Storytelling: French Art from the Horvitz Collection at Cummer

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, Storytelling: French Art from the Horvitz Collection, which will be on view May 25 through July 29. This presentation combines two exhibitions from one of the world’s finest collections of French art - Imaging Text: Drawings for French Book Illustration and Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century French Paintings. The 80 works of art created between the 16th and 19th centuries, range from mythological and biblical studies to more playful imagery, and vary in style, genre, and period. Captured in crisp and swift pen strokes, finely modulated chalk, or brilliant colors, these captivating compositions were produced by some of the most prominent artists of their time, such as Charles le Brun (1619 - 1690), Charles-Nicolas Cochin, the Younger (1715 - 1790), and Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732 - 1806).

“It is a great opportunity for the Cummer Museum to present such an exceptional collection of French art. Printed illustrations played a major role in 18th-century French publishing, allowing many artists to gain entry into elite artistic, literary, and social worlds,” says Associate Curator Nelda Damiano. “In addition, the selection of paintings speaks to the rigorous tradition of the French Salon and the Academy. We are excited to share with our visitors examples of both these major trends.”

Renowned for its breadth and quality, the Horvitz collection has been the focus of many national and international exhibitions and scholarly publications, and it now contains nearly 2,000 drawings, paintings, and sculptures.  The exhibition is curated by Alvin L. Clark, Jr., Curator, The Horvitz Collection and The J.E. Horvitz Consultative Curator, Department of Drawings, Division of European and American Art, Harvard Art Museums/Fogg.  An illustrated catalogue of the drawings will be available.

Storytelling will be accompanied by a schedule of engaging programs, including a Member & Community Opening Party on Thursday, May 24 from 6 to 8 p.m.  For more information on the exhibition and related programming,

The Ritz Theatre & Museum announces new series featuring new artists

The Ritz Theatre and Museum is proud to present a new series entitled “Artists You Should Know.” This on-going series will highlight rising artists in a variety of musical genres including blues, jazz, and even country, exposing Jacksonville music lovers to artists they’ll be hearing about for years to come!  Artists You Should Know will also introduce new and diverse audiences to the LaVilla neighborhood and Ritz Theatre and Museum, who might not have yet had the opportunity to experience these downtown Jacksonville cultural gems firsthand.  Beginning May 12th, the inaugural “Artists You Should Know” series starts with its Summer Country Edition featuring four of today’s hottest newcomers:

CODY WEBB – Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 8 p.m.
Singer, songwriter, musician, and touring artist Cody Webb has played hundreds of dates across the East Coast, Midwest and beyond, earning thousands of fans with his expressive tenor and deft guitar work. Recently relocated to Nashville from his native South Carolina, he's finishing work on his debut EP and has assembled a team of top music business pros for his first push onto the national scene. Led by songs including the propulsive "More Than A Little" and plaintive "My My My Girl," Cody's new EP reveals something distinctive yet undeniably at home in today's country landscape.

SANDRA LYNN – Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 8 p.m.
A California girl with a Nashville heart, Sandra Lynn is one of country music’s sweetest rising voices. After releasing a pair of upbeat singles — “Afterparty” and “Bar Hoppin’” — in 2015, Lynn returns with the playful, flirty “Hey California,” which she co-wrote with producer Dave Brainard (Brandy Clark). “I feel like this song is such a strong identity piece for me,” she says. “It represents some of my earliest influences, like the Beach Boys and Sheryl Crow, and captures my love for country music and my roots as a California girl.”

CRAIG WAYNE BOYD – Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 8 p.m.
Craig Wayne Boyd has already drawn a large and loyal following as thousands thrilled to his victory in Season 7 of The Voice. But with release of his new album, Top Shelf, Boyd goes way beyond that platform to a place that even his fans might not have anticipated. Confident delivery, upbeat personality, deep country soul, and easy charisma - this is all still there. From the buoyant “Stuck In My Head” to the dirty sound of “We Sweat,” Boyd presents himself as an artist of complex dimension, never satisfied with repeating himself, but always true to his roots.

STEPHANIE QUAYLE – Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 8 p.m.
Stephanie Quayle offers the genre a fresh sound, relatable storylines and an invigorating presence that is unmatched in today’s music scene with her new album Love the Way You See Me featuring the current single “Selfish.” Her debut single, “Drinking with Dolly,” and follow up “Winnebago,” hit Top 50 on the Billbaord Indicator radio chart with over 1 Million strems as well. Quayle made her national debuting performing “Drinking With Dolly” on “Fox & Friends” to celebrate the video hitting #1 on the CMT Music 12-Pack Countdown.

Spring ‘Drug Take-Back Day’ 2018 is this weekend

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the locations and times below.  The aim of the event is to encourage the public to remove any access to drugs that may potentially be abused by friends, family and others; or would be harmful to pets and children.

Some drugs, such as inhalers, damage the protective ozone layer.  Flushing certain medications down the commode, raises concern about trace levels of drug residues that may be found in surface water, such as rivers and lakes, and in some community drinking water supplies.  The same concern arises if we were to dispose of drugs down our kitchen, bathroom or utility sinks.  It’s a fact that people excrete low levels of medication through their urine when they use the restroom, yet flushing is still no way to get rid of unwanted meds.

Preparing medications for disposal:
Before throwing out a medicine container, scratch out all identifying information on the prescription label to make it unreadable.  This will help protect your identity and the privacy of your personal health information.

Do not give your medicine to friends.  Doctors prescribe medicines based on a person's specific symptoms and medical history.  A medicine that works for you could be dangerous for someone else.

The safest way to get rid of unwanted meds is by going to a drop-off point, but, if you are really unable to go to a drop-off site, take a look at the related video above for another alternative for disposal.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
DATE: Saturday April 28, 2018
TIMES: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

LOCATIONS:  JAX Naval Base and others
If you live in Jacksonville or anywhere in the USA, click
(HERE) with your location and click “search again” to find a drop site near you.

Get rid of those old drugs in the medicine cabinet. Don't flush 'em or give them away.

‘Jeff Dunham’ visits JAX Veterans Memorial Arena on his tour

Record-breaking global Comedy Superstar Jeff Dunham, is bringing his cast of characters on the road, as America’s favorite ventriloquist tours North America on his 60-city Passively Aggressive tour through spring 2018.  You may remember that Jeff made a guest appearance on “America’s Got Talent” show in 2017.  He’ll be in JAX for one performance on Friday Apr. 27, 2018.

Dunham recently released his latest stand-up special, Jeff Dunham: Relative Disaster, on Netflix in September 2017. The special, filmed in Dublin Ireland, features Dunham along with his ill-behaved and slightly demented posse of characters for a gleeful skewering of family and politics. Dunham and his famous cohorts Walter, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, Bubba J, and Peanut also consider what a new member to their already dysfunctional family could mean, putting the ‘relative’ in Relative Disaster.

Dunham, a Guinness World Record holder for “Most Tickets Sold for a Stand-up Comedy Tour,” has built an entertainment empire over years of non-stop touring and innovation.  With over a million YouTube subscribers amassing over a billion views, he has carved out his own unique space in the comedy world, leading to record-breaking viewership with his comedy specials on Comedy Central and NBC. His 2015 stand-up special, Jeff Dunham: Unhinged in Hollywood, debuted on NBC Primetime and ranked as the time period’s top non-sports program on the Big 4 in every key measure.

And finally, adding to an amazing list of recent accomplishments, Dunham’s contribution to the world of show business and comedy was recognized when he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, commemorating over two decades of superstardom.  Said Dunham recently,
“When I moved to Los Angeles in 1988 with a car full of clothes and a couple of dummies, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that one day I would be tripping over my own star on the Walk of Fame.  It’s truly fantastic and a great honor; I just hope it’s not in front of an adult store.  Okay, actually, that would be hilarious.”For 2018 Passively Aggressive tour stops: Click HERE

It is ‘Beautiful – The Carole King Musical’ at the Times Union Ctr.

It’s not just the music, but how the story of Carole King unfolds that will bring understanding of some of the songs that Carole and her husband (Gerry Goffin) collaborated together, to make beautiful music and an extraordinary life.  If you’ve seen Jersey Boys or Motown the Musical, then “Beautiful—The Carole King Musical” (the early life and career of Carol Klein), is a ‘must see’ to add to your live-onstage repertoire.  You may only have heard her music, but you didn’t know her story.

There are so many familiar songs in the show, that one might think that the singers penned the music and lyrics themselves, nonetheless, it was the collaboration of Carole King/Gerry Goffin, and that of Cynthia Weil/Barry Mann.  The music is so good that you will actually be singing along with the actors on stage.  And don’t take your eyes off the actors, Little Eva (the one-time baby sitter of the King/Goffin baby girl) does a quick-change right is plain sight while singing “Locomotion”.  Yes, it happened earlier in the show too, but I don’t recall the song or the group - it was done that smoothly.

Music was contributed to groups and solo artists as: Neil Sedaka, The Drifters, Cynthia Weil, Gerry Goffin, Little Eva, The Righteous Brothers, The Chiffons, The Shirelles, Carole King and many more; and the vocals of the tribute artists is as great as the real person.

A wonderful 13-piece orchestra has added to the superb vocals of the 18 actors on stage.  The elaborate stage props move methodically in a flawless transition from one scene to another.  After a 2 1/4 hour delivery, and a fifteen-minute intermission,  you will leave wanting more.

“Beautiful - The Carole King Musical” is recommended for ages 10 years and older.  There is no foul language but there is talk about the use of drugs.  For more information and a video sneak peek, please visit www.BeautifulOnBroadway.com.  You still have time to get some choice seats to see it in JAX.
