Are we 'Conveniently' Using God?

Recently in our Small Group meeting we discussed “Covenant vs Contract”.  According to Deuteronomy 28, Last week we learned that the Bible is the book of Covenant.  This week we will learn the difference between covenant and contract. We tend to use these words almost interchangeably.  But that's very misleading when we try to compare our notion of “contract” with the biblical notion of "covenant".  The difference between the two words in the Bible is profound… so much so that we could almost say it's the difference between roommate (contract) and marriage (covenant).

Contracts involve promises, covenants involve oaths.  Were you aware that politicians used to swear on the Bible opened to Deuteronomy 28, where the blessings and curses are recorded?  The reason is because they were affirming to uphold the constitution or suffer the curses recorded in those pages.  This Bible passage was such a part of the political fabric of our country that George Washington took his oath with it for his First Inauguration on April 30, 1789.  Think about it, we still make doctors, police officers, military personnel and public officials swear oaths.  Why?  Because we depend on them; we put our lives in their hands and we want them to swear to God they'll do their jobs.  We don't just take their word for it; we want them to know that they'll have to answer to a higher authority, God! And guess what? God is the same one who cut a covenant, not a contract, with us to provide all those blessings in Deuteronomy 28. Receive them!!!  #ImpactChurchSmallGroup

A question arose from the lesson: “In your own words, explain the covenant between man and God.”
Our group response was: “Some Christians make a “Covenant of Convenience” with God.”

“Hmmmmm, very interesting.  This is absolutely so true.  We see this in many instances such as when people go to jail/prison, when their finances are low, when their health is bad, when they are dealing with family problems or generally at any times where their back is against the wall or they feel that now that they've tried everything else, they should "try God".  Like, "God if you get me out of this, I'll serve you for the rest of my life, etc."” – Small Group Leaders: Leo & Norma Davis.

Getting Godly Answers

Are we talking with God on a continual basis or just when we want something?

Proverbs 3:5-6Good News Translation (GNT)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.

It’s great to quote scriptures and do some things that the Bible tells us to do, but after we’ve done the Word, why not talk with Him.  It’s great to check to see if we’re on track, as we begin to get loving counsel from Holy Spirit.  He’s the third personage of the Blessed Trinity.  He’s our friend, comforter and confidant.

Don’t leave home without Him and when you talk with Him, be quick to hear & slow to speak and ready to take action.  Don’t just talk to God, but speak with Him.

The Gift

It wasn’t given to you on Christmas, because we don’t wait to express ourselves on just one day and besides that, it’s Jesus’ birthday and not yours.
It wasn’t given on Valentine’s Day because we love you all year long.
Blessings
It wasn’t given on St. Patrick’s Day, because we, as Christians, don’t believe in luck.
It wasn’t given on your birthday because we’re glad that God had a purpose just for you on that day—you were born, and that was special enough.
It was given because of the love that God instills in us to be obedient when He calls us to bestow blessings on someone, and to give that gift whenever He asks us to bless someone.

“Throw It to Jesus”

(March 24, 1997)
“Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you” (I Pet. 5:7).

Familiar scripture isn’t it? Well, I never thought about what the word “cast” meant. Cast means to throw—like casting a line and hook out across a body of water to catch a fish. You can’t just give the line to the body of water. You have to throw that hook and line (called casting) far out into the water. Sometimes we have to cast our faith out to God to show Him that we may be trusted to do His will.

One instance I was thinking about happened shortly after the Lord had blessed me with the retail store that I had desired. I had done everything I thought God had instructed me to do in obtaining the store and getting it started. So, when I thought that I was finished, I passed the ball back to the Lord (I envisioned being in a basketball game with God. I would get the ball, score a basket and then it was turned over to God for Him to do His thing). Well, I again visualized God passing the ball back to me, but I didn’t want the ball. I had already scored my point and thought I wouldn’t get the ball back until God scored His point. However, the ball kept finding its way back to my side of the court. (What I didn’t realize is that God was telling me that this was my game, played by my rules, and God was letting me finish the game without Him because it was not His plan!).

What did God want of me now? Customers were not beating a path to my doorstep, so - I had time on my hands, and, as a result, my prayer time was increased. I started on my second book, gathering thoughts from above (the first book wasn’t published yet). Bills were accumulating, yet they were being paid before the final “nasty-gram” arrived. My husband was supporting the business, working three jobs, and doing volunteer work. I hadn’t seen a paycheck since I left my last position. I wanted to pay my tithes (10% to God’s kingdom), and give more to those who were in need, but I wasn’t able to get blood from any turnip, and, in addition, I could hardly pay the rent for the building.

I didn’t want the ball! I almost didn’t want to play anymore…

Hear – Understand – Do

“I hear from God, but I don’t understand what He’s saying.” Why? Sometimes it’s not meant for us to understand at that particular time.

Know — knowledge. You must build knowledge through reading, research, or by asking questions. It just doesn’t happen overnight. You can pray for, and receive a Word of Knowledge, and it will come to you at an appointed time. Word of Knowledge is supernatural revelation, by the Holy Spirit, of certain facts from the mind of God. It is the God-given ability to receive from God, by revelation, the facts concerning something that is humanly impossible for us to know anything about. A “word” of knowledge is just a part of God's insight (omniscience) regarding a specific situation or incident.

When God gives us an assignment, it is our responsibility to GO and DO. If we don’t complete our assignment, then God will use another more willing vessel. When God said to, “Occupy until I come;” He meant… (to read the rest and more, order “Where Did That Come From?”)
