The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is proud to present “In the Garden,” on view February 2
through April 22, 2018. The exhibition features
more than 100 photographs from the George Eastman Museum collection that
explore how humans cultivate the
landscapes that surround them, and the ways in which photography has
recorded, interpreted, or staged the cultivated landscape in its many shapes
and forms. From famous locations to the simplest home vegetable garden, from
worlds imagined by artists to food production recorded by journalists, these
images broaden our understanding of how photography has been used to record
gardens.
Spanning the history of photography and photographic processes from the 19th-century
daguerreotype to inkjet prints, the exhibition looks at how photography has
been key in documenting humans’ relationship to nature. Some of the first photographs were photograms
of plant materials — direct records of the structures of botanical specimens. However, 19th-century photographers also
called upon the artistic tradition of still life paintings, capturing
compositions of floral bouquets or objects in a garden. As photography quickly became accepted as a
method for recording the world, photographs became stand-ins for landscapes
that most people could not visit — a visual access to cultures and gardens
around the world.
This exhibition is even more relevant in the context of Arthur and Ninah
Cummer and their experience of creating and utilizing their gardens and other
garden spaces in their family, social, and civic lives. In particular, Ninah’s
love for the cultivated landscape, and for outdoor spaces that promoted
gatherings, contemplation, and respite, still impacts the Jacksonville community.
It comes as no surprise
that, in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma’s fury, the Jacksonville community
longed to see the Cummer Gardens and other cultivated public spaces return to
their previous beauty and purpose. Although
In the Garden had been planned for a
while, an exhibition about the beauty of gardens and nature, seen through the
lens of a camera, could not be more relevant. “As we are still in the reconstructive phase of our historical gardens,
it is very timely that we present an exhibition about photographers who
celebrate the beauty, uniqueness, and significance of these cultivated spaces,” said Associate Curator Nelda Damiano.

Manilow hopes others will follow his philanthropic lead as he brings his
Manilow Music Project to John E. Ford PK-8 School in Jacksonville, FL. The legendary singer/songwriter plans to
donate a Yamaha keyboard to launch a local music instrument drive. Anyone who donates a new or gently used
musical instrument will receive 2 free tickets (valid for pre-selected seat
locations on a first come first serve basis) for Manilow’s February 18th
concert at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts in Jacksonville.
The Manilow Music
Project has conducted music instrument drives all over the country to
assist local schools with their music programs. “I’m thrilled to once again
bring the gift of music to these kids,” added Manilow. The Public
Can Trade a New or Gently Used Musical Instrument for Free Tickets to Manilow’s
February 18th concert in Jacksonville, FL.

As an homage to the Broadway revival production, true "cabaret"
tables will be available for audience members within the orchestra pit area
near the stage for a more immersive viewing experience. Tables seat four and include: complimentary
champagne service with a dedicated server.

Thrones: A Parody. Musical Thrones: A Parody brings
to life the characters of the Emmy-Award winning HBO series Games of Thrones.
Sing and dance along with Daenerys and
her dragons, Tyrion, Joffrey and all the jolly members of the Lannister and
Stark families in this fun musical.
January 28 - 8 p.m. — Tiffany
Haddish. Comedian Tiffany Haddish’s break-
out- performance in the hit movie Girls Trip and one of the 2018 Oscar Nominations announcers, made
her Variety Magazine's "Top 2017 Comedians to Watch." Her first one-hour comedy special, She
Ready! From The Hood to Hollywood! premiered
on Showtime in August. Later this year she will star in the upcoming TBS sitcom
The Real O.G. alongside Tracy Morgan.
January 30 - 8 p.m. — Take Me to the River. Backed by an all-star Memphis band, Take
Me To The River includes performances by the Hi-Rhythm Section (“On The
Loose,” “Save All My Love,” and “Since You’ve Been Gone”), Frayser Boy (“Gone
On That Bay,” “Big Money”) Al Kapone (“Whoop That Trick,” and “Get Crunk,
Get Buck”) and The Stax Academy Alumi Band under the musical direction of
Boo Mitchell, who is best known for his work with Al Greene, 8 Ball, John
Mayer, Rod Stewart and Lamont Dozier.

Bill Engvall is coming back to the Thrasher-Horne
Center in Orange Park with “Here’s Your
Sign.” Don’t miss the funny man as
he returns with a whole new show. Bill
Engvall: Here’s Your Sign will perform on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 8 p.m.
Those who purchased tickets for the
original show date in October will have their choice seats for the new year’s
show.
Bill Engvall is a Grammy nominated, multi-platinum selling recording artist and
one of the top comedians in the country. Most recently, Bill was a contestant on season
17 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and as a fan favorite, he made it to the
finals. Earlier this year, Bill lent his
voice to the animated comedy series Bounty Hunters, which aired on CMT.
He previously starred in, and executive produced, the TBS sitcom The Bill
Engvall Show. Bill was part of the
enormously successful Blue-Collar Comedy concert films, which sold over
nine million units and received a Grammy nomination. He also starred on the WB’s hit sketch comedy
show Blue Collar TV and in several solo specials for Comedy Central. In 2012 he reunited with Jeff Foxworthy and
Larry the Cable Guy on the Them Idiots Whirled Tour, which aired as a
special on CMT.
Bill’s first album, Here’s Your Sign, is certified platinum and held the
#1 position on the Billboard Comedy Chart for 15 straight weeks. His second
album, Dorkfish, also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Comedy Chart, as did
his subsequent comedy albums. Bill has written several books, including his
2007 autobiography Bill Engvall –Just A Guy.
A native of Galveston, Texas, Bill moved to Dallas and worked as a disc jockey
with plans of becoming a teacher. While
in a nightclub one evening, he tried his hand at stand-up comedy and found that
making people laugh was truly his forte. Soon after, he moved to Los Angeles and went
on to star in the Showtime special, A Pair of Joker’s, hosted A&E’s Evening
at the Improv and appeared on The Tonight Show and Late Show with
David Letterman. In 1992, Bill won
the American Comedy Award for “Best Male Stand-up Comedian.” He appeared in several episodes of Designing
Women and co-starred in Delta and The Jeff Foxworthy Show. Bill resides in Southern California with his
