The Alhambra Theatre and Dining safeguarding the community

(Updated: March 17, 2020)

Consistent with the most recent recommendations by the CDC and Governor Ron Desantis, The Alhambra Theatre & Dining is cancelling its performances through April 26, including the remaining week of its current show, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” and its upcoming performances of “Singin’ in the Rain.”  For those who purchased tickets to these shows, The Alhambra will offer a house credit toward a future show.

Said Alhambra Managing Partner Craig Smith, “As we approach the rest of our lineup, we will make our decision of when to re-open based, again, on the suggestions of our health and governmental leadership.  In the meantime, we are also trying to protect the financial health of our staff, most of whom rely on hourly wages and tips as their income.  We recognize that live theater plays a role in the community as a means to escape and relax, so if we can be open, we want to provide that respite for our customers.  In no way will we consider re-opening if it is recommended not to do so.”  The Alhambra will continue to post updates on social media and to its audience as things change.

Alhambra announces its 2020 schedule

The iconic Alhambra Theatre & Dining will open its 52nd season on January 9, 2020 with a four-week run of the Broadway hit, Love Letters. The Alhambra announced its 2020 season line up in early September to its current season subscribers, what the Alhambra refers to as “Season Partners”.  There are more than 4,000 such fans of the Alhambra and the 2020 release marked a new record for renewals.  Beginning Tuesday, September 30, 2019, the proverbial “ticket windows” will open to the general public, giving access to Season Partnerships and single-show purchasing.

The 2020 season features seven musicals, a dramatic love story (“Love Letters”) and a comedy.  The lineup will include recognizable titles like: “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Grease,” and “Footloose,” based on the hit-movie with Kevin Bacon and John Lithgow as well as a return engagement of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella,” last shown at the Alhambra in 2010.  Concluding the year will be Broadway classic, “The Music Man” then the comedy “Love, Sex and the IRS” and the musical rendition of “A Wonderful Life,” a version new to the Alhambra.

In a letter to current Season Partners, Craig Smith, Managing Partner, thanked the Alhambra’s supporters for their continued love of the Theater’s unique brand of entertainment, mixing an award-winning culinary experience with a Broadway-quality show, all in a high-value package for about $50 per person.  Smith reminded the Alhambra’s most loyal fans that, “We truly look at you as partners in this journey, many who have been loyal to the Alhambra for more than 25 years.  Your continued commitment allows us to support organizations like the Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office, Child Cancer Fund, Rotaract Club, Wolfson Children’s Hospital, the USO of Greater Jacksonville and the countless other charities we support. You also allow the Alhambra to enrich the cultural fabric of our city in so many other ways.”

Season Partnerships start at just $299 for a six-show package.  Partnerships include a substantial savings on the single-show pricing and also allow guests to book desired seats long in advance.  Season Partners also receive first notice on the Alhambra’s many other events, including its popular Alhambra After Dark music series and perennially sold-out New Year’s Eve Gala.  Single-show tickets will be available for purchase beginning October on the Alhambra’s website, at the box office or by phone.  Season Partnerships are available by phone or at the box office.

Rainere Hale Martin
’s God-given musical talent manifested itself at an early age, but today, Donna Summer tribute artist Rainere Martin (often known simply as Rainere), takes her talent all around the country entertaining and winning the love of audiences from coast to coast.

Following a standing ovation performance on the national television show ‘Showtime at the Apollo’, Rainere realized the musical pulse of the 70s and her passion for honoring its iconic disco singer, Donna Summer, was the niche she had been searching for.  She went to work developing her tribute performance and presented it before audiences of all sizes.  The sounds of funk, soul and pop are infused in each of Rainere’s performances.

Rainere is one of the most talented musical impersonators/tribute artist on tour today.  Her debut performance with Legends in Concert at Bakers Atlantic City dazzled the audience.  She has graced the stage at the Tropicana in Atlantic City and BB King’s in New York.  Rainere has perfected her ability to entertain crowds with the classic disco sounds of the ’70s.

Jourdan Carroll is just one of those singers that you never want to forget.  Walking away from his soulful voice at the end of a show gives you hope and admiration of his talent.  Known to some of his friends and fans as Big Daddy Boo Bear, Jourdan Carroll has worked his entire life on his voice as he practiced daily on his vocal range for years before he finally mastered his iconic sound.  His voice is so deep and mesmerizing it is often associated with the voice of the legendary Barry White.  After being noted so many times of his resemblance to Mr. White, he decided to bring the 70’s soul star back to life.

Beside Barry White, he is also a tribute artist of Luther Vandross, Isaac Hayes, Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, Freddy Jackson and Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire.  Jourdan Carroll and his enthralling stage presence will be something to see for years to come.  The performances are known throughout the nation and are slowly making their way to international ears.  Along with his musical talents, Jourdan Carroll is also a fashion designer and has developed a line of contemporary male clothing.

Alhambra Theatre 50th anniversary party kicks-off

It’s going to be a BIG celebration coming to the Alhambra Theatre & Dining this month and there are a few tickets still available so you can be there to party with the best-of-the-best.  The Alhambra Theatre & Dining stands proudly as one of just a handful or remaining dinner theaters dotting North America.  After half a century, the Alhambra is as vibrant as ever with new owners, led by Managing Partner, Craig Smith, are excited to announce its culminating event, the “50th Birthday Bash”, set for Monday, December 11 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Alhambra Theatre.

In the summer of 1967, a press photo was taken of a single table on an empty lot on Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville, Florida, an unlikely spot 50 years ago for a theater that would become an icon in the Jacksonville cultural landscape and within the national theater scene.  Set for two, that single table was covered by an elegant lace cloth, and adorned with matching napkins, silverware, stylish china plates and coffee cups and tall crystal glasses. In the middle of the small table stood an equally elegant candelabra holding five candles. What better way for the young gentlemen sitting there, Ted Johnson and George Ballis, to demonstrate their vision of the future.  Just a few months later, in December of 1967, the Alhambra opened its doors to the public as a place where guests came for a “night on the town,” adorned in gowns, tuxedoes and their best shoes.

Expected to be on-hand will be the Current and Former Owners; Jacksonville’s Mayor Lenny Curry; members of Jacksonville’s City Council including: Al Ferraro, Scott Wilson, Reggie Gaffney, Danny Becton and Jim Love; State Representative Tracie Davis; US Senator Bill Nelson; Matthew Davis of Senator Marco Rubio’s office, Alhambra’s Legacy Servers, long-standing season subscribers and some special guests who have milestones that began in 1967 (such as first dates or engagements), and other VIP’s.

Opened in 1967 as The Alhambra Dinner Theater, this establishment is the longest-running dinner theater in the country.  The Alhambra has hosted legends such as: Tony Curtis, Claude Aiken, Sid Cesar and Cesar Romero, and, recently the likes of Loretta Swit, Barry Williams, Morgan Fairchild, Dawn Wells, Jamie Farr, Sally Struthers, Joyce DeWitt, Michael Learned, Barbara Eden, Lisa Whelchel and Mike Farrell.  The Alhambra was the place of Betty Grable’s final acting role, and is featured in her biography.  The Alhambra is also home to former Miss America, Orange Park (FL) native Leanza Cornett, who started at the Alhambra when she was only 15 years old.

Managing Partner, Craig Smith
In November 2009 the Alhambra was purchased by Theatre Partners, LLC; headed by Jacksonville’s AlhaManmbra entrepreneur, Craig Smith, as a way to give back to Jacksonville and preserve what he believes is one of its cultural jewels.

Craig is quoted as saying, “For fifty years The Alhambra has been a place of Broadway quality shows and fine meals, but the Alhambra really is more of a place where people make memories.  This theater is where we go to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries; it is where people came for the prom; it is the place of first dates and marriage proposals.  Recently, the Alhambra has even been a place where people get married.”

Today, the Alhambra boasts a run-rate of 80-90% capacity, including several completely sold out shows in recent years (including Alhambra After Dark shows) with the help from its Season Partners subscriber base of nearly 5,000.  The theater also employs more than 70 full-time staff, and donates tens of thousands of dollars and tickets annually to area charities.

“Our job isn’t just to sell seats to a great show, it’s to be part of this community and supportive of things that are meaningful to our guests,” said Smith.  “We can only take credit for putting a good product together.  I give all the credit to the Jacksonville community for rallying around this old girl and putting her back on the map.  It’s a journey that isn’t finished, but we’re off to a good start…that’s more than 50 years in the making.”
He added, “To me, when I walk through this theater, I can almost hear the voices of the memories.  Some say The Alhambra is haunted and those are the voices of the ghosts, but I say she just shares a lot of stories - and a lot of joy!”

Donna Summer and Barry White pack-out the Alhambra

Talk about Dancing in the Streets, if you want to get-down with some great romantic tunes and some terrific disco-mixes, you better hurry to the final Alhambra After Dark “The Donna Summer & Barry White Experience” shows.  This performance in JAX is highlighted by the talented lookalike and soundalike persona of Barry White, by tribute artist Jourdan Carrol (Lovingly called, “Big Daddy Boo Bear”), and the gorgeous onstage personality of Donna Summer mimicked by tribute star Rainere Martin.

Jourdan charmed the ladies with his suave baritone voice and his handsome demeanor of the famous singer Barry White.  The man gave away two dozen roses to unsuspecting recipients as he strolled throughout the theatre serenading ladies, giving them a rose and shaking their hands.  What a treat!  You may recall the songs that he sang before intermission: “Love’s Theme; You're The First, The Last, My Everything; Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up, Your Sweetness Is My Weakness, Playing Your Game, Baby, Oh What a Night for Dancing, Sho You Right, What Am I Gonna Do with You, Let the Music Play, I'm Qualified to Satisfy You, Practice What You Preach & ending his set with Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe.”  The man can sing!

After intermission the participants wanted more and they got the desires of their hearts through the rhythmic singing and gyrations of the beautiful Rainere Martin (Donna Summer) appearing in a lovely form-fitting sequin gown and stiletto heels.  This lady got up close and personal as she meandered through the Alhambra performing familiar tunes as: “On the Radio, Bad Girls, Hot Stuff, Dim All the Lights, MacArthur Park, I Love You, Heaven Knows, She Works Hard for the Money, Could It Be Magic & Last Dance”.  Both she and Jourdan ended the evening with their rendition of “Heaven Knows”.  Oh, what a night of talent!

Each performer made themselves available at the end of the night for pictures with their guests.  If you want to be whisked-back to the seventies, you still have a little time to get tickets and be prepared for the time of your life.  Also check out what’s in store from Executive Chef DeJuan Roy HERE.  OBTW, the Braised Beef Short Ribs have great taste and fall apart with the touch of a fork.  As always, look forward to the house-made rolls and flavorful desserts.

‘Reba-Willie & The Boys’ show off America at the Alhambra

If you close your eyes and just listen to the artist on stage, and you hear the performer sing with the exact same influx and mannerisms that the actual concert star has; then you are at a terrific tribute artist/impersonator show.  This is what is happening at the Alhambra Theater and Dining in JAX, FL.  Corrie Sachs IS “Reba McEntire” and “Roger HegyiIS the spitting image of the famous Willie Nelson.  Willie, Reba & The Boys are another great show that the “Alhambra After Dark” has produced and there will be more to come.  Stay tuned!

To add to the show, Roger and his band (Johnny Higgins (Keyboards), David Terry (Drums), Cliff Saunders (Bass Guitar) and a great sounding Julio Iglesias and Mike Fleetwood (Guitar), all sing and play with Willie and Reba as only a professional band could do.  Their music is top notched.  As an added attraction Roger and his band pay tribute to the legendary music of Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and the famous Johnny Cash.

Even if you might not appreciate country music, your feet will tap, your head will bob as you try to clap on the upbeat, instead of the downbeat.  To round out the group, local St. Augustine, FL. native, Debra Hammons Bailey Rider, adds her vocal talents along with Corrie and the Boys.

Take a look at the songs that the group sings in their entirety: “Can’t Even Get the Blues, Take it Back, Fancy, Little Rock, I’m a Survivor, Love Will Find Its Way, Rocky Top, Somebody Turn On the Radio, Lights Went Out in Georgia, We’re So Good Together, Does He Love You, Why Haven’t I Heard From You?”  *Intermission*  “Whiskey River, Stay All Night, Always on My Mind, City of New Orleans, Night Life, Crazy, Pancho and Lefty, On the Road Again, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up, Good Hearted Woman, Uncloudy Day, To All the Girls, Don’t Get Around Much, Georgia, Gotta Get Drunk, Beer for My Horses and God Bless the USA”.

Musical group 'Ambrosia' will be in JAX for 1 night

In their continued effort to maximize intimate settings, offer exciting entertainment to their guests, and celebrate their 50th Anniversary season, the Alhambra Theatre & Dining is hosting the popular 70’s rock band, “Ambrosia”.  With its roots in the California rock scene, Ambrosia had five hit singles which included: “Biggest Part of Me,” “You're the only Woman” and “How Much I Feel,” each of which were nominated for Grammy® Awards.

Back in the year 1970, four young musicians from the South Bay of Los Angeles, came together to create a new invigorating style of music.  Exploring the possibilities of progressive, classical and world influences, yet rooted with the soul of the blues and R&B, Joseph Puerta, Christopher North, David Pack and Burleigh Drummond created a new sound that was defined and recognized as “Ambrosia.”

Originally labeled as America’s answer to the progressive invasion of such English acts as “Yes” and “King Crimson,” the group quickly proved it was much more as its albums painted aural landscapes covering the gamut of musical styles and attracting the collaboration of such cultural icons as, Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Alan Parsons.

In its brief recording history, “Ambrosia” garnered five Grammy® nominations, five hit singles, heavy FM airplay and the admiration and respect of the musical community.  All this was in addition to sold out concerts around the world.  Today, the band is more alive and compelling than ever.  With three of the original members plus the addition of guitar ace Doug Jackson on electric guitar and backing vocals, Mary Harris contributing amazing keyboards and vocals, and the powerful and contemporary lead vocals and acoustic guitar of Ken Stacey, Ambrosia is exploring new musical territory and continuing to impress life-long fans and new converts alike.
