If you missed the production of the Broadway hit show “Legally Blonde the Musical” at the Thrasher-Horne Center in
Orange Park - you really missed a treat.
It might have been inconvenient for a Tuesday night out on the town, but
the unwieldiness of the date did not affect the entertainment for that
evening. The show was fabulous! If the performance comes to a location near you, make sure
you get your tickets today.
Kudos go out to Sound Design engineer Steve Rogers, for finding and correcting
the audio mishap at the beginning of the second act. Instead of trying to troubleshoot the problem
while the audience sat in the dark, the staff tastefully made an announcement,
turned the lights up and made the corrections very quickly.
The stunning Live Music was Conducted by Andrew Smithson and Associate Director
and Keyboardist - Eddie Carney. The magnificent
sounds were enhanced also by: Reeds - Henry Hernandez, Trumpet - Melinda Ho,
Trombone - Eric Spencer, Bass - Tim O’Hara, Drums - Brad Bailey and Guitar by
Meghan Doyle. The live music gave depth
to the visuals and assistance to the magnificent vocals and dance numbers.
The Set designed, by Randel Wright, moved across the stage with the ease of so
many cast members (some of whom play multiple roles). The gorgeous Video Design of Jon Infante,
that changed continually in the background, was a real treat for the eyes and an
addendum to the storyline. If you like bling-bling
and sparkles, then you’ll appreciate the work done by Costume Designed - Derek
Lockwood. Elle Woods and her sorority
sisters really stood out in both song and dance. Bravo to the two dogs in the cast: Bruiser
and Rufus - they almost stole it.
The 2019 National Tour of Legally
Blonde is produced by Daniel Sher of Big League
Productions, Inc. The musical is
directed by Jeff Moss, with choreography by Bob Richard and it is a “must see”.

“It's clear, funny, naturalistic. It's
also opaque, terrifying, surrealistic. If that sounds contradictory, you're on to one
aspect of Shepard's winning genius; the ability to make you think you're
watching one thing while at the same time he's presenting another,” so says
the San Francisco Chronicle about “True West”, the play that’s up
next at Players by the Sea Theatre in Jacksonville Beach.
Sons of a desert-dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer have chosen
extremely different lives. Their sibling
rivalry violently erupts as they compete for the attention of a Hollywood
producer, each trying to sell him a story for a new motion picture. “True West” is unsettling and intense. This American-Classic tackles identity, family
and self-doubt.
Director Brian Niece says “The theatre
should be a safe place to do the dangerous work of facing ourselves - what's
true and what's real about ourselves - and this play, in particular, gives us
an opportunity to do that.” Niece’s
process of working with the powerhouse four-actor cast revolves around
uncovering that truth and pushing further into the words of Sam Shepard.
“With
all material, what’s most important to me is the honesty of what you’re doing.
I think as an audience member, that’s what is most important as well -- is
really believing what’s happening in front of you and the fact that it’s
happening for the first time in front of you. For me, being honest through the
choices of the character and the given circumstances of the play -- that’s
paramount to a spectacular performance, not just a mediocre one,” says Josh Andrews, playing Austin.
All four actors are making their Players by the
Sea debuts in True West! The cast is Josh Andrews, Tyler Hammond, Tyrone
Thornhill and Brooklyn Murphy. Each actor brings a diverse set of rich
theatrical and film experience to the production. True West is directed
by Brian Niece in his Players by the Sea debut, with stage management by
Kristin Livingston.
The process of bringing this story to life
further exemplifies Players by the Sea’s mission of enriching the community
through excellence in theatre. The
Jacksonville Beach community theatre hopes to create and spark discussion and
profound thought. Suzanne Hudson-Smith, Executive Director, says that “Let’s have a conversation! Though the play written in the late 1970s,
the conversation for generations has been about the mixed messages our culture
sends to men, and the way these continue to shape male identity. Sam Shepard is
a master in exposing relationships of rawness.”

The Tony nominated musical “WAITRESS”, which
opens at the Times-Union Center on March 12, 2019, has cast two young area
actresses to take on the role of “Lulu” during the Jacksonville 7 show engagement. The JAX performances will showcase 2 young
local artists.
Whitney Shillingford, 4, of Jacksonville, and Bailey Dorman, 5, of Orange Park
will alternate the role of “Lulu,” the daughter of the production’s main
character, Jenna. WAITRESS tells
the story of “Jenna,” an expert pie baker working at a local diner and stuck in
a loveless marriage. Her salvation comes
in the form of her daughter, “Lulu.”
Both girls were chosen via an audition process held at the Times-Union Center on January
31, 2019. More than 40 girls
participated in the auditions, which were presided over by members of the WAITRESS
company. The character of “Lulu” is
cast locally in each tour market and two girls are chosen to share the role. Each five-year-old girl chosen will perform in
four performances each during the engagement.
For Bailey, a student at Andromeda Preschool, this is her first audition and
acting experience. "It was fun. I liked
playing with Whitney," she said happily. “This
has been a completely new experience for our family,” remarked Chris
Dorman, Bailey’s father. “We're so excited for Bailey. She will always be able to look back on this
whole process and feel proud." While
Whitney has never acted before, she participates in a children’s drama program
called “Shining Star,” plays soccer and tennis, and takes ballet and
gymnastics. She is a student at
Southside United Methodist preschool and loves going to the park and the beach.
“Being able to audition for Lulu was such
an amazing opportunity for Whitney,” her mom Cindy told us. “We
really saw her confidence and independence shine in the process. We are so proud that she had the courage and
interest in being part of a Broadway show, and we are so honored she was
chosen! We can’t wait to see her share
the stage with such talented stars - we know this is an experience that she
will cherish forever.”
Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female creative team, WAITRESS is
an irresistible new hit featuring original music and lyrics by six-time Grammy
nominee Sara Bareilles (“Brave,” “Love
Song”), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (“I Am Sam”) and
direction by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Finding Neverland, Pippin, Hair).
Inspired by Adrienne Shelley’s beloved film, the musical tells the story of
Jenna – a waitress and expert pie maker, Jenna dreams of a way out of her small
town and loveless marriage. A baking
contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at
a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness.
But Jenna must summon the strength and
courage to rebuild her own life.
“It’s an empowering musical of the
highest order!” raves the Chicago Tribune. “WAITRESS is a little slice of heaven!” says Entertainment
Weekly and “a monumental contribution to
Broadway!” according to Marie Claire. Don’t miss this uplifting musical celebrating
friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie.

From his team members on The Voice to veteran country artists, Blake
Shelton has a history of demonstrating his support for the people in whom
he believes; when he realized that fans across the country needed to hear music
from his friends and heroes, he decided to bring them all out on the road.
“Friends & Heroes 2019” will kick off on February 14 in Oklahoma City, OK
and will span 18 dates across the country.
Very special guest Lauren Alaina
joins Shelton for the run along with special appearances by country icons the Bellamy Brothers, John Anderson and Trace
Adkins. “I’m really excited about my tour because it’s
taking where I came from and the music I listened to growing up, and actually
introducing it to a whole new audience,” Shelton said. “I feel
like a lot of people might know the Bellamy Brothers’ and John Anderson’s
music, but maybe they’re not familiar with who they are as artists. I think that this is going to be a great
opportunity for the country music fan base to be re-introduced to these guys
and, selfishly, I’m just excited to share the stage with them! It’ll be great
to have Trace back out on the road with us, and I can’t wait for one of my
newer friends and heroes, Lauren Alaina, to blow these crowds away.”
Fans can hear Shelton on country radio with his Top 15 and climbing single
“Turnin’ Me On.” The “smoldering, mid-tempo number about a seductive flame” (Rolling
Stone) follows smash hits “I Lived It” and “I’ll Name The Dogs,” the latter
of which notched him the 25th No. 1 single of his career and recently earned
its RIAA Gold certification. Shelton has
already taken the single to major television stages on Late Night with Seth
Meyers, TODAY, the 2018 CMT Awards and more. He is also back as a coach for his 15th season
on NBC’s The Voice.
About Blake Shelton: Country Music Association’s 2012 “Entertainer of
the Year,” five-time Male Vocalist of the Year winner and GRAMMY nominee Blake
Shelton continues to add to his superstar status. “Turnin’ Me On” hails from Shelton’s
chart-topping Warner Bros. / Warner Music Nashville album Texoma Shore. In the week following album launch, he became
the first artist in Country Aircheck / Mediabase history to have six songs
chart simultaneously. It became his
sixth record to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and
marked his 11th all-genre Top 10.
About Lauren Alaina: Georgia native Lauren Alaina captured America’s
hearts when she competed on Season 10 of American Idol. In 2017, Lauren
followed up her No. 1 debuting first album, Wildflower, with the release of the
critically-acclaimed Road Less Traveled.
About Bellamy Brothers: Howard and David continue to prove that the trail
they’ve ridden to fame has been as unique as their music itself—music that is
now celebrating more than 40 years of success. The road that started on the pop music charts
in the ‘70’s, took a winding turn into country music in the ‘80’s, paving the
way for duos to come, such as Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry, Big &
Rich and The Judds.
About John Anderson: His memorable hits from that musical era include: “Wild and Blue,” “I'm Just An Old Chunk Of
Coal,” “1959,” “I Just Came Home To Count The Memories,” “Black Sheep,” Swingin',”
“Straight Tequila Night,” “Money In The Bank,” “I’ve Got It Made,” “I Wish I
Could Have Been There,” “Let Go Of The Stone,” “Bend It ‘Til It Breaks,” “Mississippi
Moon” and “Somebody Slap Me.”
About Trace Adkins: Towering baritone Trace Adkins has sold more than 11

The “Experience Hendrix Tour”, the critically
acclaimed multi-artist celebration of Jimi Hendrix's musical genius, returns
the historic, nonprofit Florida Theatre.
This latest edition of the much-anticipated tour once again emphasizes
the influence Hendrix has made on a diverse group of artists. The concerts will bring together artists as
disparate as guitar wizard Joe Satriani, blues great Taj Mahal, Ernie
Isley and Dweezil Zappa. Megadeath's
Dave Mustaine will make his Experience Hendrix Tour debut while
mainstays such as Billy Cox, Jonny Lang, and Eric Johnson
will also be on board for the expedition. The Experience Hendrix Tour offers fans a rare
opportunity to see many highly regarded players performing together in a unique
setting.
15-time Grammy Award nominee Joe Satriani will make his long-awaited return
when the tour kicks off March 3 kickoff in Pompano Beach, FL. Notable for being the biggest-selling
instrumental rock guitarist of all time, Satriani came to the forefront with
the release of his 1987 solo album Surfing with the Alien. He has worked with Mick Jagger, Deep Purple,
Alice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult and the fabled Spinal Tap and is a member of
rock super group Chickenfoot. In keeping
with the spirit of the Experience Hendrix Tour, Satriani has formed an all-
star trio especially for the occasion, calling upon bassist and vocalist dUg
Pinnick from King's X, and prolific sideman Kenny Aronoff on drums to serve as
his rhythm section.
Satriani commented, "The Experience
Hendrix Tours are always so much fun. The
camaraderie between all the musicians on the show is magical. I'm so excited to play some deep Hendrix
tracks in a power trio setting with dUg Pinnick and Kenny Aronoff!!!"
Originally the lead guitarist for Metallica, Dave Mustaine next founded
Megadeth in 1983 and the group has earned a loyal, worldwide following. The Southern California native can be
considered an architect of the speed metal movement, which is one of many
branches on the family tree of heavy, guitar-based music that can be traced
back to Jimi Hendrix. With five platinum
albums and one multi-platinum album under his belt, Mustaine and his sound are
institutions in the rock world. The 2019
Experience Hendrix Tour will be his first.
Also hitting the road this time around will be Billy Cox, bassist for both Jimi
Hendrix's Band of Gypsys and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Cox has been the backbone of the tour since
its inception, providing a spiritual connection between the past and present. Two other artists who enjoyed friendships with
Hendrix will also take part. Blues
legend Taj Mahal and guitar Ernie Isley each make a welcome return to the tour,
as does the dynamic guitar and vocalist Jonny Lang, the legendary Eric Johnson,
Cesar Rosas & David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, drummer and Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame inductee Chris Layton of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble fame as
well as Calvin Cooke and Chuck Campbell, the "Sacred Steel" slide
guitar masters known as The Slide Brothers, Mato Nanji of Indigenous and Henri
Brown.
The 2019 Experience Hendrix tour dovetails with the release last November 9th
release of the Deluxe Edition box set of Electric Ladyland from
Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings in celebration of the 50th
anniversary of Hendrix's masterpiece. It
will be available as either a 3CD/1 Blu-ray set or a 6LP/1 Blu-ray set,
remastered by Bernie Grundman and including Electric Ladyland: The Early
Takes, which presents demos and studio outtakes from this period in
Hendrix's career, plus a new 5.1 surround sound mix of the entire original
album by Hendrix's original engineer Eddie Kramer. Also included is Jimi Hendrix Experience:
Live At the Hollywood Bowl 9/14/68 well as the feature length documentary At
Last? The Beginning: The Making of Electric Ladyland.
