‘Beautiful – The Carole King Musical’ in JAX for one week


Producers Paul Blake and Sony/ATV Music Publishing announce that the Tony & Grammy Award-winning Broadway hit “Beautiful—The Carole King Musical”, about the early life and career of the legendary and groundbreaking singer/songwriter, will make its Jacksonville premiere at the Times-Union Center for one week only!

Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.  Beautiful features a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, including: “I Feel The Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got A Friend” and the title song.

The Original Broadway Cast Recording of “Beautiful – The Carole King Musical” (Ghostlight Records) won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and is available on CD, digitally, and on vinyl.  Beautiful launched its first US National Tour in September 2015, and is also currently playing internationally, with productions in Japan, Australia and touring the UK.  An Award-winning production recently concluded its run in London’s West End after opening on February 25, 2015.

U.S. Women's National Soccer Team will face Mexico in JAX

The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team will face Mexico on Thursday, April 5, at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla. (7 p.m. ET; FS1) in the first of two April friendlies between the teams.  The second-leg of the games will take place on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston (12:30 CT; FOX).  The matches will be previews of a possible meeting in CONCACAF Women's World Cup qualifying that will be held this coming fall.

Five things to know about Mexico’s team: The match will mark just the third visit to Jacksonville for the U.S. Women's National Team, which first played there when the stadium was named Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in a 2-1 loss to Norway in 1996. Most recently at EverBank Field, the WNT earned a 4-1 victory against Scotland in February of 2013. Alhambra Theatre and Dining presents ‘5 Guys Names Moe’

It’s a little after Spring Break and time for you to enjoy some quality entertainment.  Saxophonist Louis Jordan created a new slant on jazz in the 1940’s that paved the way for rock and roll in the 1950s.  Nominated for a 1992 Best Musical Tony® Award and winner of the 1991 Laurence Oliver Award for Best Entertainment, “Five Guys Named Moe brings Jordan’s music to life through the eyes of main character Nomax, at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining.

Nomax, whose girlfriend has left him and is without money, finds “Big Moe,” “Four-Eyed Moe,” “Eat Moe,” “No Moe,” and “Little Moe” emerging from his radio to comfort him.  The result is two hours of lively, funky music that the LA Times called, “one of the more entertaining experiences available to humanity.”

Buddy Holly tribute will be at the Alhambra Theatre and Dining

A tribute to the singer/songwriter Buddy Holly and the Crickets will be performing for only 6 shows at the Alhambra After Dark’s Music Series and Supper Club.  Want to hear some great music like “That’ll Be The Day,” “La Bamba,” “Oh Donna” and “Chantilly Lace”?  Well, you need to make plans to attend this show and don’t delay.  These talented young men draw a nig crowd and will have you dancing in the aisles.

Made up of cast members from the national tour of the hit-musical, “Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story”, Todd Meredith & The Rave-Ons are a high energy rock and roll band originally formed to revitalize the music of Buddy Holly and the Crickets.

The Rave-Ons are led by Alhambra-favorite, Todd Meredith, who has performed in 20 separate productions of the musical as Buddy Holly and in tribute concerts for the past decade.  The Rave-Ons have played together all over the country, delighting audiences in New York City, Reno, Memphis, Nashville, Jacksonville, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, and even Buddy Holly's hometown of Lubbock, Texas.  The Rave-Ons exhibit a youthful quality reminiscent of the The Crickets and give their shows an energy and exuberance that cannot be matched.

Tire and sign buy back continues to fight ‘BLIGHT’ in JAX

It’s time to get involved, make a little cash and clean up our neighborhoods on Saturday, March 24, 2018; at Everbank Field Lot “J”, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.; through the cities 5th. annual #FIGHTBLIGHT campaign.  Show your neighborhood and city pride by helping FIGHT BLIGHT in Jacksonville!  Duval County residents (proof of residency is required) can receive a cash REWARD for their efforts to help clean up and dispose of old tires and “snipe” signs found throughout the city.  Earn $2 per tire up to 10 tires, and 50 cents per sign up to 40 signs, with a maximum payout of $40, or $20 maximum per item.

Real Estate signs, agricultural tires (i.e. tractor tires), concrete tires and bicycle tires are NOT accepted. Commercial businesses are NOT allowed to participate in this event, and it is a violation for tire shops to hand out used tires to residents, 403.717(3)(d) F.S. Violators of this Florida statute will be reported to Florida Department of Environmental Protection authorities for investigation and/or enforcement.

Neighborhood BLIGHT refers to the deterioration and decay of neighborhoods in many cities across the country due to neglect, crime or lack of economic support.  This can also be referred to as urban decay.  As homes or properties fall further into disrepair, they can negatively affect other properties around them.  Blight conditions can lower surrounding property values, create havens for crime and illegal activity, and can threaten the public health and safety of a community.  Blight is a drag on community energy, a siphon on city vitality, and a strong deterrent to economic investment.  It can be a source of despair or cynicism for people who have witnessed the decline of a particular building or neighborhood over time.  Eliminating Jacksonville’s blight will dramatically improve the next chapter of the city’s future.

‘Disney On Ice’ will be in JAX in time for Spring break

“Disney On Ice presents Reach For The Stars” featuring the cinematic sensation of ‘Disney’s Frozen’ and other timeless favorites will be here soon.  Experience adventures in new heights as Mickey, Minnie and your favorite friends from around the Disney Kingdom come together in Jacksonville for six performances at Veterans Memorial Arena.

Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy set the stage for a star-studded talent extravaganza as “Disney On Ice presents Reach For The Stars”.  Unleash the magic with royal sisters Anna and Elsa and the hilarious snowman, Olaf, as they sing captivating songs like “Let it Go” and “In Summer.”  Life is in the bubbles when Sebastian strikes up his hot crustacean band and the Daughters of Triton make a splash as they introduce Ariel in an ‘80s pop montage.  Get tangled up with a chorus of harmless hooligans when they get a visit from the spirited Rapunzel and her charming ally, Flynn Rider, on their journey to see the floating lights.  Relive a “Tale as Old as Time” when Belle opens her heart to new adventures and the Beast’s enchanted objects take center stage for a dazzling skating spectacle inviting audiences to “Be Our Guest.”.

2018 First Baptist Church Passion Play back in JAX

If you missed it last year, don’t miss this year’s presentation of the “2018 PASSION PLAY presented by First Baptist Church in downtown Jacksonville, FL.  The play features a choir, cast members, assistants, and an orchestra of numerous instruments.  The 2018 Jacksonville FBC Passion Play will encompass the Easter experience with a story of power, betrayal, redemption and HOPE.  Once again, you will have four opportunities to experience the magnificence of the prelude and Passion of Jesus Christ, the hope of glory.

Now entering its 11th year, the Jacksonville Passion Play has become an annual tradition at First Baptist Church, JAX.  The stage production features more than 400 parishioners as actors, merchants, ushers, greeters and a magnificent set designs team.  The Jacksonville Passion Play celebrates a few stories from the Bible along with some of the life, passion, death, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

The story of Jesus of Nazareth, told in the Bible, never gets old.  You may have seen this play before, but there is always something different: new costumes, stage sets, musical numbers, drama, and other surprises that are breathtaking.  As in 2017, there will be live animals and Jerusalem scenes throughout the first floor of the church.  You and you guests might desire to come a little earlier for all the festivities, and to mingle with the characters in the downstairs Jerusalem experience.

LUNCH: will be served on Saturday, March 31st. from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  ALL: $8 in advance and $10 at the door.  A limited number of tickets will be available at the door

CHILDCARE: available for Infants – 3 years during Friday and Sunday evening performances by pre-registration. NO CHILDCARE is provided for the Saturday performance.
