New staff joins ‘Players By The Sea’ team

The popular community (PBTS - Players By The Sea) theatre has hired two new valuable staff members to keep the theatre in top shape. Kanesha Frederick was named the Box Office Administrative Assistant and Alexandra Blackwell will take on the role of Marketing & Communications Manager.

Kanesha Frederick is a Jacksonville native who discovered a love for the stage at an early age.  She began singing at the age of 6 years old and her love of music and the arts blossomed.  She has been acting for 13 years and has been cast in numerous plays under the direction of some of Jacksonville’s greatest directors including Jereme Raikett with Megamind Productions, Toni Diamond-Bingham with Dynamic Duo Productions, and Cedarian Crawford with Cedarian Crawford Presents.  Kanesha is a passionate Pastry Chef and owner of Tickled Pink Sweets, a local bakery, “Tickling Your Tastebuds One Treat At A Time.”

“My love for theatre and my community are a part of what makes me who I am. I am excited to be a part of the Players By The Sea family and I can’t wait to see what life has in store for me. I am #ProudToBeAPlayer,” she says.

Alexandra Blackwell graduated from Florida State University this past May.  She has a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communication Studies and a minor in Music.  Over her college career, she gained marketing, writing, editing and reporting experience from internships with WFSU Public Media, College Magazine, WJCT Public Broadcasting and Alcom Marketing and Advertising.  Ever since the 8th grade, she’s been in love with the theatre.  Her first role was Dina in School House Rock Jr.  From there she went on to participate in theatre at Nease High School, Summer Musical Theatre Camp in St. Augustine, the Northeast Florida Conservatory and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival.

She says, “I am beyond thrilled to accept a role that combines my skills with my passion.  Players by the Sea became my happy place the second I stepped inside.  And I am honored to start creating alongside such a talented team.”

You can find both Kanesha and Alexandra at the theatre five days a week with extended hours during show runs.  They are always looking for volunteers to help them with anything from administrative work to set building.  Visit the
Players By The Sea website to learn how you can get involved.

Mamma Mia! is Abba-Solutely Fun at the Alhambra!

The third-longest running show in Broadway history comes to the Alhambra Theatre and Dining.  “Mamma Mia!” - the Alhambra's highest pre-opening show of the 2019 season; is already more than 75% sold out.  Hurry and take a look at ALL the dates for this fantastic show.

Based on the music of the supergroup, ABBA, the musical includes such hits as: "Super Trouper," "Lay All Your Love on Me," "Knowing Me, Knowing You," "Take a Chance on Me," "Voulez-Vous," "SOS" and the title track - "Dancing Queen."  Mamma Mia! has been played in more than 50 countries in all 6 continents and more than 60 million people have seen the show, which has grossed $2 billion worldwide since its 1999 debut - and now for five weeks the Jacksonville area will get its own glimpse at this global hit show.  With 75% of the Alhambra's available 10,000 seats already sold for the run of the show, Mamma Mia's popularity proves to remain high even four years after it closed on Broadway.

Mamma Mia! takes place on an exotic Greek isle where a gorgeous young woman is set to be married.  The blushing bride-to-be sets out on a search to find both her true identity and the identity of her father.  The fun gets ratcheted up when her mom finds out that she's invited three men that could potentially be her dad.  On top of the entertaining story, this lively musical will have the audience dancing in their seats with the infectious music of ABBA.

Said Alhambra Managing Partner, Craig Smith, "This show has been circled on a lot of calendars since we announced the season back in the fall of 2018.  We've only got 25% of our seats left and we don't open for two more weeks.  After the sellout of Disney's Little Mermaid just now, it seems like our market is catching on to the quality and the value of the Alhambra.  Every time we have an Abba tribute band the show sells out within days, we were confident in this pick.  It is going to be a blast here - even more than it usually is!”

You can expect nothing but the best from Executive Chef DeJuan Roy, and this show is no exception.  Chef has chosen the following culinary delights to please every pallet in the house.

First Course (Choice of One): Traditional Greek Salad with crisp romaine, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, bell peppers, black olives, feta, Greek dressing *GF*; OR Greek Chicken & Rice Soup with yogurt and lemon garnish.
Second Course (Choice of One): Roasted Leg of Lamb in natural jus, orzo primavera, roasted asparagus, tzatziki sauce *GF* without pasta; OR Moussaka (Greek Lasagna) ground beef, potatoes, eggplant, broccolini, roasted cherry tomatoes with Greek spices; OR Mediterranean Cod with shrimp, mussels in garlic tomato broth, roasted fingerling potatoes, olives and sun-dried tomatoes, asiago crostini *GF* without crostini; OR Eggplant Parmesan orzo pasta salad.

Four-time Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan will bring his “Sunset Repeat Tour” to Jacksonville, Florida for one performance only!  The launch started on May 31 in Philadelphia, PA at the BB&T Pavilion and will come to the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on August 1, 2019.  The “Sunset Repeat Tour” also includes special guests: multi-platinum singer/songwriter Cole Swindell and EMI/32 Bridge Entertainment recording artist Jon Langston. DJ Rock.

About Luke Bryan: Luke is a two-time Academy of Country Music and a two-time Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year, a five-time host of the ACM Awards, a NSAI Artist/Songwriter of the Year and was named a CMT Artist of the Year six consecutive years. Luke has more certified digital singles than any other country artist with 40 million tracks and 12 million albums with three Billion music streams. Luke has placed 21 singles at #1, 11 of which he co-wrote, and has headlined arena tours and sold-out stadiums across the U.S. and Canada. RIAA recently added to his multi-platinum success announcing new certifications for “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” 6X platinum, “Play It Again” 5X platinum, “Do I” now 3X platinum. This summer Luke opened Nashville’s only six-floor entertainment facility in the heart of Music City, LUKE’S 32 BRIDGE FOOD + DRINK. On March 3 Luke, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie will return to the judges table for the second season of ABC’s American Idol.

Cole Swindell, a Platinum-selling recording artist and 11-time No 1 singer/songwriter, released his third album, All of It, for Warner Bros. Records/Warner Music Nashville in 2018 and it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country album chart and No. 7 on the Billboard Top 200. The first single “Break Up In The End” became his 8th No. 1 career single as a solo artist. “Break Up In The End” was recently nominated for a Grammy® for Best Country Song and was named one of the best country songs of 2018 by Amazon, Spotify, Billboard, and You Tube among others. The song is included on YouTube’s Best Country Songs of 2018.

About Jon Langston: Loganville, GA native, singer-songwriter Jon Langston grew up on music like his heroes Alan Jackson and the Eagles. And once multiple concussions ended his Division I football career, he worked to develop his own style and sound while drawing from that variety of influences. In 2013 with the release of his first song, “Forever Girl,” Jon’s live shows began to grow, and he found himself opening for Chase Rice at Georgia’s Kennesaw State University.  It was his first-ever full band show, and when the crowd sang “Forever Girl” along with him, Jon knew he wanted to pursue a career in music. Since then, the now 27-year-old Music City resident has not only signed a publishing deal with Sony ATV and is managed by KP Entertainment, but has fostered his own voice in country music and landed a record deal with Universal Music Group Nashville. The Georgia native is the first artist under Luke Bryan’s new label, 32 Bridge Entertainment, and will be worked in conjunction with EMI Records Nashville. He recently released his major label debut single “When It Comes To Loving You” which landed in the Top 5 of the all-genre iTunes Chart and has accumulated over 9 million streams.

‘SHREK’ brings the swamp to PBTS

Courtesy: Maxie Lamont Coleman III
When you enter Players By the Sea (a Little Theatre that makes a BIG Impact), you’ll be transported to the magical land of Far Far Away and greeted by Kenosha who is one of the admin assistants.  The tropical, swamp-like atmosphere puts you in the mood for SHREK the musical, which you don’t want to miss.  This show is entertaining from the opening number, to Donkey’s rendition of “I’m a Believer” at the end.

There are so many talented volunteer actors in this production of SHREK, whom you might have enjoyed at other theaters around JAX, and they have a treat for you at PBTS.  The audience is composed of patrons from the mature to the very young at heart and everyone seems to be entertained thoroughly.

If you missed opening night, you missed the delectable hors d'oeuvre presented by Chef Chriss of
927Events.com; the champagne toast, and the introduction to some of the creative team members – given by production manager Jereme Raickett.

Speaking of a creative team, some people (besides Jereme) whom you might have read in a program from the Alhambra Theater & Dining would be: Director/Actor - Jason Nettle, Actors Alec Hadden, Bob Pritchard, Walter Johnson, Deena Davis; Actresses - Katie Nettle, Kalea Leverette, & Lauren Albert; and former students from: Douglas Anderson School and Ponte Vedra High School.  These people’s talents have taken them to many other venues besides the establishment mentioned above.

Accolades go out to all the characters from the swamp and the castle.  The voices are very harmonious, especially the merging voices of the 3 Fiona characters (Katie Nettle, Reese O’Brien and Claira Williams).  The tremendous voice of The Dragon is brought to you by Jazz Zamor who sings in front of the Dragon puppet (kudos to the puppeteers).  The dancing is impeccably on-time especially from the Top Hat and Tails Ensemble, and the antics of The Three Blind Mice.

If you missed opening night, there are a few more available tickets for the other performances of “SHREK”.  Don’t miss Donkey, Shrek and all the other performers on stage now!

The Cummer Gardens are flourishing once again

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is proud to announce the full reopening of its historic gardens, which sustained extensive damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017.  The $1.3 million reconstruction of the lower tier of the Museum’s historically significant English, Italian and Olmsted Gardens started in January 2019.  The project was completed in June 2019.  Historic records from the Cummer family archives, including plant logs, photographs and invoices, were incorporated into the reconstruction plans to preserve the original intent and historic character of the riverfront gardens, which were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

“The Cummer Gardens are among the most precious works of art in our permanent collection. We have been tirelessly working to restore the gardens for the community to enjoy, and welcome the community to celebrate this milestone with us all summer — especially during free access opportunities like Florida Blue Free Tuesdays, Weaver First Saturday Free for All and Summer Fridays, presented by PNC Bank,” said Adam Levine, Ph.D., the Museum’s George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director & Chief Executive Officer.

Hurricane Irma swept through Jacksonville on September 11, 2017. As a result of the storm and subsequent flooding of the St. Johns River, the lower tier of all three formal garden spaces are believed to have been submerged in as much as four feet of water for more than 24 hours.  The water uprooted plants, detached the railing along the river, contaminated the soil and damaged the physical infrastructure of the gardens, including drainage, electric, fencing and the well that services the landscape.

In January 2018, the Museum announced the selection of WLA Studio, an award-winning landscape architecture and planning firm based in Athens, Ga., to lead the garden reconstruction.  The firm’s experience in both historic landscape preservation and environmental design was critical to the Museum’s goal of preserving the atmospheric intent of the original gardens, while making necessary adjustments to reflect modern-day climate and soil conditions.  A comprehensive project team managed by Danis worked alongside WLA Studio.

Funds for the reconstruction came from grants and private donations from several benefactors, including the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA), the State of Florida, the Garden Conservancy and the Garden Club of America’s Restoration Initiative.

“We are grateful to those organizations and individuals who committed support to bringing the Cummer’s gardens back to their former glory, and ensuring this institution remains a place for art and beauty for all of Jacksonville,” said Levine.

Through the Summer Fridays Program, sponsored by PNC Bank, admission to the gardens (along with the Museum’s permanent collection) is free from 4 - 9 p.m. tonight and every Friday through September 6, rain or shine.  Tonight’s theme is “Sunshine State: Flora, Fauna, and Festivities.” Activities will include:

• Silent disco on the front lawn
• Live music by The New Moon Ramblers
• Lawn games
• Succulent workshop
• Food available for purchase from the Cummer Café and Saffron Mediterranean Kitchen Food Truck
• Beverages available for purchase at pop-up bars throughout the campus.

FSCJ Artist Series and the Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts are proud to present the 14th Annual High School Summer Musical Theatre Experience!  This program provides theatre opportunities to 7th-12th graders in the First Coast area and allows them to work hands-on with some of the highest recognized local and regional theatre professionals at the FSCJ Nathan H. New Kids On The Block will be in JAX this weekend

Back in 2018, New Kids On The Block, the multiplatinum selling pop super-group, unveiled an epic lineup for their highly anticipated 2019 tour.  NKOTB took to the Today Show plaza to reveal The MixTape Tour with very special guests Salt-N-Pepa, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson and Naughty by Nature.  The five iconic pop and hip-hop acts will hit the road together for the first time ever on a 53-city tour across North America next summer, including its stop at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on July 12, 2019.

To celebrate the event, NKOTB surprised fans by dropping an epic, throwback track, “80s Baby” featuring their new touring partners, Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty By Nature, Debbie Gibson and Tiffany.  The track takes listeners on a nostalgic yet refreshingly modern and fun ride through 80s song references and fresh verses- just a small glimpse into the party that will be The MixTape Tour.  Stream the song HERE.

With over 100 million combined records sold worldwide, NKOTB, Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty by Nature, Tiffany and Debbie Gibson will fill arenas with hit after hit when they take to the stage next summer.  Always upping the ante, NKOTB have packaged the ultimate lineup for a once in a lifetime live show experience.  The group will return to the stage after 2018’s touring hiatus to perform fan favorite number one hits like: “Hangin’ Tough,” “I’ll Be Loving You (Forever),” and “Step By Step”.  When tour mates Salt-N-Pepa, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany and Naughty by Nature hit the stage, they bring with them top chart hits and legendary catalogues to keep fans out of their seats all night.  The tour is sure to be one of the can’t miss events of the summer featuring an unforgettable night full of smashes spanning across generations.

NKOTB made the announcement on the heels of their SOLD-OUT Apollo Theater show celebrating the 30th anniversary of their hit packed, breakout album Hangin’ Tough.  The special one night only engagement sold out within minutes of onsale and saw NKOTB gracing Harlem’s famed Apollo stage for the first time since they debuted “Please Don’t Go Girl” at the Apollo’s notoriously tough amateur night.  The career defining album, Hangin’ Tough produced hits like: “Please Don’t Go Girl,” "You Got It (The Right Stuff)", “I'll Be Loving You (Forever)", and “Cover Girl.”  The crowd erupted when the band confirmed on stage that Hangin’ Tough will get a special anniversary re-issue in early 2019 with new, never been released music.

Produced by Live Nation, The MixTape Tour has embarked on its three-month journey wrapping up in Orlando on July 13th, and July 14th in Hollywood, FL.
