongside six beers on tap, including local brews from Tabula Rasa and Bold City Brewery.

Nashville native Hughes Brown opened the restaurant to bring a taste of home with him when he relocated with his wife back to her hometown of Jacksonville. The team has grown steadily, bringing more than 25 jobs to the historic neighborhood. The new name is a way to honor their commitment to Jacksonville, by combining its “Bold New City of the South” nickname with the restaurant’s signature dish. This change uniquely positions the popular restaurant for future growth in and out of the market.

“Murray Hill has welcomed us completely, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to continue to grow in this great neighborhood,” said Brown. “We’ve been embraced and want to expand on the success of our little chicken joint. Rebranding to Bold Birds was an easy choice, being in the Bold City, and we can’t wait to invite everyone in to try us out if they haven’t already. Hot chicken dates back to the 1930s here in the United States, and the Brown family has perfected their popular offerings over the last year — including the top-selling hot chicken sandwich. Patrons can enjoy heat levels ranging from classic to hotter than a motherclucker, the eatery’s spiciest option. The restaurant also offers classic Southern dessert options, such as banana pudding and key lime pie, to cool you down at the end of your meal.

Steely Dan tour comes to FL and other areas

Legendary jazz-rock icon - STEELY DAN – has set the “Absolutely Normal Tour ’21,” which kicks off with a four-night stand in Miami, Florida from Tuesday, October 5th, through Saturday, October 9. The U.S. tour will hit 15 cities over 28 concerts before wrapping at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. Tickets for the tour, which is promoted by Live Nation, will now through Ticketmaster. There’s a new CFO at the Cummer

The Cummer Museum of Arts & Gardens has appointed Kimberly Noble as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO), a newly created position that will oversee strategic and tactical matters related to budget management, forecasting and cultivation of new revenue opportunities. She began her position in June.

Her primary responsibilities include collaborating with the Museum’s Director and CEO to develop and implement cross-department programs, guiding the Museum’s short- and long-term financial performance strategies, identifying and mitigating institutional risk, leading the annual budgeting and planning process, liaising with the Chief Investment Officer and providing regular updates to the Museum’s executive team and Board of Trustees.

“Kimberly’s attention to detail, spirit of collaboration and seasoned knowledge of the field have already proven to be an asset to the Museum,” said Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Ph.D., the Cummer Museum’s George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director & Chief Executive Officer. “As we focus relentlessly on our mission, build upon our historic successes, grow our audiences and infrastructure, and expand our donor base, it is abundantly clear that Kimberly is an exemplary addition to the Museum team.”

Noble brings more than 17 years of executive-level financial leadership to the Museum. Most recently, she served as the CFO of St. Johns Country Day School; earlier in her career, she held financial management roles with Regency Centers, Southeastern Grocers, Johnson & Johnson and CSX Transportation. She served as the treasurer for The Florida Theatre’s Board of Directors and provided financial consultation services to the Board of Trustees of Grace Episcopal Day School. She holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance & Security Analysis from the University of Florida, where she also earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She holds the Certified Financial Manager designation from the Institute of Management Accountants, as well as the Certified Green Belt distinction from Lean Six Sigma.

“As a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, I have long admired the Cummer Museum and the vital role it serves in the community,” said Noble. “I am honored to join the Museum during this milestone year, as we prepare to celebrate our 60th anniversary, and I look forward to working with Dr. Brownlee and the Board to broaden the Museum’s role as a cultural resource for our community today and generations to come.”
