‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ steers into the Alhambra JAX

Are you staying in town for June and July?  Well, why not make plans to get tickets for a fantastic show to celebrate 50 years with one of the world’s favorite films, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” (the musical of the same name) opens at the iconic Alhambra Theatre & Dining.  Audiences of all ages will be flying high with the show’s mixture of madness, intrigue and exuberance.  Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will take guests on a fantastic musical adventure with an out-of-this-world car that flies through the air and sails the seas.  The “Flying Car” has been created, “in-house,” and will take center stage for this show.

Filled with amazing stage spectacle and unforgettable songs, including the Academy Award-nominated title song, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.  Based on the beloved 1968 film version of Ian Fleming’s children’s book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a family-friendly blockbuster that audiences will find “Truly Scrumptious.”
This summer family show is presented by Snyder Heating and Air Conditioning.

Can the loveable but whacky inventor, Potts, along with his two children and the gorgeous Truly Scrumptious outwit the bombastic Baron Bomburst who has decreed that all children be banished from his kingdom? What happens when the children are caught and imprisoned with the other youngsters by the evil Child Catcher? Will it all end happily-ever-after?

A little about the show:
Originally billed as “the most phantasmagorical musical in the history of everything,” Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a fantastic musical adventure featuring an out-of-this world car that flies through the air and sails the seas. It tells the story of eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts who, with the help of his children, Jeremy and Jemima, and the ever-lovely Truly Scrumptious, sets about saving a former Grand Prix-winning race car from the scrap heap.

Soon they discover the car has magical properties, including the ability to float and take flight! After word gets out about its extraordinary abilities, trouble ensues when the evil Baron Bomburst decides he wants it all to himself, launching Caractacus, Jeremy, Jemima, and Truly on a series of high-flying high jinx to save the miraculous motorcar.

Originally written as a novel for young adults by famed James Bond author and creator, Ian Fleming, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was adapted by Roald Dahl into a quirky but charming script for the hit 1968 MGM motion picture. The film transformed the story into a musical by adding songs written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, composers of several Disney classics including: Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, and The Aristocats, among others.

When adapting the show for London’s West End in 2002, producers were faced with the daunting prospect of bringing the indomitable personality of Chitty to life - including seeing the car take flight and set sail - live on stage.  The Alhambra now faces similar challenges for its production.  Designed, developed and built by Alhambra Set Designer Ian Black and Technical Director, Dave Dionne, the resulting “flying car” will not disappoint (but the secrets cannot be revealed just yet).  The London production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, ran a record-setting three and one-half years and was nominated for two Olivier® awards. In 2005, the Broadway production of the show received five Tony® Award nominations, 10 Outer Critics Circle® Award nominations, and four Drama Desk nominations.  Call or stop by for your tickets today!

Cummer Museum receives $30,000 toward Garden Reconstruction

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is thrilled to announce the receipt of two significant gifts from national garden organizations, The Garden Conservancy and The Garden Club of America. These gifts, totaling $30,000, will help fund the reconstruction of the historic Cummer Gardens, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, which were severely damaged during Hurricane Irma.

The Cummer Gardens sustained extensive damage from Hurricane Irma and the subsequent unprecedented levels of storm surge flooding. The lower tier of all three formal garden spaces remained submerged for approximately 24 hours in as much as four feet of water. This resulted in the uprooting of plants, contamination of outdoor sculptures and fountains with corrosive contaminants, detached railings along the river, broken lighting, pervasive salinization of the soil, large amounts of debris, and significant impact to much of the physical infrastructure, including drainage, electric, fencing, and the well that services the landscape. The Museum has engaged
WLA Studios of Athens, Ga., as a consultant to guide the reconstruction of these garden spaces.

The Garden Conservancy, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to saving and sharing outstanding American gardens for the education and inspiration of the public, has hosted an annual Open Day in Jacksonville in partnership with the Museum for five years.  The Open Days program opens the gates to local private gardens, fueling the public’s passion for gardens and gardening through self-guided tours and special programs presented by experts in many fields.  Building on its tradition of helping significant public gardens manage natural and manmade challenges, the Garden Conservancy presented the Museum a $20,000 donation to help fund the garden reconstruction effort.

Since 1999, Late Bloomers Garden Club, a member of The Garden Club of America, has been an important partner in maintaining the Cummer Gardens through financial and volunteer support. Resolving to help ensure recovery of the historic gardens after the unprecedented flooding, the Late Bloomers club submitted a request to The Garden Club of America’s Restoration Initiative, a fund supporting member clubs directly involved in public landscape restoration and conservation projects in communities devastated by natural disaster.  The resulting $10,000 grant will fund new plants and work toward reconstruction of the Italian Garden, with the goal of honoring the historic character of the site while making improvements that will prepare it to withstand future storms.

Your continued financial support will always be appreciated and feel free to donate

‘Camp Broadway®’ 2018 is ready for your child

Do you have a child who has shown interest in the theatre, is talented in singing, acting or dance?  Then there is a place where they can go when school lets out for the summer.  No singing, dancing or acting experience necessary - just a willingness to have fun and a curiosity about what happens on stage and behind the curtain.  “Camp Broadway®”, presented by the FSCJ Artist Series, returns to Jacksonville for its 18th year from Monday, June 11 – Friday, June 15, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the FSCJ Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts on Florida State College at Jacksonville’s South Campus.

Camp Broadway® introduces young people to the world of life on-stage and behind the scenes.  Campers work with Broadway directors, choreographers, and musical directors to receive training in acting, scene study, improvisation, music theory, solo and ensemble singing, movement, and dance.  This five-day performing arts program offers each camper the opportunity to expand his or her creative talents, build self-esteem, learn the art of collaboration, and gain a fuller respect and understanding of musical theatre.

Camp Broadway® has been proclaimed the “Camp of Dreams” for starry-eyed kids who are just beginning to dream of being on Broadway.  It is a self-contained summer workshop that travels around the country bringing Broadway to kids.  The 40 hours of camp include singing, dancing and master classes for kids ages 10 to 17.

Applications are still being accepted for Camp Broadway®, and tuition is $575 per camper and includes daily lunch, snacks and two t-shirts.  Spaces are limited and Camp Broadway® fills up quickly, so register your camper today!  Visit
Camp Broadway Jax or contact Amanda Faye at (904) 357- 8934 or email for more details.

With authentic Broadway instructors teaching dance routines and musical numbers at the same break-neck speed as a real Broadway show, Camp Broadway® is a fun-filled week of activities designed to teach kids about the serious business of live theater.  One activity is our annual Salute to Singin' and Dancin' Kids™ (a special luncheon where campers meet and hear about the various theater jobs from real theater professionals).

This year, campers will perform either “Singin’ in the Rain” or “42nd Street” depending on their age group. The performance will take place on Friday, June 15, 2018 from 4-6 p.m. at the conclusion of camp.

Camp Broadway® -The National Tour is offered once a year in Jacksonville.  Founded in 1995, Camp Broadway® is Broadway's Original Summer Program for theatre-loving kids.  Since then, Camp Broadway LLC has worked at the intersection of entertainment and education to become the industry leader in theatre arts youth programming, special events and educational publishing.  The company serves the Broadway industry by being an authorized channel for families, schools and social organizations who believe in the essential value of the arts as a means of life-long learning.  Proclaimed “The Camp of Dreams” by Live Magazine, Camp Broadway has hosted nearly 20,000 children from all 50 states and dozens of countries at its annual summer programs leading with its flagship programming New York City, as well as cities such as Atlanta, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Providence, Tempe, and elsewhere in America.  Camp Broadway has also been featured regularly on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade® telecast; performed with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall; and appeared in Broadway on Broadway®, an annual free concert in Times Square.
