2014 MDA challenge for Jerry’s kids associated with ALS

Since the MDA Show of Strength Telethon is approaching (Sunday, August 31, 2014 on ABC), this columnist has a challenge for you.  It’s called, “The MDA/ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with a Twist”.  Take a look at Ms. “V”s video, and see if you are willing to accept yet another #IceBucketChallenge that will pay off in dividends.

So many people are doing the #ALSIceBucketChallenge and don’t know why they’re doing it or what it’s all about.  Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig Disease is a degenerative ailment that affects the patient’s nerves and muscles while rendering them in a state of paralysis.  A few years after the diagnosis, the person usually dies from the disease.

On the sixth of August, 2014, Pete Frates started a movement that has gone viral and is spreading awareness of the disease.  He put out a challenge, to those on social media, to spread the word concerning ALS.  The videos have really skyrocketed and as of August 24, 2014, the association has collected $70.2 million dollars.

Typically, the Jerry Lewis Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association raises millions of dollars, but since Jerry is not able and his co-host Ed McMahon passed away in 2009, the telethon has lost most of its appeal, and is only televised for a couple of hours instead of a couple of days.

To keep these donation numbers growing, you are being asked to contribute money to the “Rescue & Firefighter’s Campaign” when you see them along the roadsides collecting money across the country with their fireman boots.  If this is not happening on Labor Day in your area, take a little time and call-in your pledge to MDA Fighting Muscle Disease on Labor Day and let’s keep the fund growing.

Overcoming obstacles, God’s got it!

Living a Christ-centered-life does not make one exempt from trials, but knowing Jesus Christ insures that you get through any situation that may come your way.  We’ve got to remain prayerful and trust Him.

Recently, I encountered another trial on my life.  As recorded earlier, starting in 2008, there have been numerous attacks on my body and God has delivered me through all of them.  There was Skin Burning, a Broken Ankle, a Pinched nerve that required Back Surgery to relieve the pressure on the Sciatic Nerve (Laminectomy), Shingles (without pain), diagnosis of COPD & in 2011 the first experience of Diverticulosis.  If it weren’t for the promises of God, I would have ‘lost it’ a long time ago.

Diverticulosis  Try to imagine blood coming from your rectum like running water – that’s what happened the first time I had a bout with this ailment.  This time it was darker blood, yet it was blood.  I’ve had difficulties with my bowels since my youth, and have been told to increase my dietary fiber.  Now, there’s got to be a change in my eating lifestyle.
is what I experienced once again, and was hospitalized for only two days.

I praise God that I didn’t have to get a blood transfusion as I did the first time.  I also thank my God that I didn’t have to have a colonoscopy, even after drinking the prep. solution.  Did I forget to mention that in each occurrence, I was always in the F.O.G. (favor of God); private rooms, courteous staff and knowledgeable Doctors.

Sure I was a little apprehensive because my maternal Grandmother died from rectal bleeding; nonetheless, my Husband, children and a few others prayed and assured me that God is faithful even though the natural eye may see things as a little scary.  Thank You God for Your Words on healing found in the Bible.

In Jesus’ name, this apparent generational curse stops with me through God’s healing touch, because “I Got a Lot of Living to Do!” (I like “Bye, Bye Birdie” – don’t judge me).

Sometimes people need to know that they’re not the only ones going through an illness, a trial or a test.  All of us do.  Be encouraged, you too can overcome menopause, arthritis and other sicknesses.  Don’t give up on yourself.  Continue to TBR (Trust in God’s Word, Believe that what He say, He will do and Receive His healing touch in your life)

It Takes a Village – Get Involved!

"It Takes a Village to Raise a Child”; no, that phrase did not originate from a book written by Hillary Rodham Clinton, it came from an old African proverb and it’s a true statement

There was a time when teachers were the authority figure during the day while a child was in school.  Today things are different because of the integrity of some teachers & that parents believe everything that their children have to say before asking the adult what happened.  Some parents will even cuss-an-educator-out for saying something to that parent’s child.  Oh, and long time ago on the way home from school, the child might get in trouble with the neighbor up the street before having to confront their own parents.  That was an example of a real “village” which helped to raise the children in the neighborhood.

Our world is a village and crimes of injustice are children of that village.  Crimes of injustice are happening all over this world that we live in today.  As Bishop George Davis of Impact Church pointed out during a recent sermon, people should get involved and not just turn a deaf-ear when crimes of maltreatment occur.  We should take a stand to help another person who may be subject to bullying, human trafficking, or other forms of abuse.

Many times, we just don’t want to get involved.  It may be because there is a fear of retaliation, a feeling of being inadequate to make a difference, or not having the time to do anything right then and there.  Sure you don’t want to put yourself or your family in jeopardy, but there are many ways to report crimes, so you’re not placed in danger.

It’s always a good thing to check with Holy Spirit as your back-up advocate in times of confrontations.  Holy Spirit will let you know when to get involved and when to be safe and report an incident to the proper authorities.

If you don’t have a village (there may not be a mother, father, grandmother, aunts or uncles) within your family, then borrow or adopt a village.  Villages can be established through “Small Groups or Cell Groups” from church, or people you can trust like the mature woman up the street.

Always be aware of your surroundings.  Pay attention to the signs of abuse.  Get involved and be that “village” who will step up to help someone in need.

Are You Part of God’s Communication?

Have you ever thought how God uses us to help others?  God uses every Christian, who surrenders themselves to His will, the opportunity to let someone know that they are not alone.  We are on this earth to let people know of the goodness of God in spite of all the hardships that befalls the world in these last days.
God doesn’t have a telephone or a computer, but He does have some who laborer among us, who will take the time to help our neighbor if or when they may be going astray.

Are you listening to that still, small voice that some call “your conscience”?  When you are led by Holy Spirit, make sure that you “Listen and then Do”.

Speak To Me Lord

God is subtle (faint or delicate in quality) when He speaks.  We must be still sometimes to hear Him, if not, we miss His voice.  God may speak to us in an audible voice, but most of the time, He speaks in a whisper to our heart.  All we have to do is listen.
