Receiving the most awards of all time, the 29th CMA Music award winner is now
officially on tour. Seven-time Grammy
winner and Pollstar’s three-time top female country touring artist, Carrie
Underwood, has launched a new arena tour, The Cry Pretty Tour 360. Sponsored by CALIA, the new tour will kick off
on May 1 in Greensboro, NC, and will play 55 arenas across the U.S. and Canada,
including the only Florida stop in Jacksonville on October 20, 2019. The tour is promoted by AEG Presents. Her new show will be performed in the round
featuring an all-female bill. She will
be joined on tour by special guests Maddie & Tae and Runaway June.
Tickets for the JAX concert are available at the Tom Bush Family of
Dealerships Box Office at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena and through
Ticketmaster. For more information about
a location
near you, info about the Cry Pretty album/ticket bundle, go to her official website.
Underwood released her eagerly-anticipated new album, Cry Pretty, on
September 14, 2018. Cry Pretty is
her first studio album on Capitol Records Nashville and marks the first time
she has co-produced her own album. The
lead single and title track, “Cry Pretty” debuted as the #1 song in the U.S.
all-genres. The song also topped
download charts in 38 countries around the world and amassed over 3.5 billion
social impressions across 66 countries during its week of launch in April,
which was culminated with a show-stopping performance on the “2018 ACM Awards”
telecast. Carrie co-wrote the powerful
single with Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, and Liz Rose (aka The Love Junkies)
and co-produced Cry Pretty with fellow writer/producer David Garcia.
Following her successful “The Storyteller Tour – Stories in the Round,” the new
production will feature a brand-new stage in the middle of the arena floor,
creating a unique 360-degree setting to allow fans on all sides of the arena an
intimate view of the concert. Barry
Lather (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson) is the tour’s Creative
Director, and Nick Whitehouse/Fireplay (Justin Timberlake, Beyonce) is
Production Designer.
“I love performing in the round,” says Underwood. “It’s so much fun for me and the band to
play in every direction and creates a much more intimate and immersive
experience for the audience, even in a larger arena setting. It’s been exciting to introduce audiences to Cry
Pretty and I can’t wait to bring the new album to life on this tour, along with
all of the songs we love to play live. I’m thrilled to be going out with an amazing
line-up – Maddie & Tae and Runaway June are incredible artists that are
going to bring even more electricity to our shows.”

When the Alhambra Theatre & Dining opens its
production of “Disney’s Little Mermaid,” there will be a real live “mermaid” in
the house. Grace Gibbons has been
one of the most recent actors to play as Aerial at Orlando’s Walt Disney World,
and she will be taking center stage as Aerial.
The Alhambra stage will be turned into an undersea wonderland thanks to set
designer Dave Dionne. The Alhambra has
invested in new lighting for the show, giving the room the feel of water rising
and falling to delineate between the “merworld” and the human world. “Our goal is always to provide a great
theatrical experience, and some challenge more than others. This has been a really fun set to build and
think through,” said Dionne.
Executive Chef DeJuan Roy has created a menu based on this Under The Sea theme.
First Course (choice of one): Watermelon & Tomato Salad with
arugula, feta cheese, red onion and balsamic vinaigrette (GF), or Manhattan
Clam Chowder.
Second Course (choice of one): Shrimp & Leek Gratin rice pilaf,
roasted asparagus *GF*, OR House-Made Giant Meatballs & Spaghetti served
with garlic bread, or BBQ Beef Brisket with baked beans, potato salad *GF*, or
David’s Taco Salad, a tortilla bowl filled with Spanish rice, roasted
vegetables, black beans, roasted corn, cheese, salsa & sour cream.
Third Course (choice of one): Fruit Loops™ Strawberry Cupcake with berry
compote, fresh crème, or Mango Rice Pudding.
In addition to a three-course dinner, the Alhambra also presents a Kid-friendly
Buffet consisting of: Corn Dog, Pepperoni Pizza, Tater Tots and Green Beans.
Adapted from the 1989 Disney animated film, The Little Mermaid is actually
based on the story by Hans Christian Anderson.
Set deep on the ocean floor in the merfolk kingdom, a concert in honor
of a thwarted coup d'état by Ursula is underway, being performed by the
daughters of Triton the sea king. King Triton's court composer, Sebastian the
crab, has composed a song for girls to perform ("Daughters of
Triton"). However, the youngest
daughter, Ariel, is not there for her solo, bringing the concert to a halt. Ariel has forgotten about the concert and is
swimming around the surface, admiring a new item for her collection — a fork. She reveals that she is fascinated with the
human world ("The World Above"). Together with her best friend Flounder, Ariel
visits Scuttle and his fellow seagulls to ask about the human things she's
collected, and he explains them somewhat erroneously as "Human Stuff".
It is in the human world that she meets
Prince Eric, and romance – and some mayhem – ensue.
Disney’s Little Mermaid musical was nominated for multiple awards in 2008,
including a Tony® Award for Best Original Score, Drama Desk Award for
Outstanding Actress in a Musical and a Grammy® for Best Musical Show
Album. It ran on Broadway for nearly 700
shows and 50 previews. It also ran
during numerous US tours and in 10 countries.

The
newest exhibition at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, French Moderns:
Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950, will open June 14 to Museum Members; the
exhibition will be on view to the public June 15 through September 6, 2019. The exhibition features more than 60 works of
art from the Brooklyn Museum’s renowned European collection and positions
France as the artistic center of international modernism from the mid-19th to
mid-20th centuries.
Ranging widely in scale, subject matter and style,
these paintings, drawings and sculptures were intended for public display and
private collections, and were produced by the era’s leading artists, those born
in France as well as those who studied and exhibited there, such as Paul
Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
Highlighting one of the most dynamic and engaging periods in art history, the
works in French Moderns capture the vibrancy and complexity of the Parisian art
scene from 1848 until the end of World War II. The vibrancy of this era in France attracted
artists and creators from throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the likes
of Augusta Savage — a Northeast Florida-born artist who became a leader of the
Harlem Renaissance. Her influence was
celebrated through the Cummer Museum’s recent exhibition, Augusta Savage:
Renaissance Woman, which is now on display at the New-York Historical
Society Museum & Library in New York City.
“In many ways, the modern world emerged between 1850 and 1950, and the
artwork produced during this era continues to inspire and excite today,” said
Adam Levine, the Museum’s George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director & CEO. “By providing the Northeast Florida community
with access to the Brooklyn Museum’s impressive collection of paintings and
sculptures, we hope to connect the avant-garde perspectives that inspired
Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism and Surrealism to our
visitors and Members’ lives.”
Attendees of Soirée Bohème: A French Dinner Party will enjoy a first look at
the exhibition on Thursday, June 13; a limited number of tickets are available
at cummermuseum.org. French Moderns: Monet
to Matisse, 1850–1950 will open to Members of the Museum on Friday, June
14, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The
exhibition will be on full display to the public starting Saturday, June 15.
Philanthropic support from the community is critical for the Museum to serve as
a vibrant civic resource. Membership
provides several benefits, such as early access to exhibitions like French
Moderns. For every $100 donated to the Museum as part of a membership
purchase or upgrade through September 30, the Museum will give a Museum
membership to the family of a current fourth-grade Duval County Public Schools
(DCPS) student through the Museum’s Family 2 Family Membership Match promotion.
Full details are available at cummermuseum.org/F2F.
French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950 is organized by Rich Aste,
former Curator of European Art, and Lisa Small, Curator of European Painting
and Sculpture, Brooklyn Museum.

The Cummer Museum of Art
& Gardens is excited to announce the acquisition of “Magnetic Fields,”
a new work of art by abstract artist Mildred Thompson (1936-2003), born in
Jacksonville, Florida. The acquisition
was made possible through the generous support the Rushton William Hays
Revocable Trust and the Morton R. Hirschberg Bequest.
“Magnetic Fields” (1991), part of a series by the same name, shows a rich
yellow ground with arcs and lines drawn in kinetic expression with vibrant
reds, oranges and blues in thick impasto. The upper portion of the painting shows
concentric arcs of red around an implied midpoint, with darts of blue and
orange shooting off in many directions, suggesting centripetal and centrifugal
forces. Inspired by the scientific
principles governing magnetism, “Magnetic Fields” connects the scientific with
the metaphysical. Thompson’s interests
were broad and included the study of quantum physics, cosmology, and theosophy.
The piece emanates a pulsing, frenetic
energy that is unique to her painting style, a visual language she developed to
interpret phenomena one experiences, but cannot see.
Mildred Thompson was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1936. She graduated from Howard University in 1957
with a Bachelor of Art degree. While at
Howard, she studied under James Porter, a pioneering African-American art
historian. She attended the Skowhegan
School of Painting and Sculpture in 1956, earned a Max Beckmann Scholarship to
study at the Brooklyn Museum School from 1957 to 1958, attended the Art Academy
of Hamburg from 1958 to 1961, participated in a residency at Castle
Roccassinibaldi, Italy in 1959, and in 1961 and 1962 was selected for the
prestigious MacDowell Colony residency in New Hampshire. Though the Museum of Modern Art and the
Brooklyn Museum each purchased works from Thompson in the early 1960s, she
spent the majority of the 1960s and ‘70s in Germany, in response to racial and
gender discrimination in the United States. During this time abroad, she
taught, traveled, and exhibited her art across Europe, creating a vast body of
work in printmaking, painting, and sculpture.
In the early 1970s, Thompson, influenced by the abstract paintings of the early
modernists such as Wassily Kandinsky, consciously turned away from the creation
of representational imagery to fully focus her craft on the abstract. She was
among the second generation of Abstract Expressionists, and one of the few
women of color in that group. In lieu of falling into the societal trap of
ever-changing art trends and politically-driven content, Thompson artistically
interpreted varied scientific and musical theories that are not visible to the
naked eye.

Camp Broadway®, presented by the
FSCJ Artist Series, returns to Jacksonville for its 19th year from Monday, June
10 – Friday, June 14, 2019 from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the FSCJ Nathan H. Wilson
Center for the Arts on Florida State College at Jacksonville’s South Campus. Bring
Broadway to your kids direct from New York!
Camp Broadway® introduces young people to the world of life
on-stage and behind the scenes. Campers
work with Broadway directors, choreographers, and musical directors to receive
training in acting, scene study, improvisation, music theory, solo and ensemble
singing, movement, and dance. This
five-day performing arts program offers each camper the opportunity to
expand his or her creative talents, build self-esteem, learn the art of
collaboration, and gain a fuller respect and understanding of musical theatre.
Camp Broadway® has been proclaimed the “Camp of Dreams” for starry-eyed
kids who are just beginning to dream of being on Broadway. It is a self-contained summer workshop that
travels around the country bringing Broadway to kids. The 40 hours of camp include singing, dancing
and master classes for kids ages 10 to 17. No singing, dancing or acting experience
necessary - just a willingness to have fun and a curiosity about what
happens on stage and behind the curtain.
Applications will be accepted digitally for Camp Broadway® this year,
and tuition is $575 per camper and includes daily lunch, snacks and two
t-shirts. Spaces are limited and Camp
Broadway® fills up quickly, so be sure to register your camper soon! Register HERE. Contact Amanda
Scott with any questions or for additional details at (904) 357-8934 or email.
With authentic Broadway instructors teaching dance routines and musical numbers
at the same break-neck speed as a real Broadway show, Camp Broadway® is
a fun-filled week of activities designed to teach kids about the serious
business of live theater. One activity
is our annual Salute to Singin' and Dancin' Kids™ (a special luncheon
where campers meet and hear about the various theater jobs from real theater
professionals).
About Camp Broadway®: The
National Tour is offered once a year in Jacksonville. Founded in 1995, Camp Broadway® is
