I’m so glad we’ll have this comforting, inspiring and inclusive tradition to provide much-need and well-earned joy.”

Just like the original, in The Hip Hop Nutcracker, Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince go on a dream adventure battling a gang of mice, visiting the land of sweets and learning the lessons of the holiday season. Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s beloved story from traditional 19th Century Germany to the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of contemporary New York City. Through this re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, the dynamic performers of The Hip Hop Nutcracker take us on a journey that celebrates love, community and the magic of the holiday season.

The show How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying will be in town until March 22, 2020, at the Alhambra Theater & Dining.  This is a musical/comedy that will keep you “Laughing-Out-Loud” all afternoon or evening.  The Alhambra’s adaptation of the original movie, and 1995 Broadway production will keep your interest especially under the direction of Tod Booth*, Choreography from Shain Stroff*, Musical direction led by Cathy Murphy Giddens & the wonderful set designs of Ian Black and David Dionne.

All the “HTSIBWRT” actors are very entertaining with their singing, acting, dancing and quirky mannerisms.  Ricky Cona* plays the wonderfully funny character Bud Frump, whose voice you will love to hear and gladly wait for his next line in the show.  Christopher Lewis stars as J. Piertrepont Finch, who delightfully freezes in place when the narrations from the book that he references often, comes to life.  Kudos also go out to Maddie Bryan who plays J.B.'s cutie-pie, ex-night-club cigarette girl Hedy La Rue.

‘Bandstand’ is a must-see if you are in the area

Orchestra Pit for 'Bandstand'
The Tony Award®-winning Broadway musical, Bandstand, is in Jacksonville, FL for only seven more performances at the Times Union Center Moran Theater.  If you know anything about life after the military, or the comradery of soldiers who share their talents, heartaches, promises, mental demons, injustice and dreams of a future life and how that life use to be; then you need to see this heartwarming musical.  The storyline is easy to follow and might transport you back to the Viet-Nam era, or any post-wartimes experiences that you might have endured.

The choreography is wonderful and the songs throughout the musical are very well done.  Kudos to the marvelous singing done by Jennifer Elizabeth Smith (what a powerful voice).  Accolades to the orchestra in the pit: (Miles Plant, Brian Victor, Michael Brinzer, Ross Kratter and Brian Ganch); and to the cast/band members on stage (Rob Clove, Benjamin Powell, Scott Bell, Louis Jannuzzi III, Zack Zaromatidis & Jonmichael Tarleton) who played along.  The show moves along smoothly and is well worth your investment of time and money.

'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying' with a dinner

Power, sex, ambition, greed…it’s just another day at the office in the Alhambra Theater & Dining’s satire of big business.  Perhaps it’s just a strange coincidence that WWW are the initials of the company at the center 1952 book called “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”  In 2020, the musical about a young window washer climbing the corporate ladder to Chairman of the Board might be as relevant as ever – and WWW takes on a whole new meaning.  The Alhambra Theatre and Dining will open its version of the Broadway multiple-award winning drama on February 20, 2020.

About the show & book: “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying: The Dastard's Guide to Fame and Fortune” is a humorous 1952 book by Shepherd Mead, inspired by Mead's corporate experiences at the Benton & Bowles advertising agency, which he joined in 1936 as a mail-room clerk, eventually working his way up to a vice-presidency.  During his journey up the corporate ladder, Mead wrote the book in his spare time—before work and on weekends.  The book was a best-seller.

J. Pierrepont Finch, a young man with large ambitions, works as a window washer of the World Wide Wicket Company.  Dreaming of a higher position in the company, he purchases a book that promises to guide him straight to the top of the corporate ladder (without putting forth too much effort). Power, sex, ambition, greed… It’s just another day at the office in this classic satire of big business.

The musical comedy, starred Robert Morse and Rudy Vallée when it opened at the 46th Street Theatre on Broadway in October 1961, running for 1,417 performances.  The show won seven Tony Awards, the New York Drama Critics Circle award, and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1967, a film based on the musical was released by United Artists, with Morse and Vallee re-creating their stage roles.

A 1995 revival was mounted at the same theatre as the original production (now named the Richard Rodgers Theatre).  It ran for 548 performances and starred Matthew Broderick and Megan Mullally.  A 50th-anniversary Broadway revival directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford and starring Daniel Radcliffe and John Larroquette opened on March 27, 2011, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and ran for 473 performances.  Larroquette and Broderick both took home Tony Awards for their respective portrayals of J. Pierrepont Finch.

Poking fun at life in the business world with themes still pertinent today, the show contains 20 witty and wonderful songs, such as “A Secretary is not a Toy,” “Grand Old Ivy,” an ode to the CEO’s college alma mater, & “Company Way,” a tongue in cheek look at corporate culture.

Said Managing Partner, Craig Smith, “We’ve wanted to do this show for a long time, and because it’s either been on tour or on Broadway, we haven’t been able to.  This is a funny show that whether you’ve spent your life in the corporate world or just been around it, you’ll just nod in agreement with the humor.”

‘Bandstand’ coming to The Times-Union Center for only eight shows

FSCJ Artist Series is proud to announce that the Tony Award®-winning Broadway musical, Bandstand, comes to Jacksonville’s Times-Union Center for only 6 days.  Originally directed and choreographed by three-time Tony winner and Hamilton choreographer, Andy Blankenbuehler, featuring music by Richard Oberacker with book and lyrics by Robert Taylor and Richard Oberacker.  This poignant and inspiring new American musical explodes with infectious music and high-octane, heart-stopping dancing.

It’s 1945. As America’s soldiers come home to ticker-tape parades and overjoyed families, Private First-Class Donny Novitski, singer and songwriter, struggles to rebuild the life he left behind.  When NBC announces a national competition to find the nation’s next great musical superstars, Donny sees a lifeline for himself and some fellow veterans that gives them the purpose they so desperately need.  Together, they form a band unlike any the nation has ever seen. Along the way, they discover the power of music to face the impossible, find their voice, and finally feel like they have a place to call home.

“Bandstand” is “both a peppy celebration of can-do spirit and a more somber exploration of what American servicemen experienced when they marched home from World War II.  It’s a great argument for why theater can sometimes tell a story more boldly and more viscerally”
(The New York Times).

The award-winning “Bandstand” design team includes: Tony Award nominee David Korins and associate Justin West (Scenic Design), Tony Award winner Paloma Young (Costume Design), Tony Award winner Jeff Croiter (Lighting Design), Tony Award winner Nevin Steinberg (Original Broadway Sound Design), David Thomas (Tour Sound Design), J. Jared Janas and Dave Bova (Makeup, Hair and Wig Design), Tony Award nominee Greg Anthony Rassen (Co- Orchestrator and Music Arranger), Tony Award winner and 2017 Tony Award nominee Bill Elliott (Co-Orchestrator), Fred Lassen (Music Supervisor), Gina Rattan (Tour Director), with choreography restaged and additional choreography by Marc Heitzman.  Tour Casting by Kate Lumpkin, CSA.

“Bandstand” is produced by Work Light Productions and was originally produced on Broadway by: Tom Smedes, Gabrielle Palitz, Terry Schnuck, Roger Horchow, Peter Stern, Michael Palitz, Jane Dubin, Tom Kirdahy, David Lyons, Sarah Perot, James L. Nederlander, James & Catherine Berges, Darren DeVerna & Jere Harris, Jeff & Ellen Adler, Nancy & Randy Best, Deep End Productions, Patty Baker, Terry D. Loftis/Scott D.
