‘The King And I’ will be in JAX all the way from Siam

Wonderful music and costumes on one stage.  NETworks Presentations LLC announces that the national tour of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s THE KING AND I, based on the 2015 Tony Award ®–winning Lincoln Center Theater Production, will come to Jacksonville at the Times-Union Center for eight performances, November 13-18, 2018 as part of the FSCJ Artist Series Broadway in Jacksonville 2018-19 Season.

One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, THE KING AND I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as: “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.”  Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.

In the words of Bartlett Sher, director of the 2015 Broadway production and the first national tour, “Great classics come back to us when we need them the most.  In order to live up to the scale of its ambition, we have to go both backward and forward in time.  It’s like having one foot in the past as deeply as we can, one foot in the present, and our eyes looking out as far ahead as we can to see how it resonates.”

Tony Award®–winning director Bartlett Sher was reunited with the award-winning creative team from the Lincoln Center Theater Productions of South Pacific and The Light in the Piazza.  The creative team for this new production includes direction by Shelly Butler, based on Bartlett Sher’s original direction, featuring sets by Michael Yeargan, costumes by Catherine Zuber (seven-time Tony Award® winner, including The King and I), lights by Donald Holder, sound by Scott Lehrer, musical supervision by Theodore Sperling and casting by Jason Styres, CSA.  Tony Award® winner Christopher Gattelli’s choreography, based on the original choreography by Jerome Robbins, will be recreated for this tour.  The production features the musical’s original 1951 orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennet with dance and incidental music arranged by Trude Rittmann.

‘Toto’ coming to JAX for 40th Anniversary Tour

“TOTO” is pleased to announce 21 new North American shows in support of their 40th Anniversary. The “40 Trips Around The Sun Tour” will come to the historic, nonprofit Florida Theatre on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 8pm.

A storm is coming to ‘Players by the Sea’ for Oct/Nov

This Halloween season will include a psychological thriller at Players by the Sea.  “Pontypool” is set to open on the Jacksonville Beach community theatre’s Studio Stage from October 26 and runs until November 3rd., for eight impactful shows.

A massive storm sends reports of people developing strange speech patterns and committing horrendous acts of violence in small-town Pontypool. Radio D.J. Grant Mazzy and the small staff at CLSY, trapped inside the radio station, desperately try to warn listeners about the virus and its unlikely mode of transmission.

Director Stephanie Natale Frus says that Pontypool “…is about the human condition — putting people in extreme circumstances and seeing how they are going to react.  I like to look at it as a snowball play — it’s the time of thing where once that actions start, it just rolls and rolls until ‘bam!’ it just stops.”  She continues to explain that Pontypool explores communication.  “The show specifically looks at communication through public broadcasting, public radio, media — which is really appropriate for our society right now.  The question is ‘why are we communicating this way so heavily?”

Pontypool looks at the psychological concept of flight vs. fright.  This play is an adaptation of Pontypool Changes Everything, a book and film by Tony Burgess.  His stage play is now being edited for this production to include local Jacksonville factors by Kelby Siddons.  The production in the Studio Theatre aims to be a truly immersive event — the production team is partnering up with folks from Sally Corporation to create an experience that draws from dark ride concepts.

‘1776’ Broadway Musical coming to the Alhambra in JAX

It's the summer of 1776, and the nation is ready to declare independence... if only our founding fathers can agree to do it!  “1776”, presented by Fleet Landing, follows John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia as they attempt to convince the members of the Second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence.

This 1776 will open at Jacksonville’s iconic Alhambra Theatre & Dining (winner of “Best Dinner Theatre” for the 5th straight year) on October 17.  “1776” puts a human face on the pages of history as the audiance sees the men behind the national icons: proud, frightened, uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty and ultimately noble figures.  These men are determined to do the right thing for a fledgling nation.

Starring in the lead as John Adams is Kevin Anderson.  Kevin has starred in over 30 film and television productions and over 30 stage productions worldwide from Steppenwolf (35-year ensemble member) to Broadway, Off-Broadway, Dublin, and London’s West End.  He has been nominated for a Tony Award, (Death of A Salesman), Outer Critics Circle Award (Come Back Little Sheba), Golden Globe, Viewers for Quality Television, TV Critics Association Awards (Nothing Sacred), and has won Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards (Death of A Salesman), and Theatre World and Jefferson Awards (Orphans).  Some of his most memorable performances include: Orphans (with Albert Finney), Sleeping with the Enemy (with Julia Roberts) Sunset Boulevard (with Patti Lupone), RFK in Hoffa (with Jack Nicholson), and Biff in Death of a Salesman.  He is perhaps best known for his performance as Father Ray in ABC’s Nothing Sacred.

‘The Simon and Garfunkel Story’ comes to JAX

Now seen by over 1/4 million people worldwide, “The Simon & Garfunkel Story” is coming to Jacksonville’s Times-Union Center on October 25, 2018 for one performance only.  Since its SELL OUT in London's West End, The Simon & Garfunkel Story is now the world's leading theatre show concerning the iconic duo.  The band made their mark on musical history, becoming countercultural icons during the social revolution of the 1960s with the surprise hit The Sound of Silence.  Further cementing their fame, their music can be heard throughout the 1967 movie The Graduate.  The duo would later be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

‘Augusta Savage Exhibit’ showing only at the Cummer Museum

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens announces its upcoming fall and spring exhibition “Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman.”  The exhibition, one of the most significant organized by the Museum in its history, will open in October for a rare double-run through April 2019. Savage is a Green Cove Springs, Florida native who became a noted Harlem Renaissance leader, educator, artist, and catalyst for change.

The exhibition assembled by the Cummer Museum from 21 national public and private lenders presents Savage’s small and medium-size sculptures in bronze and other media alongside works by artists she mentored.  Many of the works that will be on display are rarely seen publicly.  It took more than three years for guest curator and art historian, Jeffreen M. Hayes, Ph.D. to plan and assemble.  The Museum’s Savage Exhibition Planning and Community Advisory Committee includes museum trustees and notable Black leaders and artists: Carol Alexander, Dustin Harewood, Barbara Harrell, Marty Jones, Princess Simpson Rashid, James Richardson, and Adonnica Toler.

In addition to the exhibition, the Museum has created a companion catalogue that chronicles the history of this important Black artist.  Published internationally by London-based firm D Giles Limited, this hardcover book further explores Savage’s impact and legacy.  Contributors include Jeffreen M. Hayes, Ph.D., Kirsten Pai Buick, Ph.D. (University of New Mexico, Albuquerque), Bridget R. Cooks, Ph.D. (University of California, Irvine), with a foreword by Dr. Howard Dodson, Jr., Director Emeritus of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.  The book is available in October on Amazon and at the Cummer Museum Shop.

When its double-run concludes in April, “Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman” will travel nationally to the New-York Historical Society, the Palmer Museum of Art at Pennsylvania State University, and the Dixon Gallery & Gardens (Memphis).  This marks the first time a Cummer Museum-organized exhibition of this scale will travel to multiple national venues.

Savage (1892 – 1962), a female sculptor, overcame poverty, racism, and sexual discrimination to become one of this country’s most influential artists of the 20th century, playing a pivotal role in the development of some of this country’s most celebrated artists, including: William Artis, Romare Bearden, Gwendolyn Bennett, Robert Blackburn, Gwendolyn Knight, Jacob Lawrence, and Norman Lewis.

While Savage’s artistic skill was widely acclaimed nationally and internationally during her lifetime, this exhibition provides a critical examination of her artistic legacy, positioning Savage as a leading figure whose far-reaching and multifaceted approach to facilitating cultural and social change is especially relevant in terms of today’s interest in activism.

A prodigious and highly-acclaimed artist in her own right, Savage achieved excellence through talent, self-determination, and vision, ultimately creating sculptures and large-scale commissions that elevated positive images of Black culture into mainstream America.  As a leader in the Harlem Renaissance, she worked with other leaders, writers, musicians, and artists to showcase the contributions of Black culture.  She was the first Black woman to open her own gallery, challenging exclusive arts institutions to recognize the talent of Black artists.  As a community organizer and teacher, Savage’s commitment to mentorship and education became a model for other art schools run by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).  Savage is best known for “The Harp” her commissioned sculpture for the 1939 World’s Fair, and is recognized in American Black history as an educator and important community leader.

“The Cummer Museum is committed to presenting a broad calendar of temporary exhibitions with the capacity to illuminate diverse areas of art history and artistic production,” said Holly Keris, acting director of the Cummer Museum. “The Museum embraces themes and topics with strong community relevance that challenge our audience’s preconceived opinions. The Augusta Savage exhibition is a proud testament to our commitment to the community.”

The Museum seeks to connect its resources to contemporary issues, increase engagement by providing new perspectives on familiar and unfamiliar concepts, and cement the Cummer Museum as the place in Jacksonville where visitors can connect the arts to their everyday lives.

Broadway in Orange Park Florida for 2019 and more

Something Rotten! makes its Northeast Florida debut on Sunday, January 6 at 6 p.m.  Set in 1595, this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom, two brothers who are desperate to write a hit play.  When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL!

Legally Blonde – the Musical takes the stage on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. Follow the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, sexism, snobbery, and scandal in pursuit of her dreams.  Proving that you can be “legally blonde” and STILL the smartest person in the room. This contemporary, sassy musical moves at a breakneck pace driven by memorable songs and explosive dances.  Legally Blonde - The Musical warms the heart by proving that self-discovery can be way too much fun and hilarious to boot.

The hills are alive with The Sound of Music as the national tour stops at Thrasher-Horne Center on Saturday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m.  The spirited, romantic, and beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony®, Grammy® and Academy Award® winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” and the title song.

Also making its Northeast Florida debut is Finding Neverland on Tuesday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. This musical tells the incredible story behind one of the world’s most beloved characters: Peter Pan. Playwright J.M. Barrie struggles to find inspiration until he meets four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother.  Spellbound by the boys’ enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers.  With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland, where nothing is impossible and the wonder of childhood lasts forever.

Join the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, in partnership with the Jacksonville Environmental Protection Board, for the 5th annual “Envirofest” on Saturday, October 6, 2018.  This is a free family-friendly event that seeks to cultivate curiosity, respect, and understanding of the Jacksonville community’s shared natural environment, and the plant and animal wildlife in and around the city’s neighborhoods.
