The Alhambra Dinner Theatre brings the Sound of Music to JAX

We all know the story, the songs and even the names of every character in this beloved Rogers & Hammerstein musical. The longest running dinner theater in the United States, The Alhambra Theatre & Dining will be opening “The Sound of Music” show on August 12, running through September 26. Fleet Landing is the sponsor for this family-oriented show, which is already almost sold out.

The Sound of Music story is based on Maria von Trapp's memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, published in 1949 to help promote her family's singing group following the death of her husband Georg in 1947 Hollywood producers expressed interest in purchasing the title only, but Maria refused, wanting her entire story to be told. In 1956, German producer Wolfgang Liebeneiner purchased the film rights for $9,000 (equivalent to $86,000 in 2020), hired George Hurdalek and Herbert Reinecker to write the screenplay, and Franz Grothe to supervise the soundtrack, which consisted of traditional Austrian folk songs. Z was released in West Germany on October 9, 1956 and became a major success.

In 1956, Paramount Pictures purchased the United States film rights, intending to produce an English-language version with Audrey Hepburn as Maria. The Sound of Music stage musical opened on November 16, 1959 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City and ran on Broadway for 1,443 performances, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. In June 1960, Twentieth Century Fox purchased the film adaptation rights to the stage musical for $1.25 million (equivalent to $10,900,000 in 2020) against ten percent of the gross. The film, which starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, was nominated for 10 Oscars and walked away with five, including Best Picture.

On the Menu: Executive Chef DeJuan Roy creates a new menu for every Alhambra show, usually borrowing influences from the script to shape his selections and recipes. Thanks to Chef Roy's culinary magic, the Alhambra is now known as much for its exceptional dining as for its theatrical productions. The menu for The Sound of Music features:

Musical ‘Smoke on the Mountain’ comes to the Alhambra Theatre

What the Alhambra audience and just about everyone needs right now is a reason to sing and laugh. So is the idea behind opening “Smoke on the Mountain”, and its long catalogue of gospel-feeling music sung by the cast as the fictional Sanders Family, an offbeat troupe of traveling singers.

“Smoke on the Mountain” tells the story of a Saturday Night Gospel Sing at a country church in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains in 1938. The show features two dozen rousing bluegrass songs played and sung by the Sanders Family, a traveling troupe making its return to performing after a five-year hiatus. The young and enthusiastic Pastor Oglethorpe of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church has enlisted the Sanders Family in his efforts to bring this tiny congregation into “the modern world.” Between songs, each family member “witnesses,” providing the story of the show.

Though they appear perfect in the eyes of the congregation who wants to be inspired by their songs, one thing after another goes awry and they reveal their true, hilariously imperfect selves. By the end of the evening, the Sanders Family endears themselves to the audience by revealing their weaknesses and allowing us to share in their triumphs.

The Alhambra will continue its 2021 season with limited seating due to its policy of strictly adhering to COVID-19 protocols. “Our role in this community is to provide entertainment and a respite for our family of guests,” said Smith. “We will always put their experience first, and this is what they told us they wanted.” With Season Partners having renewed at an even faster pace than for 2020 and hosting a sold-out season opener with Singin’ in the Rain, Smith feels reassured in the decisions he and his team made. “We’re delighted to make the seating work, and even more delighted that our guests are responding with such love and support.”

Safety at the Alhambra during COVID-19

It has literally been a month of Sundays since we’ve had a review on “Around Town with Ms. “V” due to the pandemic shutdown in March; nonetheless we thank God that we are alive and well.

Florida has only reached Stage 2 of carefully reopening some businesses with social distancing and having patrons don masks, yet we are proud to report that the “Alhambra Theatre and Dining” has complied to safely protect its patrons and their employees.

Masks are not required during your meal, but you are requested to mask-up when going to the restrooms.  Some people chose to have on their masks during the show’s presentation, but that’s entirely up to you.

Space between tables has been designed so that only you and people who are in your party, are sitting together.  Plexiglass is positioned throughout the showroom in order to separate one layer of tables from the next level of tables.  All servers are protecting you with their facial coverings and gloved hands.

Yes, you can still get your favorite alcoholic beverage brought to your table, and don’t forget to get your professional 5x7 framed photo taken with a themed background to commemorate your visit along with a memorable key chain.

The show “Grease” is fantastic.  When I asked if I should watch the original movie with my Granddaughter, it was suggested that I wait until after viewing the show, and she was so right (but it really didn’t matter).  A couple of the songs were different and of course, some of the scenes have been changed under the excellent production of Mr. Tod Booth.  The actors (some of whom you might have seen before), are seasoned participants as they act, sing and dance with the upmost precision.

The Alhambra Theatre and Dining is a small business that is doing everything that they can do tin order to maintain quality while presenting the best three course meals by Executive Chef DeJuan Roy.  Also, please be kid to your servers because they work hard to give quality service.  Tipping is allowed and recommended.  The only negative of my evening was the coffee that tasted like a weak tea, nevertheless, there’s still a Starbucks still open somewhere on the way home.

‘Love Letters’ communication at the Alhambra Theatre

This two-man play is a mature WIN at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining.  This play is excellent for anyone who remembers writing letters to someone dear, mailing them and waiting for a response to come back.  It wasn’t as simple as it is today - only being a keystroke away, but letters had meaning and it took thought and time to grab some paper & pen, and make a trip to the post office.  This presentation brings back fond memories.  Younger people might not “get it”, but the more mature audience will enjoy a reminder of times gone by.

Producer (and usually Director) Tod Booth* (Andrew Makepeace Ladd III) and Booth’s real-life-actress wife Lisa Valini* (Melissa Gardner), give much meaning to this presentation through their flawless reading, and heartfelt facial expressions.  Lisa’s jewelry and both their outfits are grand and add enjoyment for the eyes while listening to their extensive dialogue.

There is no music nor dancing, but most people could not read for two hours and express the love that a couple of characters held for each other that spanned a number of decades.  Imagine taking a journey of two young people through many years of school, graduation, jobs, love affairs, military commitment, growing families, life’s entanglements, and finally death.  That’s what “Love Letters” is all about.  It’s a mind game of an exciting journey.

Making her Directing debut, Jessica Booth* who did a wonderful job, behind the scenes at bossing her parents around the stage.  Take a look at some funny outtakes from her preopening experience.

As noted in the Playbill’s Author's Note: This is a play, or rather a sort of play, that is designed to be read aloud by an actor and actress sitting at tables, in front of a group of people, with no special set or memorization.  In performance, the piece would seem to work best if the actors didn’t look at each other until the end.  They listen eagerly and actively to each other along the way, as we might listen to an urgent voice on a one-way radio, coming from far, far away.

Chef DeJuan has not disappointed, especially with his famous Roasted Prime Rib.  This writer is not a fan of lobster, so the Monk Fish was not a favorite (don’t google it before you try it - the fish is hideous looking).  Both the first course selections are delicious, but the salad’s dressing tasted and looked like thousand islands.  Still it was tasty.  The Broccoli & Cheddar Soup is well seasoned and (as with most of Chef’s meals) did not require additional condiments.  For dessert, both the Carrot Cake and the Warm Pear Cobbler are hits.  Bon Appetite and enjoy the Show!

Alhambra’s first show of the New Year - ‘Love Letters’

Having grown up in the Alhambra Theatre, Jessica Booth has played in just about every role from a child performer in Christmas Carole to leading lady as Jovi in Elf…the Musical.  Now she takes on an entirely new role as Director of the acclaimed Broadway hit, “Love Letters”.  To make it just a little more challenging (or perhaps interesting), Ms. Booth will be directing her parents, Lisa Valdini-Booth and Tod Booth.  Mrs. Booth has been in more than 200 Alhambra performances and was once knowing widely as the “voice of Winn-Dixie Supermarkets,” and Mr. Booth is the Alhambra’s former owner and current Creative Director, himself having directed more than 200 shows at the iconic theater.

A play by A. R. Gurney, “Love Letters” was a finalist in 1988 for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.  The play centers on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, who sit side by side at tables and read the notes, letters and cards – in which over nearly 50 years, they discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats – that have passed between them throughout their separated lives.

Since its debut on Broadway in 1988, “Love Letters” has been performed by a who’s who of celebrities including: Carol Burnett with Brian Dennehy, Mel Gibson with Sissy Spacek, Robert Wagner with wife Stefanie Powers, Larry Hagman and Dallas co-star Linda Gray and in 2006 with I Dream of Jeannie co-star and Alhambra alumna Barbara Eden.  In 2013 Ali McGraw performed beside Love Story co-star Ryan O’Neal and in 2016, Tom Hanks performed with wife, Rita Wilson.  Even Elizabeth Taylor took a turn, with James Earl Jones in 2007.

Said Managing Partner, Craig Smith, “Amazingly, the Alhambra has never shown Love Letters, and it’s only appropriate that we do so with our very own stars, Lisa and Tod.”  Smith noted, commenting that the Alhambra is really in the business of creating memories, “Having Jessica direct her parents in her leadership debut is really monumental for the Alhambra family and for the Booth family.  That girl was pretty much raised under this roof.  Not many families get to celebrate such moments.”

Said actor-turned director Jessica Booth, laughing, “This experience could be really fun or really vengeful, or perhaps a little bit of both, depending on your point of view.”  She went on, “I really think directing my parents will be a great way to get feedback on my first directing opportunity. I’ve seen both of them work on stage and behind it, and I know I’ve learned from the best.  The bar is quite high, and I also know they won’t at all sugar-coat their feedback.  Why start now, right?”

Children’s theater introduction from the Alhambra

Frequently throughout the year, the Alhambra hosts plays during the day.  Whether to interest our youth in acting, expose them to live theater, or to fit in with a school curriculum, the goal of the Alhambra Theatre & Dining is to introduce young people to the magic and glory of the stage.  Join the tradition and bring your children to the theater!

Recommended for children ages Pre-K – 5th Grade, their unique and interactive rendition of Hans Christian Anderson's “Hansel & Gretel” was written by Tod Booth, exclusively for the Alhambra.  This show is perfect for field trips or family outings!  The entire performance is just 45 minutes and the kids are invited to bring their own bag lunch.

‘Jekyll & Hyde The Musical’ is just what the doctor ordered

If you like/liked the intrigue of stories like “Dr. Frankenstein” or Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”, “Psycho” or “Vertigo”, then you need to take time and make your reservation right now for “Jekyll & Hyde the Musical” at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining, in Jacksonville, FL.  The acting, singing and dancing are marvelous throughout the show.

Justin Murphy, who has not performed at the Alhambra since 2008, does quite well in playing the dual-lead roles of Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde.  Murphy last performed at the Alhambra as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar (See center photo in collage).

Also returning are Gary Marachek* as Gabriel John Utterson (Marachek last appeared in the Christmas Carole as Ebenezer Scrooge),  Kenneth Uibel as General Lord Glossop (audiences will remember Uibel for his long-time portrayal of the ghost in the Alhambra’s Christmas Carole).  Jessica Booth as Lucy Harris has been in numerous presentations at the Alhambra and we watched her blossom into the national performer that she has become.  Her Mom (Lisa Valdini*) & Alhambra producer/director (Tod Booth*) are very proud of their daughter.

Also in the lineup’s main characters, whom you’ve seen in previous Alhambra shows are: Kurt McCall* (Sir Danvers Carew), David Diehl (Simon Stride), Patti Eyler* (Lady Beaconsfield), Alec Hadden (The Bishop of Basingstoke), Andrew LeJeune (Lord Savage), Melvin Nash (Sir Archibald Proops) and Traci Bair* as Emma Carew.  What a marvelous performance and kudos to these capable actors.

Lee Hamby, Katie Nettle*, Cat Brindisi*, Leland Pettis, Carley Levy and Erin Leigh Knowles are six performers who sing and dance the night away in this English Operatic musical; thanks to musical direction of Cathy Murphy Giddens, and stage manager/choreographer - Shain Stroff*.

From the dining room: The Executive Chef Dejuan Roy’s menu is simply superb.  Even though Chef Dejuan is on vacation, he made sure that his selections were created to the letter.  The following are selections that were sampled by this writer and my tablemates.  You will be delighted with any of these choices. First Course – Pumpkin Bisque with crème fraiche and toasted pumpkin seeds; or a Kale Salad with roasted fall vegetables {The soup is delightfully warm in temperature and not chilled.  If you like kale, then you will enjoy the salad}.  Second Course features a choice of Braised Pork Shank with polenta and pole beans {This is a large portion of meat as you would enjoy from an osso bucco shank.  It is flavorful and very delicious}; Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya {a little spicy, yet scrumptious}; house-baked Toffee Chocolate Cream Pie {melts in your mouth}.

‘Jekyll & Hyde The Musical’ in town for Halloween

What was the longest-running show ever at Broadway’s Plymouth Theatre?  The answer - “Jekyll & Hyde the Musical”, which opens at the iconic Alhambra Theatre & Dining on Wednesday, October 23, 2019.  Some Alhambra veterans will be returning for the musical-horror-drama based on Robert Louis Stevenson novella, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.  Justin Murphy, who has not performed at the Alhambra in more than 10 years, will be playing the dual-lead roles of Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde.  Murphy last performed at the Alhambra as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar.  Murphy left the on-stage life to produce films such as Dawgtown and to teach at Florida School of the Arts as an animation professor.

Also returning are Gary Marachek as Gabriel John Utterson, Kenneth Uibel as General Lord Glossop and Jessica Booth as Lucy Harris.  Booth is returning from her travels singing on the AIDA Cruise Lines and can be seen in a recent episode of the TV show, Primal Instinct.  Audiences will remember Uibel for his long-time portrayal of the ghost in the Alhambra’s Christmas Carole.  Marachek last appeared in the Christmas Carole as Ebenezer Scrooge.  Lee Hamby will be marking his 39th production at the Alhambra.  He is also the founder of Jacksonville’s The 5 & Dime Theater.

About the Show: "Jekyll & Hyde" is a tale of two men – one, a doctor, passionate and romantic; the other, a terrifying madman – and two women – one, beautiful and trusting; the other, beautiful and trusting only herself.  Both women are in love with the same man, and both are unaware of his dark secret.  While trying to find a cure for his father’s mental illness, Dr. Jekyll makes himself the subject of his experimental treatments and accidentally unleashes his dark side.  This musical brings to life the epic struggle about the nature of man.

Originally conceived for the stage by Frank Wildhorn and Steve Cuden, it features music by Frank Wildhorn, a book by Leslie Bricusse and lyrics by Wildhorn, Bricusse and Cuden.  After a world premiere run in Houston, Texas, the musical embarked on a national tour of the United States prior to its Broadway debut in 1997.

Many international productions in various languages have since been staged including two subsequent North American tours, two tours in the United Kingdom, a concert version, a re-vamped US tour in 2012 ahead of a 2013 Broadway revival and an Australian concert version in 2019.  Baywatch actor David Hasselhoff took over the lead on October 17, 2000 until the production closed.  The musical played an almost-four-year run and became the longest-running show in the history of the Plymouth Theatre, closing after 1,543 regular performances on January 7, 2001.

Said lead actor Justin Murphy, “I haven’t acted in a significant production since my last performance at the Alhambra more than a decade ago, and now I get to play two roles at the same time.  I can’t wait.”  Added Alhambra Managing Partner Craig Smith, “With the sellout success we have had in the past two or three seasons producing timely shows like the Addams Family, we felt like Jekyll & Hyde fit right in.  Maybe it will be start of another Alhambra “holiday” tradition!”

For the foodies, Executive Chef Dejuan Roy has developed a menu that is anything but scary, including: First Course – Pumpkin Bisque with crème fraiche and toasted pumpkin seeds; or a Kale Salad with roasted fall vegetables.  Second Course features a choice of Braised Pork Shank with polenta and pole beans; Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya; Sweet Tea Poached Salmon and Shrimp; or a Vegan Italian “Sausage” & White Bean Farro Chili with homemade cornbread.  For Dessert, Alhambra guests can choose from house-baked Toffee Chocolate Cream Pie, or Pumpkin Crumble Souffle.

Alhambra announces its 2020 schedule

The iconic Alhambra Theatre & Dining will open its 52nd season on January 9, 2020 with a four-week run of the Broadway hit, Love Letters. The Alhambra announced its 2020 season line up in early September to its current season subscribers, what the Alhambra refers to as “Season Partners”.  There are more than 4,000 such fans of the Alhambra and the 2020 release marked a new record for renewals.  Beginning Tuesday, September 30, 2019, the proverbial “ticket windows” will open to the general public, giving access to Season Partnerships and single-show purchasing.

The 2020 season features seven musicals, a dramatic love story (“Love Letters”) and a comedy.  The lineup will include recognizable titles like: “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Grease,” and “Footloose,” based on the hit-movie with Kevin Bacon and John Lithgow as well as a return engagement of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella,” last shown at the Alhambra in 2010.  Concluding the year will be Broadway classic, “The Music Man” then the comedy “Love, Sex and the IRS” and the musical rendition of “A Wonderful Life,” a version new to the Alhambra.

In a letter to current Season Partners, Craig Smith, Managing Partner, thanked the Alhambra’s supporters for their continued love of the Theater’s unique brand of entertainment, mixing an award-winning culinary experience with a Broadway-quality show, all in a high-value package for about $50 per person.  Smith reminded the Alhambra’s most loyal fans that, “We truly look at you as partners in this journey, many who have been loyal to the Alhambra for more than 25 years.  Your continued commitment allows us to support organizations like the Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office, Child Cancer Fund, Rotaract Club, Wolfson Children’s Hospital, the USO of Greater Jacksonville and the countless other charities we support. You also allow the Alhambra to enrich the cultural fabric of our city in so many other ways.”

Season Partnerships start at just $299 for a six-show package.  Partnerships include a substantial savings on the single-show pricing and also allow guests to book desired seats long in advance.  Season Partners also receive first notice on the Alhambra’s many other events, including its popular Alhambra After Dark music series and perennially sold-out New Year’s Eve Gala.  Single-show tickets will be available for purchase beginning October on the Alhambra’s website, at the box office or by phone.  Season Partnerships are available by phone or at the box office.

Alhambra’s ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’ is phenomenal

Neil Simon's Tony Award winning play, “Brighton Beach Memoirs” is a MUST-SEE play at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining.  The cast consists of only 7 people, yet the dialogue is immense and none of the actors missed a beat (at least they never appeared to miss a line, and that is a representation of true acting).  This reviewer has never seen this play before, and it kept me laughing and interested throughout the entire performance.

As said previously, there is a lot of dialogue and allow me to give some credit to whom credit is due.  I can’t brag enough on a young veteran actor who is only a sophomore at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and is also a member of the Actors Equity Association.  Evan Gray* portrays (Eugene Jerome and is also the Narrator for portions of the play).  Evan has been in four previous shows at the Alhambra and you don’t want to miss him in this one.  There has to be a love of the theater for this young man to do homework, go to school each day, accomplish his chores and be on stage Tuesday thru Sunday nights and matinees on the weekend.

You may have seen Hillary Hickam* (Kate Jerome) onscreen and yes, she plays a huge part along with Stacey Harris* (Blanche Morton) who has graced the stage of the Alhambra in “The Addams Family”.  Both ladies portray sisters who grow together in a blended household with the ups and downs associated with overcrowding in a one-family home.

Emma Decker (Laurie Morton) & Kelly Wolfe (Nora Morton) are newbies to the Alhambra, nonetheless, we may see these ladies in upcoming shows.  They both have an interest in acting and both are pursuing the acting bug.

Cameron Hale Elliott* (Stanley Jerome) was recently in Alhambra’s “Mamma Mia!” and he meshes well with younger brother Evan Gray, as the older brother who gives advice and has a surprise for the audience toward the end of the show.

Veteran actor Robert Herrle* (Jack Jerome) is the patriarch of the Jerome family as this marks his fourth show with the Alhambra. Herrle is more noted around his home in Orlando, Florida; yet you might have been privileged to see him working on stage with Disney Cruise Lines.

If plays are your choice of entertainment over musicals, then you’ll want to get you tickets NOW for a seat in the audience, while Neil Simon’s “Brighton Beach” is still on stage at the Alhambra.

RECOMENDATIONS OF THE MENU:
First Course Old-Fashioned Chicken Noodle Soup, OR Home Run Salad with chopped romaine, tomatoes, cucumbers, boiled eggs, green onions, green peppers, carrots, raisins, sliced almonds, Green Goddess dressing *GF*.  Both were good.  If you don’t like a lot of salad dressing, request your dressing on the side.
Second Course (Choice of One) Pierogi Shepherd’s Pie with ground beef and mixed vegetables and rich gravy, fluffy potatoes and cheese pierogies, OR Chicken & Waffles - with cardamom syrup and strawberry butter & Fruit with Poppy Seed Dressing.  As always, Chef DeJuan’s Fried Chicken is Da BOMB and the waffles have a sweet taste that didn’t require any additional syrup. 
Third Course (Choice of One) Lemon Chiffon Cake OR Boston Cream Pie  Both desserts were scrumptious and the portions are just enough to enjoy with coffee or tea.

Mamma Mia! is almost a total ‘sell-out’ at the Alhambra!

The show Mamma Mia! hasn’t been in Jacksonville, Florida since 2013 and this presentation, at the Alhambra Theatre, is by far the best that any town could render.  The highlight of the show is the wonderful harmony and dancing from the entire Ensemble.  A standing ovation goes out to Rodney Holmes*, Victoria Elizabeth, Taylor Hilt Mitchell*, Kaléa Leverette, Mitchell Burnes, Hailey Hendrickson & Sam Brown, under the experienced direction of Choreographer, Shain Stroff*; Musical Director, Cathy Murphy Giddens and Producer/Director, Tod Booth*.

If you are an avid theatergoer, you would know the excitement that the song “Memory” (from the musical CATS), sung by Grizabella the cat, brings to an audience.  Well, there is the same thrill from the Alhambra stage when Kelly Atkins* (who portrays Donna Sheridan) belts out the song, “The Winner Takes It All” - drop the mike!  That’s all that needs to be said.  You’ve got to be there and hear it for yourself.

The other two mature lead females: Lisa Valdini* (Rosie) and Karen Coughlin (Tanya) have some great moves on the dance floor.  Lisa and Jim Ballard take the stage and show off when they preform “Take a Chance on Me”.  There is so much comedy between these two actors during this particular number in the second act.

I don’t recall seeing the three male lead actors donning such bright disco apparel in other productions of Mamma Mia! but these guys have the moves to go along with the colorful costumes.  Kudos go out to seasoned actors Jim Sorenson* (Sam), Jim Ballard* (Bill) and Billy Clark Taylor* (Harry).

All the Mamma Mia! songs are enjoyed by the crowd, who naturally sings along with the music of ABBA.  Gala Night was almost sold-out, with only a few seats available; so, you may want to check the Alhambra links below and see if there have been any cancellations for this marvelous show.

‘Disney’s The Little Mermaid’ splashes into the Alhambra

Since report cards have been available for your viewing pleasure, it’s time to reward your little scholars with dinner and a terrific musical presentation (“Disney’s The Little Mermaid”, presented by Snyder Heating & Airconditioning), at the historic Alhambra Theatre & Dining.  The singing is outstanding, the dancing is right on time, the costumes are soooooo colorful, and the spoken lines are wonderful!

The entire cast, chosen by Director/Producer Tod Booth*, is magnificent in their glowing, glamorous, colorful costumes.  As said earlier, the vocals stand out especially ‘Ariel’ portrayed by Grace Gibbons* actual performer at Walt Disney World.  Her voice and underwater mannerisms are very close to the Disney Movies’ character that we know and love.

Some other performers who have stood out to this reviewer are: Grimsby - Timothy Ellis*, Flounder - Evan Gray*, the incomparable Sebastian - Rendell Anthony DeBose, and the entire Ensemble (some of whom play multiple roles).

Ever since this writer started covering entertainment at this venue, back in 2010, there have been many memorable shows that the Alhambra  Theatre & Dining’s set designer, Ivan Black, has excelled in creating.  Besides “Disney’s the Little Mermaid” being among some of the classic Set Creations that have graced the Alhambra stage others have been: “Phantom,” Little Shop of Horrors,” “BIG” “Shrek the Musical,” “Seussical the Musical,” The Wiz,” Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” & “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”  These are just a few of the many other (try to name a few others that you feel have exceeded your expectations).  Most of these productions can be found in the “50 Years of Memories” sold in the Alhambra foyer.  Many accolades go out to the entire Production Staff for a job “well-done”.

The Watermelon & Tomato Salad, Shrimp and Leek Gratin & Ariel’s Strawberry Cupcake are my top winners.

‘Big’ shows up and shows out at the Alhambra

Why don’t you experience how BIG that this “BIG the musical” can be at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining, while tickets are still available?  They say that children and animals can steal a show, well, the critics are correct.  The young people in the ensemble and the youngsters who play Billy and Josh, in the Alhambra production, steal the show and our hearts with their songs, dancing and memory of all their lines.

Allow me to focus on the character of Billy played by Jon Ashton Reid.  Jon had some great harmony with Young Josh (Ari Walz) when they sang “You’re a Big Boy Now”.  Jon is the son of Dr. Carolyn and Mr. Gerald Reid, and young Jon attends Jacksonville Country Day School where he hones his musical talents.  Ari had two songs by himself (“I Want To Go Home & Big”) that he phenomenally sang.

The entire adult Ensemble stepped-it-up in the production, and carried great tunes from the direction of choreographer Parker Slaybaugh* and the musical direction of Cathy Murphy.  The adults hold their own with upbeat songs throughout the presentation especially “MacMillan Toys” and “Coffee, Black”.  Well done troupe!!!

As in years past, the Alhambra Theatre & Dining has been an excellent venue for Birthdays, Anniversaries and for Prom celebrations.  Where else can you get dinner, a great show, a chance to get dressed up and have a great memorable evening all at one event?  Well, Valdosta Open Bible Christian School once again chose the Alhambra to have their “2019 senior prom”.  Take a look at the fun that the school had a few years ago when that group attended another play, for their 2017 prom.

Even if you’ve never seen the motion picture, you will appreciate the storyline that producer/director Tod Booth* has done with the local run of “BIG, the musical” in JAX.  The meal, as always, is fabulous.  If you like Corned Beef, then you’ll enjoy the Brown Sugar-Crusted Corned Beef dinner created by Executive Chef DeJuan Roy.  This writer chose Aunt Mae’s Fried Chicken and was not disappointed - very crisp & tasty.  The Potato & Bacon Chowder was the best and the Spring Salad was top notch.  The Banana Cream pie was a winner for the finale of my meal.  You cannot go wrong with any selection, and you will be full when you leave.
