ORCA golf bags women’s match play championship

ORCA Golf Bags Women’s Match Play Championship has just announced PXG (Parsons Xtreme Golf) – an innovative golf company dedicated to developing high-performance equipment and apparel – as presenting sponsor for its inaugural tournament. The unique, two-week tournament series for women professional players will take place at World Golf Village in October 2021. As part of its sponsorship, PXG will be featured in the official tournament logo, also being debuted.

The ORCA Golf Bags Women’s Match Play Championship presented by PXG will feature 64 women professionals pursuing their dream of playing on the LPGA Tour, battling over two weeks in two separate, but connected, tournaments. The first week will feature a 54-hole Stroke-Play tournament on the King & Bear course, which will also seed the second week’s event, a 64-woman Match-Play championship at Slammer & Squire. There will be no cut in the Stroke-Play event and all players will advance to the Match-Play tournament.

Since the company’s inception, PXG has taken a strong stance in its support of women in golf. The company lists a dozen exceptionally talented women on the LPGA Tour on its official pro roster and provides equipment to many other top-ranking female professionals.

PXG’s clubs are built to spec for each individual golfer and the company will host a live-fire fitting area for tournament players and consumers who wish to be fitted for PXG equipment. There will also be opportunities to test PXG’s extensive line of putters on the World Golf Village 18-hole putting course.

In addition to the golf competition – and of equal importance – the tournament will celebrate women’s initiatives by providing programming such as leadership forums, executive networking, and education. The programming will be developed and provided by Generation W, a national nonprofit based in Jacksonville Beach (FL) founded and run by Donna Orender, whose mission embraces the guiding tenets of education, inspiration, and connection and the power of women’s leadership.

“The Generation W programming is a critical aspect of this event,” said Erica Bennett. “There are myriad career opportunities outside the ropes for women in the golf business and in the manufacturing business, and we want to promote that aspect of our industry as well.”

Each tournament will have its own prize purse, a guarantee of $50,000 shared between the two events. The winner of the Match Play event will be The ORCA Champion, and in addition to cash prize money will also receive a $2,500 Gift Card from PXG, as well as a commemorative golf bag designed by Erica Bennett of ORCA Golf Bags. The tournament series will feature a pro-am event, junior clinics, and local community-based activities and fundraising opportunities.

The ORCA Golf Bags Women’s Match Play Championship presented by PXG represents two of the 14 official events on the Women’s All Pro Tour (WAPT) in 2021. The WAPT was established in 2019 in partnership with the LPGA’s Symetra Tour. The WAPT is the Official Qualifying Tour for the LPGA’s Symetra Tour, providing more opportunities for women to play professional golf and to advance their careers to the next level. “We are very excited to bring the WAPT to the Jacksonville area and, in particular, the World Golf Village”, says Gary DeSerrano, WAPT president. “We are certain the next stars of women’s professional golf will look forward to this new and exciting event.”

Information on elevated hospitality opportunities, Pro-Am spots, tickets, key sponsorships, and volunteering is available on the tournament website at www.TheORCAGolf.com and by calling MediaShare Consulting Group at (904) 838-4962. You may reach the office by email.

Spring ‘Drug Take-Back-Day’ 2021

Despite dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is still very necessary to properly dispose of unused medications. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at the locations and times below. The aim of the event is to encourage the public to remove any access to drugs that may potentially be abused by friends, family and others; or would be harmful to pets and children.

Some drugs, such as inhalers, damage the protective ozone layer. Flushing certain medications down the commode, raises concern about trace levels of drug residues that may be found in surface water, such as rivers and lakes, and in some community drinking water supplies. The same concern arises if we were to dispose of drugs down our kitchen, bathroom or utility sinks. It’s a fact that people excrete low levels of medication through their urine when they use the restroom, yet flushing is still no way to get rid of unwanted meds.

Preparing medications for disposal: Before throwing out a medicine container, scratch out all identifying information on the prescription label to make it unreadable. This will help protect your identity and the privacy of your personal health information.

Do not give your medicine to friends. Doctors prescribe medicines based on a person's specific symptoms and medical history. A medicine that works for you could be dangerous for someone else.

The safest way to get rid of unwanted meds is by going to a drop-off point, but, if you are really unable to go to a drop-off site, take a look at the related video above for another alternative for disposal.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
DATE: Saturday April 24, 2021
TIMES: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

LOCATIONS:  JAX Naval Base and others
If you live in Jacksonville or anywhere else in the USA, click HERE with your location and click “search again” to find a drop site near you.

Get rid of those old drugs in the medicine cabinet. Don't flush them, or give them away.

‘Deana Carter’ brings acoustic performance to JAX

Singer, songwriter and producer Deana Carter will give a live acoustic performance at Terry Theater at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, May 15.

The 90s country music artist will be featured in an intimate acoustic setting where her powerful voice and guitar are the subject of the spotlight. This will be an up-close and personal event punctuated by personal stories and anecdotes about her life and musical influences, while performing some of her biggest hits, including “Strawberry Wine,” “We Danced Anyway,” and “Did I Shave My Legs for This?”.

Her superstar success continues to be evident as the chart topper “You & Tequila,” co- written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated as CMA’s “Song of the Year”, as well as two Grammy nods, notably the coveted “Song of the Year” and also received a nomination as ACM’s “Song of the Year”.

Sparta, Ga. native Faren Rachels will be the opening support act. In November of 2017 Rachels released the self-titled EP, “Faren Rachels” & joined Luke Combs on his fall tour. During this time, Rolling Stone named her one of 2018’s new country “artists to watch”.

This will be a safe, socially distanced event with very limited capacity brought to you by Georgia-based concert promotion company Six String Southern Productions.

About Deana Carter: Drenched in sun-kissed natural beauty both inside and out, Deana Carter didn’t take a seemingly easy route to stardom, but instead chose to defy the conventional expectations of the typical Nashville artist blueprint and make her own mark. And she did, undeniably taking the industry and fans by storm with her wildly successful multi- platinum international debut “Did I Shave My Legs For This?” more than a decade ago. Anchored by the dreamy super hit “Strawberry Wine,” Carter showcased her own blend of country and retro-rock sprinkled with the folksy singer/songwriter qualities that have garnered Deana Carter well-deserved respect and wild acclaim.

Free Summer theater coming to the Florida Theatre

The Florida Theatre’s Theatreworks program has revealed the 2021 lineup for Free Summer Theatre sponsored by CITI. All four Free Summer Theatre events will take place at the Florida Theatre with show times of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Admission is free and reservations are required. Seats can be reserved now at TheatreworksJax.com.

The Florida Theatre’s Theatreworks program provides the best national and international professional touring children’s theatre to the school age children and summer campers of the First Coast region. Founded in 1979, Theatreworks was an independent organization until it merged with the Florida Theatre in 2019.

The 2021 Free Summer Theatre lineup is:
Wednesday, June 16 - Princess Thimbelina: Princess Thimbelina is Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story of a tiny fairy child looking for happiness. The 45-minute musical is vividly presented on stage with giant puppets and inflatable garden. A flower witch enchants the fairy child. A frog scares her. A big blue sparrow hawk befriends her. And a mumbling mole and spinning spider are helped by Thimbelina as she waits for Spring and a chance to bloom. Princess Thimbelina and her menagerie of giant garden animal puppets hope to meet you and share a smile!

Wednesday, July 14 - Doug Berky’s Gems: The World’s Wisdom Stories: Doug Berky believes that stories should be seen as well as heard. He uses improvisation, mime, masks, voice, and puppetry, to let the story to let express itself. The result is a visual feast filled with fanciful characters, drama, comedy, and many twists and turns. The stories are “Gems” of wisdom passed down to us from many peoples around the world. Tales include "The Lion and the Mouse," "The Crocodile and the Monkey," and "The Drip Nose Boy."

Thursday, July 15 - Doug Berky’s No Show: “No Show” is a comic tapestry woven from physical comedy, mime, music, mask theatre, clowning, improvisation, and circus arts. Doug draws from these vast traditions to delight audiences internationally and across the US. “No Show” begins with the premise that a performance has been scheduled, the stage is set with props and costumes, the audience has gathered and is seated and waiting, but the actors are a no show. What might happen when someone from the audience approaches the stage and discovers all that awaits. Masterful mayhem? Perhaps. Imagine one’s first attempt at riding a unicycle, the discovery of theatrical masks, juggling clubs, and a sousaphone. Can one really keep rhythm juggling shakers while playing classical music on harmonica? Experiencing “No Show” may just satisfy your curiosity.

Tuesday, July 20 - The Time Machine: H.G. Wells’s 1895 Science Fiction novel travels to the stage in this “steampunk” rock musical. A Victorian-era time traveler ventures far into the future encountering the ethereal Eloi and the dangerous subterranean Morlocks. He must return to his own time with a lesson in embracing diversity essential to saving the human species.

Theatreworks: Free Summer Theatre is Sponsored by CITI, Kirbo Charitable Trust and W.W. & the Eloise D. Gay Foundation.

Don’t miss ‘They/Them/Their’ (Zanele Muholi) at The Cummer Museum

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is proud to present “Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail The Dark Lioness”, an internationally touring exhibition organized by Autograph, London and curated by Renée Mussai. These magnificent self-portraits were taken throughout the US, and all over the world, as you will note next to each photograph.

The exhibit was brought to Jacksonville, FL due to a redirection caused by the COIVD pandemic. There has not been a more controversial display of blackness since the Augusta Savage showings from Oct. 12, 2018 to Sun., Apr. 7, 2019.
The Museum will be the final venue for this exhibition in the United States.

In more than 72 self-portraits and wallpapers, celebrated visual activist Zanele Muholi (South African, b. 1972) uses “their” body as a canvas to confront the deeply personal politics of race and representation in the visual archive. “Their” ongoing series Somnyama Ngonyama, which translates to ‘Hail The Dark Lioness’ from isiZulu, one of the official languages of South Africa, playfully employs the conventions of classical painting, fashion photography and the familiar tropes of ethnographic imagery to rearticulate contemporary identity politics. Each black and white self-portrait asks critical questions about social (in)justice, human rights and contested representations of the Black body.

Muholi states, “I’m reclaiming my blackness, which I feel is continuously performed by the privileged other. My reality is that I do not mimic being Black; it is my skin, and the experience of being Black is deeply entrenched in me. Just like our ancestors, we live as Black people 365 days a year, and we should speak without fear.”

Throughout the series, the dark complexion of Muholi’s skin (intensified through enhanced contrast applied in post-production) becomes the focal point of a profound, multilayered interrogation of beauty, pride, desire, self-care, well-being and the many interlinked phobias and isms navigated daily such as homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, racism and sexism, to name but a few.

“Zanele Muholi’s visually arresting self-portraits compel viewers to consider timely topics such as contrast, dignity, solidarity, difference, history and activism in meaningful ways,” said Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Ph.D., the Museum’s George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director and Chief Executive Officer. “Each one invites deep looking and, ultimately, encourages viewers to ask themselves critical questions about empathy, courage and the power of each and every voice.”

The exhibition features photographs taken between 2012 - 2019 in cities across Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. Muholi's socially-engaged, radical brand of self-portraiture transforms found objects and quotidian materials into dramatic and historically loaded props, merging the political with the personal, aesthetics with history — often commenting on specific events in South Africa’s past, as well as urgent global concerns pertinent to our present times: scouring pads and latex gloves address themes of domestic servitude while alluding to sexual politics, cultural violence and the often-suffocating prisms of gendered identities. Rubber tires, cable ties or electrical cords invoke forms of social brutality and exploitation; sheets of plastic and polythene draw attention to environmental issues and global waste, while accessories like cowrie shells and beaded fly whisks highlight Western fascinations with clichéd, exoticized representations of African cultures and people.

Gazing defiantly at the camera, Muholi challenges viewers’ perceptions while firmly asserting their cultural and sexual identity on their own terms. When you gaze upon each photo, see what is in plain sight and what might be buried in your own observations. This writer saw a surprising resemblance of Zanele Muholi to songstress Nina Simone.

About Zanele Muholi: Zanele Muholi is a visual activist and photographer based in Johannesburg. Muholi’s self- proclaimed mission is “to re-write a Black queer and trans visual history of South Africa for the world to know of our resistance and existence at the height of hate crimes in South Africa and beyond.”

They (Muholi’s preferred pronoun) co-founded the Forum for Empowerment of Women (FEW) in 2002 (www.inkanyiso.org), and in 2009 founded Inkanyiso (www.inkanyiso.org), a forum for queer and visual (activist) media. They continue to train and co-facilitate photography workshops for young women in South African townships, and engage in a variety of community supported programs.

The “Art Heist” cometh to Jacksonville, FL

If you liked the board game “Clue” or were intrigued by the movie “Knives Out”, then you will like the up-close experience of - “ART HEIST”. Can you spot a liar? Become a Detective on a Walking Hunt for a Criminal Mastermind in the All-New Interactive Show Based on the true story of America’s largest art theft! “ART HEIST”. Tickets and dates are still available for this ‘who-done- it’ interactive drama.

Put your NCIS, CSI and Law & Order skills to use and walk off the quarantine poundage to solve a ripped-from-the-walls, real-life master robbery of thirteen works of art, valued at half a billion dollars. Based on a true story of the world’s biggest art caper, “Art Heist” is a true crime walking show where socially distanced groups of 30 -35 will move through five Jacksonville walkable locations to gather clues. The amateur gumshoes interact with a wild group of wily career criminals, slimy con men, rumpled art recovery specialists, a possible inside man, a gentle psychopath, and the larger-than-life but definitely real self-proclaimed Greatest Art Thief of All Time.

The show premiered last September at the Vancouver Fringe Festival. The story is based on the biggest art heist in history and took place on March 18, 1990, when two thieves disguised as police officers entered Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in the middle of the night, telling guards they were investigating a disturbance. Valued at a half a billion dollars, 13 works of art, including paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Manet were stolen. The $500 million pieces as well as the robbers remain at large today.

Actors, through conversation, will reveal clues to the detective audience but then again, a red herring or two might present itself. Sharp sleuths will guess who the liars are and ultimately solve the enigma. No two performances will ever be the same as the actors improvise with every interaction.

"In these times, we're looking to create new opportunities, not only for audiences to enjoy theatre experiences, but also for the actors and crew members out there who have found themselves out of work. It's been a very tough time for our industry and Right Angle is reimagining and repurposing live entertainment to fit today's reality,” said Justin Sudds who along with Alison Spiriti is producing.

Art Heist was conceived as a form of theatre that can work while respecting all COVID-19 safety protocols. Produced by Right Angle Entertainment, this unique show was created by Justin Sudds and written/directed by TJ Dawe and Ming Hudson. The world premiere cast in Vancouver included: Jayson MacDonald, Sara Bynoe, Michael Unger, Arthi Chandra, Nevada Banks, Drew Carlson, Mily Mumford, Rodney Decroo and Stefano Guilanetti. Design Coordination by Erika Conway.

TJ Dawe is a writer, director and performer of new theatre. He co-created internationally The One-Man Star Wars Trilogy, One Woman Sex and the City, and PostSecret: The Show, which have toured internationally. He co-wrote the play Toothpaste and Cigars, which was adapted into the feature film What If, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan and Adam Driver. He helped Richard Dreyfuss create a multimedia career retrospective stage show titled Richard Dreyfuss: A Diminishing Resource. He teaches a course on solo performance at Langara College. You can find his monologue Medicine on YouTube. Ming Hudson is a physical theatre practitioner, freelance performer, devised theatre creator and teacher. She’s worked with a variety of theatre companies including Bard on the Beach, the Arts Club, Boca Del Lupo, Theatre Replacement, Atomic Vaudeville and The Firehall Arts Centre. She’s an instructor at the Canadian College of Performing Arts.

“COVID-19 has changed the game for everyone in the arts,” said Director TJ Dawe. “Many of the elements we took for granted are gone, or at least on hold for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, there’s nothing like a career as a freelancing artist working in new theatre to cultivate adaptability and openness to innovation. With that mentality, every project is a unique challenge already.”

Guided walking tour groups of 30 -35 will begin at various start times starting outside at the Times-Union Center. Restrooms will be available inside the Times-Union Center prior to the start of each tour. Tours are approximately 90 minutes long.

Remembering Passover today

It is Good Friday 2021, during a pandemic, and I have another chance to reminisce of the events that Jesus endured over 2000 years ago. Why was it called “Good”? I guess, to fulfill the outcome of Jesus’ suffering & dying (as prophesied in the Old Testament); but the good news is that He rose again and is alive in us today.

After spending 12 years in Catholic School, I realize that I learned of Christ then, but now, I really know Him. Rituals are also different than they were years ago. There is not as much kneeling, but one still gets their exercise from standing and sitting repeatedly.

The service at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church was an hour and twenty minutes of time well spent in worship. There was also a dramatization from actors giving an account of each station as seen from the eyes of those that might have been a witness during Christs’ time. The programs that were offered, assisted those who were following along.

There are several denominations that display the Stations of the Cross and they are: Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist and Roman Catholic. Since we are coming through COVID-19, most churches are still having everyone wear a mask & keep socially distant.

Stations of the Cross, also called Way of the Cross, is a series of 14 pictures or carvings portraying events in the Passion of Christ, from his condemnation by Pontius Pilate to his entombment.
The series of stations is as follows: (1) Jesus is condemned to death, (2) He is made to bear his cross, (3) He falls the first time, (4) He meets his mother, (5) Simon of Cyrene is made to bear the cross, (6) Veronica wipes Jesus’ face, (7) He falls the second time, (8) the women of Jerusalem weep over Jesus, (9) He falls the third time, (10) He is stripped of his garments, (11) He is nailed to the cross, (12) He dies on the cross, (13) He is taken down from the cross, and (14) He is placed in the sepulcher.
The images are usually mounted on the inside walls of a church or chapel.
