U.S. Women's National Soccer Team will face Mexico in JAX

The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team will face Mexico on Thursday, April 5, at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla. (7 p.m. ET; FS1) in the first of two April friendlies between the teams.  The second-leg of the games will take place on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston (12:30 CT; FOX).  The matches will be previews of a possible meeting in CONCACAF Women's World Cup qualifying that will be held this coming fall.

Five things to know about Mexico’s team: The match will mark just the third visit to Jacksonville for the U.S. Women's National Team, which first played there when the stadium was named Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in a 2-1 loss to Norway in 1996. Most recently at EverBank Field, the WNT earned a 4-1 victory against Scotland in February of 2013. The SMG Jacksonville-managed venue is the home of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, which are owned by Shahid Khan, who also owns Fulham Football Club in London. “We’re thrilled to welcome the U.S. Women’s National Team in their return to Jacksonville,” said Jaguars President Mark Lamping.  “EverBank Field and Daily’s Place are built for world-class athletes, and the First Coast community has a strong history of embracing international soccer.  The match presents another great opportunity to welcome fans to downtown Jacksonville and continue its growth as a premier destination for live sports and entertainment.”  SMG Jacksonville’s General Manager Bill McConnell added, “SMG Jacksonville is proud to support the U.S. Women’s National Team vs. Mexico game on April 5th. It promises to be an exciting match-up between two elite teams of the highest caliber and SMG Jacksonville, on behalf of the City of Jacksonville, stands ready to ensure an outstanding experience for all who attend.”

Alhambra Theatre and Dining presents ‘5 Guys Names Moe’

It’s a little after Spring Break and time for you to enjoy some quality entertainment.  Saxophonist Louis Jordan created a new slant on jazz in the 1940’s that paved the way for rock and roll in the 1950s.  Nominated for a 1992 Best Musical Tony® Award and winner of the 1991 Laurence Oliver Award for Best Entertainment, “Five Guys Named Moe brings Jordan’s music to life through the eyes of main character Nomax, at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining.

Nomax, whose girlfriend has left him and is without money, finds “Big Moe,” “Four-Eyed Moe,” “Eat Moe,” “No Moe,” and “Little Moe” emerging from his radio to comfort him.  The result is two hours of lively, funky music that the LA Times called, “one of the more entertaining experiences available to humanity.”

About “Five Guys Named Moe”: An exuberant tribute to the music of rhythm and blues pioneer and alto saxophonist,
Louis Jordan, “Five Guys Named Moe” is an international sensation.  Initially produced in London's West End by the legendary Cameron Mackintosh, this exhilarating, all-embracing theatrical experience moved to Broadway in 1992 and was nominated for two Tony Awards.Chef

“Five Guys Named Moe” is mostly about Nomax – he's broke, his lovely Lorraine left him and he's listening to the radio at 5 o’clock in the morning.  Out of the radio, five guys named Moe appear.  Set to Jordan's iconic rhythm and blues/jazz score, the Moes encourage Nomax to turn his life around and tell Lorraine that he loves her.  The recognizable and enticing score appeals to a variety of audiences, and the uproarious audience participation will have spectators leaping out of their seats to join the celebration.  It’s not too late to get your tickets!

Tire and sign buy back continues to fight ‘BLIGHT’ in JAX

It’s time to get involved, make a little cash and clean up our neighborhoods on Saturday, March 24, 2018; at Everbank Field Lot “J”, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.; through the cities 5th. annual #FIGHTBLIGHT campaign.  Show your neighborhood and city pride by helping FIGHT BLIGHT in Jacksonville!  Duval County residents (proof of residency is required) can receive a cash REWARD for their efforts to help clean up and dispose of old tires and “snipe” signs found throughout the city.  Earn $2 per tire up to 10 tires, and 50 cents per sign up to 40 signs, with a maximum payout of $40, or $20 maximum per item.

Real Estate signs, agricultural tires (i.e. tractor tires), concrete tires and bicycle tires are NOT accepted. Commercial businesses are NOT allowed to participate in this event, and it is a violation for tire shops to hand out used tires to residents, 403.717(3)(d) F.S. Violators of this Florida statute will be reported to Florida Department of Environmental Protection authorities for investigation and/or enforcement.

Neighborhood BLIGHT refers to the deterioration and decay of neighborhoods in many cities across the country due to neglect, crime or lack of economic support.  This can also be referred to as urban decay.  As homes or properties fall further into disrepair, they can negatively affect other properties around them.  Blight conditions can lower surrounding property values, create havens for crime and illegal activity, and can threaten the public health and safety of a community.  Blight is a drag on community energy, a siphon on city vitality, and a strong deterrent to economic investment.  It can be a source of despair or cynicism for people who have witnessed the decline of a particular building or neighborhood over time.  Eliminating Jacksonville’s blight will dramatically improve the next chapter of the city’s future.

So, get together with your neighbors, family and friends as we make our city a cleaner and safer place to live.

‘Million Dollar Quartet’ comes to JAX for one evening

“Million Dollar Quartet”
is the Tony® Award-winning Broadway musical, inspired by an electrifying true story, rocks the Times-Union Center for one performance only!  Million Dollar Quartet brings that unbelievable musical moment to life with an irresistible tale of broken promises, secrets, betrayal, humor, celebration, unforgettable performances of such timeless and enduring hits as: “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “I Walk the Line,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Hound Dog,” and more.

On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought together four young musicians – Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley. Sam Phillips, the undisputed “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” who was responsible for launching the careers of each of these icons, gathered the four-legendary singer/songwriters at the Sun Records studio in Memphis for the first and only time. The result? One of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions in history.

Andy Ingalls plays Sam Philips.  The cast also features Tiffan Borelli as Dyanne, Bill Morey as Brother Jay (Jay Perkins), and Jon Rossi as Fluke.

Marvin Gaye came back to the Thrasher-Horne through Brian Owens

Some of the women in the audience may have been a little disappointed when they found out that Marvin Gaye tribute artist Brian Owens is a happily married man with six children and one on the way, nonetheless, Brian didn’t disappoint the people who came to the Thrasher-Horne Center to hear and see him in concert.

In the almost three hour show, Owens sang many songs from the Marvin Gaye repertoire, including songs that were sung with the late Tammi Terrell that were accompanied by the audience harmonizing the female parts.  The man also moves around stage like Marvin and can
play the piano like no body’s business.  His four-piece band played the best accompanying music that any enthusiast would enjoy.  It’s welcoming to hear musicians who can play in-the-pocket yet have their own individuality.

At the end of the show, Brian was summoned back to the stage by his attendees.  He then did a
tribute to the late Sam Cooke and Brian told the story of how Berry Gordy wanted Marvin to play the role of Sam Cooke in a movie, but Marvin refused because he thought the idea was morbid.  Marvin didn’t realize that he would die at the hand of his own father.

If you ever get a chance to see and hear Brian Owens in concert - take advantage of “What’s Goin On: The Marvin Gaye Experience”.
